mikrotik drops connection

Sun Aug 05, 2012 3:19 pm

Hi guys , i'm having some problems with my x86 mikrotik, i don't know what is happening.

I'm using mikrotik to route my /24 class of ip's.

I'm trying to download from internet but the connection is reseted randomly by time when is reaching 10 MB / s or less (i have 100 MB bandwidth from my ISP). By "reset" i mean download goes to 0 for a few seconds then full speed again, i can't ping the router in this time but other computers in LAN yes.
Tested with multiple pc's same problem.

On mikrotik i disabled all firewall rules and queues.

I'm suspecting a hardware problem. Anyone experienced this problem ?

Hi sir
did you check ethernet port setting on both x86 and LAN switch in terms of speed and autonegotiation ? morover did you try to use as test another port on the x86 and/or switch in order to exclude that the eth port is broken?

hoping it helps you
have a nice day

Is ROS running natively on the x86 or is it running as a VM

vk7zms route is runing on x86 directly
greencomputing Router LAN interface is 1 GB /s full duplex, with auto negociation on, wich is plugged in a Switch D-Link DGS-1008D GigaExpress.

mikrotik drops connection

I have seen similar problem on routerboard product but never on x86. I have found it is often caused by a duplex setting mismatch between two devices. Try hard coding the Ethernet port to 100MFD. I have also found routerboard product to require a crossover cable in order to do correct auto negotiate with some devices (why this is so I have no idea).

Check the counters on your uplink interface for errors and also have your uplink provider do the same for your side. If it is an issue of mismatched settings, Tx/Rx and/or CRC errors will almost certainly result. While you are at it, you can compare your settings with your providers, and perhaps try something different (i.e. force nominal speed at full duplex).

The uplink is OK. The LAN interface is the problem. When the connection is reseted, I see TX & RX drops.
Should i change the NIC?

What's a on the other side of the router's LAN port - a switch? Is it managed or unmanaged? If managed, have you check the settings on that device's port that connects to the router? Have you tried going into a different port on the switch, or swapping it out?

The switch is unmanaged
Also i forced the LAN port to 100 mbps, max download speed is 2 mb /s

Forcing the router port for your lan connection probably won't work since the switch on the other side is unmanaged, so you have no way to forces similar settings on it. I'd suggest swapping out that switch and/or the cable that connects it to the router (one thing at at time) to see if that fixes it.

To make sure all is fine.

On a 386 router I would install a second network card and then test between two local routers. Another x86 router is always super. I had some ethernet card problems in the past.

Do you interconnect via fiber?
98% of our routers are 86 based.
Do you have any radio cards in this device?
If so we did find that on 8 radio cards and a fast ethernet port some packets get "lost".
It seems almost as if the irq does not get serviced in time then there is a small snowball effect for a few mS and then it clears.

We push +/- 50 M/sec on our fiber links and I can assure you we have 0 problems We have tested at 1G per second and then we do find that we get like 1G in and 800 out.

This is not a fiber problem but I would contribute it to a x86 problem.

What we do find is that the more peripherals the bigger the problem.
It is almost as if the irq get messed up and then there is a few mS of problems

We also have to reboot our x386 once a day else the radio is active but very sluggish.

But then we do push high volume data. Some of our links are running 25Mb/sec 24/7

Found the problem,

changed switch - same problem
changed media convertor - same problem

changed LAN NIC on x86 - evrika :) download going at full speed with ping <1 ms like never before

Also want to mention that the problem occurred when I upgraded to FO (same speed as cable though)

Thanks for all the suggestions

Hmm, after a few hours of testing now, the problem is still there :((

After investigating the firewall rules, i think the problem is in Firewall - > Mangle a have a few rules.

I'm using this rules to split trafic for queues (national / external)
I have from my ISP all MAN( Metropolitan area network ) IP clases.

I'm using 4 rules as bellow:

[admin@MikroTik] /ip firewall mangle> print
Flags: X - disabled, I - invalid, D - dynamic
0 ;;; Mark National
chain=prerouting action=mark-connection new-connection-mark=national_m
passthrough=yes src-address-list=MAN

1 chain=prerouting action=mark-packet new-packet-mark=national passthrou
connection-mark=national_mark

2 ;;; Mark Extern
chain=prerouting action=mark-connection new-connection-mark=extern_mar
passthrough=yes dst-address-list=!MAN

3 chain=prerouting action=mark-packet new-packet-mark=extern passthrough
connection-mark=extern_mark

Any ideas ?

Maybe is a bug in my OS version ?
