Winbox Ellipsis "Connects To" Field MAC Table Empty

Sat Feb 09, 2013 11:43 pm

Using Mikro Tik Winbox Loader v2.2.18
RB450G running version 5.23

I can log in just fine using the IP address 192.168.1.1 in the "Connects To" field;
but if I click on the ellipsis, the (MAC Address, IP Address, Identity, Version, Board Name) table is blank.
Winbox Loader - no mac.png
I have tried every port - still nothing.
What am I missing?
How do I get Winbox to display that (MAC Address, IP Address, Identity, Version, Board Name) table?

As a side note, I have even tried entering each ports MAC into the "Connects To" field and I can't get in that way either.
I can only sign in if I use the IP address mentioned earlier.

two things:

1. Do you have neighbour viewer running? if yes close it and it will show

2. your antivirus/window popup blocker could be blocking the display.

I have experienced it many years ago.

Thanks for the replies.

Just for clarification, I am following these instructions here:
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Initial_M ... Connection

Those instructions suggest that it only works with ether 1 Port though I have been messing around with it and I am having limited, and very INCONSISTENT, success.

The MOST important thing seems to be that I MUST have the "Connect To" Field completely clear, shut down winbox and then restart it . . . only THEN I MIGHT be able to pick up the MAC.
Winbox Loader - finds eth1.png
When I add the password I get "Could Not Connect to (port 20561) - timed out!" messages.
Winbox Loader - timed out.png
Again, it is VERY inconsistent. The next time I try I can't get anything to appear. I have tried rebooting the router, disabling/re-eabling the NIC, I HAVE tried different ports (again with limited success - it picks up the MAC of THAT port and the Gateway 192.168.1.1 set for Ether port 1).

My reason for wanting to get this to work is that (as I understand it) if I lock myself out (like I have done once already setting up a hotspot) I should be able to log back in by using the MAC address. Is that not right?

I'll look into the neighbor viewer running, etc, but would that be it if I am getting the MAC appearing now every once in a while?
I will look to see what's up with that and report back. Thanks for the help.

I apologize for bumping this, but does anyone have any clue as to why this is 'timing out'?

You have some program in your PC interfering with Winbox, can you try from another device? Is the RouterOS install working OK? Maybe there is some problem with RouterOS.

Disable antivirus and firewall, try another Windows PC, try to reinstall RouterOS with netinstall.

Thanks for the reply normis. It is very much appreciated.

I multi boot my machine, and I have a perfectly clean version of Windows 7 with no other programs on it.
I too thought that this might be the issue as the fellow who helped set it up the router to begin with never seemed to have an issue connecting.
(he is not readily available)
So I tried this.
I have even disabled the windows firewall on the machine that is completely clean, and I am having the exact same problems connecting so I can't figure out what it could be on the computers side.

The windbox I downloaded from the v5.23 install itself; I have tried older versions of winbox; and I have downloaded it directly from the site. All have different hashes, and they all do the same thing.

As far as I can tell the RouterOS install is working fine - the settings that I put in all seem to work as expected - even when I do something wrong and lock myself out

I just want to be sure I am able to get back in in case I REALLY do something dumb - which is likely - as I am trying to learn what all the GUI settings are and the manual is not all that clear.

At the moment I don't have a serial connector so reinstalling via netinstall is not an option.

I can drop the "routeros-mipsbe-5.23.npk" package back into the "Files" - would that not be the same as 'reinstalling' the os?

Lastly I am showing a BIOS firmware of 2.27 and it says that there is a firmware upgrade to 3.02 (See this thread: http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=69781 that I have started regarding the BIOS upgrading for an image of that). I don't really think that's the issue though as I said the first fellow that helped with the set up never seemed to have an issue. I am a little leery of clicking on "Upgrade" just in case something goes wrong there - can it? Again, I just want to make sure I can get back in if I need to.

Any other comments / ideas?

Thanks again for the help

Can you try with another computer or laptop with example xp?
Hear you the beeps if routerboard startup?

Yes it is the current driver - I am usually pretty anal about that.
It is a Jmicron PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and I have re-downloaded the latest driver from here:
ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/Ethernet/Windows/

I don't have an XP machine readily available, but I could create a Virtual Box machine and try that, but I think that that may cause more problems as it would have to flow through the HOST which is Win7 based anyway. I will try a PHYSICALLY different machine shortly.

All firewalls have been turned completely off.

I get a single 'Beep" about 5 seconds after powering up, and about 45 seconds later I get the double 'beep' when it has fully booted.

Sorry plisken,

The questions I have are beginning to get mixed up across posts
I just answered your post here (where you are also commenting):
http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php ... 87#p355487

For ease of reference I have reposted the comment here:
Ok, I think that we may be getting somewhere!

I multi boot my machine and I have a perfectly clean installation of Win7 Pro on one of the partitions.
When I thought that there was a possible conflict, I booted into THAT machine and tried to connect and had the same issues.

It was suggested that I try a different computer . . . THAT works perfectly, everytime, absolutely no issues.
It was a Realtek NIC.

So I thought that maybe there is a conflict between the JMicron NIC that I have, Winbox, and the RB450G
I have 3 of these machines (NP-8150 computers) so I tired it on another machine - same OS, Same configuration (firewall anti virus etc) and it connected perfectly every single time! Exactly as I'd expect it to. Winbox found the MAC immediately, I clicked on it and instantly I was in.

So it is not a JMicron NIC problem.

What setting on THIS NP-8150 machine could possibly causing the time outs - especially if I have the Firewall turned right OFF and the Antivirus turned right off as well (by the way the other machines are running the same AV and Firewall)?

Any ideas?

Thanks so much for the help!
Clearly it is some Windows7 setting that is the issue now, and not anything to do with firewalls or AV or Drivers.
Comments/suggestions?

Ok, because this thing is bugging the heck out of me, I grabbed a spare Hard Drive and did a quick "Fresh" windows install.

I threw on the same AV and Firewall and Winbox logs in perfectly - just as you'd expect it too. :?

So it is clearly it is a software conflict but I haven't the foggiest idea what it is.
I am posting this in case it helps someone else.

If anyone else has any ideas let me know.

Re: Winbox Ellipsis "Connects To" Field MAC Table Empty

Hi all guys.

I have the following problem with Winbox discovery of devices.

I have a network behind a RB751U-2HnD router/firewall and there are several other mikrotik devices on this network. When I click the [...] button on Winbox, all internal devices appear but they appear with the Public IP address that the RB751 router has assigned to do the masquerading. So, I can't access or know the actual internal IP that each device has configured.

Have anybody faced this issue?? If anybody knows how to fix it, I would appreciate your help.

Thanks all and kind regards.

Rafael.
