We plan to make a new Dude release at end of Q3, we plan to fix the known issues and introduce some new features. The Dude is alive.

Can anyone from MikroTik tell us if the 2Gb database limit has been corrected/fixed? I really don't want to go back to v3.6 if I don't have too...

We have some big features planned for the Dude, but like I said above, end of Q3 or later this year.

Just started using 4b3. Can you confirm that the next release will fix the problem where the maximum link speed is 4294967295 (its called snmp speed in the dialog box)?

Can we have 10 gigabith ethernet added as a default link type in the next version as well?

We have quite a few 20 Gigabit links (2*10Gb paired) that we will not be able to accurately monitor.

Regards Glen

I agree with a post in one of the other threads, if there were plans to abandon The Dude it would be awesome to have it released to open source so developers can help build on to an already amazing software.

Mikrotik, please let us know if there is ANYTHING we can do to help in the process of moving The Dude along, i know myself as well as a few others who don't even use the forum would be more than happy to help out wherever needed.

The Dude is our hobby project. It's free of charge and we can only make it when we have time from our RouterOS and RouterBOARD projects, so there are no deadlines that I can promise.

In my opinion, maybe it´s time to make poll and see if the Dude community would be willing to pay for better/faster dude development. Entire companys have their network plants based on Mikrotik Dude, so... Maybe it´s time for a "Dude Professional Version"

I would have no problem paying a reasonable price for The Dude to have its development continue and to have the problems solved.

We are willing to give you money for a working fully functional Dude. You stated your issue is that it is a hobby project. The user base is giving you a solution. Simply charge $50 for a key just like RouterOS and then fix it, please!

I am reading this and wondering if this is caused by mismanagement or simply lack of C# developers in Latvia. Maybe somebody will be read to launch a branch office outside of Latvia and hire 2 devs to get the project rolling.

Instead of keeping the project in-house, why you dont just release it as an open source project and let the development continue ?

This would be suicidal for a company with such growth potential. Providing SDK libraries for self development purposes would be more appropriate.

I hope MikroTik has considered open sourcing the Dude or making a sellable product. The Dude is great tool and works well most of the time, when there are issues -- usually we find the answers online.

It would be good to know if we should keep investing in the Dude or start working with other products.

The one thing is TheDUDE and the other thing is another thing!

You will never find a tool like TheDUDE because there is no one!
In our business we need something for a really great network and
we are using PRTG, Kentix and APC for monitoring alarming and saving
our network and servers, we get detailed reports and alarms bei Email
and SMS instantly without no problems. But PRTG unlimited sensors
is on by the cost of something around ~13.000 € and its also worth!

But it is not really reaching and matching TheDUDE with all his options!!!

As I really see it right it would be good to get a 64Bit version of TheDUDE
natively coded for Linux or exactly for CentOS, so it can profiting from
big or many CPUs and a huge amount of ram, thats it in real what I would
love to see.

So everybody is able to hug up the appliance he is needing, from an Alix APU Board,
to a Soekris net6501 over a Tyan S5533 board up to a supermicro servers, likes we
need it.

As I said in another post I think Mikrotik lost the sources and the original developer of The Dude, otherwise I can't imagine giving up on such a fantastic business opportunity. It's easy to improve The Dude and sell licenses. Literally EVERYBODY would buy license without much thinking, because everybody thinks it's the best monitoring tool (and it still has much more to offer). So, Mikrotik, you're losing MILLIONS of dollars by missing your users expectations.

The DUDE is going on to growing up will be able to be a very good helper or supporter of
the entire MikroTik product line?
good idea!
but still no answer from MikroTik..... =(

I too would appreciate a native Linux version of the Dude.

Well ... If the authors are gone... perhaps they could just opensource the code.
Amazing what might happen if that were to be done.

I am just now learning the Dude - and gotta tell you - i think it is great.
There are some things we would like it to do better - however it is a great application.

(and yes native linux would be huge)

Having been on management within an opensource project - i gotta tell you it could grow huge if it were opened up...
but time will tell...

Dear Network Engineers and The Dude users,

In my last effort to see The dude alive i´m creating a online petition in Change.org asking Mikrotik to release The Dude Source Code. I would like to ask everyone that still come to this forum and also like this awesome application to sign the petition and let´s hope that someone in mikrotik will see it...

I signed the petition. Hoping to see the Mikrotik management reading this I can suggest the alternative to releasing code, if you afraid of your Intellectual Property (the wonderful user interface framework). Resume development and make The Dude non-free, sell it let's say for $100 yearly, nobody will complain and everybody will be happy.

I did it already. I have response that something big is being worked on, but I suggested official info would be beneficial, as my post is not authoritative for many users.

Imagine a company writing "routing the world" in their logo, but saying us that their managment platform is a "hobby project" !

This is really unbelivable.

No one is asking the Dude for free. Make it licensed and paid ! Design to have yearly licenses and obligation to run on a device connected to internet so no one cracks it and use it for free.

We are ready to pay for it. Just listen to your customers and start developing it (if you havent already lost the source code or the developers behind it which I suspect that too).

Dude was never a management tool. It is a monitoring tool with a map view. Most it could do is run an external program like Winbox or do SNMP walk. It is a nice tool, but let's not overstate what it is.

Firmware upgrades are management. That's the only management type feature I can think of at the moment, but still management nonetheless. At the time, it was likely the most advanced management utility in the industry, despite missing so many "normal" management functions.

Sure. There is no real market willing to pay. Few tens of potentially paying customers are not able to cover the costs. There are other paid really management tools, but they have quite much wider possibilities. Dude is nice due to its minimalistic approach and usability. It has other advantage. Working dude is able to boost the mikrotik devices sales. Having it paid is something like paying for winbox or netinstall... Now kill me for my opinion.

Normis, it is you who **understate** usefulness of The Dude. You aren't real users of Mikrotik. You should definitely listen to those people who **REALLY BADLY** need this tool (bugfixed and updated). And they want to pay for it.

My idea is that you should organize formal meeting on the next MUM and discuss that (mostly listen!) And then implement all suggestions.

The Dude its great but i prefer mikrotik to use all their resources to maintain routeros an router-boards getting better and better every day.

For example its more important rb3011 and dualband accesspoint for wlan than Improve the dude

THe dude serves to small networks like a sharm, i have 10 instances of the dude for small clients without problem.

If your network its big, invest on PRTG or another or build a nagios box

I am very happy that years of tears everywhere around the world may end in expectations of dude coming from its grave. Hope we can see some real proof of it soon.

Nothing against what chechito wrote, I agree with him. But everything has to be done and the time is already up in all those cases!

On contrary to him I believe in new nice and big dude that will beat all other similar softwares and bring absolutely new level of administration experience to ros powered devices.

Go ahead mikrotik!

Ideally, the development of the Dude wouldn't impact the development in other areas of the company.

Speak for yourself please. A new version of the Dude means more to me (and our company) than rb3011 or dualband radios... We use their routers extensively and the Dude is a great map of our network and a central way to manage. We run it in conjunction with PRTG, which we use more for detailed stats.

Did he write what year he means? And if so, was he really sure about it? You know, there have been a case or two of MikroTik's plans being a little off in the past. ;)
I'm waiting with the celebration until the new Dude actually runs on my hardware.

+1

Prtg is a great tool but it is not usable to keep an overview of a wisp network. It can't replace the Dude.

From http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Th ... stallation
Overview
The Dude is free software, no purchase is necessary. You can download The Dude from the MikroTik web page, in the download section. When selecting the required instruction set you will see Client software of the Dude, as well as server package NPK file for The Dude server side in RouterOS.
System requirements for client
The Dude client should run on pretty much all of Windows versions starting with Windows XP. Client program does not require much resources so low spec windows computers for monitoring needs will do just fine.

The client can also be used on Linux and MacOS if using Wine or Darwine respectively.
System requirements for server package.
RouterOS:
v6.34rc13 or newer
Hardware:
MikroTik CCR series hardware
RouterOS x86 installations
RouterOS CHR environment

Note: Use of dude server package is not supported on other hardware.
From http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Th ... ude_server
New The Dude server package is only made for CCR series, x86 and CHR hosts. It wont be supported on other devices. At least for now.

It seems that Mikrotik team changed Dude monetisation strategy.

Anyone tested this Version? Any changes to 4.0beta3?

Of course I would buy another CCR just to run the dude if there is no Windows Version.

Just to clarify, don't expect much, we are basically releasing the same as we had in v4beta3, but compatible with new RouterOS and some slight changes. It will just make the base to build on, so it is only the start.

The same here. We're on v3.6 now, and if v4 is out of Beta now, I'd like to upgrade :)

Will new Dude be upgraded together with RouterOS, or it's independent package?

Will client upgrade itself automagically?

The new Dude will need to be upgraded together with RouterOS, just like other NPK packages. The client will have to match the server version, so you will have to keep your "Dude servers" at the same version, if you have several.

Migration of backup files can be done from v4beta3, not sure about v3.

Is it possible to send SMS alerts from the Dude on CCR using a USB UMTS Dongle? We do this with Dude on Windows now. We dont want to use an external SMS-Gatway as we wont get noticed if something on the path to this Gateway is down.

We will only make the server for CCR and X86 (and CHR), this will speed up development and make it easier to fix all the issues. It will also ensure there is plenty of power and space in the routers (otherwise hAP lite users would be disappointed). Windows server is no more, but you could just launch a Virtualbox installation of RouterOS CHR with the Dude server and it will be basically the same.
