Connecting iPhone to mikrotik vpn error!

Tue Feb 19, 2013 2:32 pm

Hi I have problem by connecting iPhone to mikrotik vpn.
First of all I don't know that my vpn is l2tp or pptp.
I connect windows with no problem but I don't no which options to use for iPhone.
Second with l2tp vpn in iPhone it asks for a secret. What is secret?

Look to "interfaces" for to know what kind of vpn u use
Question 2
This is the password that you have configured in the routerboard by l2tp

OK thanks but I didn't understand some parts would you please explain more for me: What do you mean by password entered on vpn configuration?
Do you mean the password of user that will asked by iPhone earlier with username? I think that is separate.
I myself didn't configured the vpn so how can I get the LT2P secret by mikrotik control panel?
And why doesn't windows ask for it?
Thanks in advance

Mikrotik setup for IPhone needs L2TP with IPsec
I was able to get my Iphone 4 working with L2TP and IPsec after alot of research and work

Under Iphone VPN settings you have the choice of L2TP PPTP or IPsec

IPSec is for CISCO
PPTP as of 2012 is not desirable anymore as a comapny that i cannot remember brags that it can crack it in 4 hours no problem. Use L2TP on your Mikortik with IPSec

If you need help with setup post a reply and I will posdt in how I got it working from my BLOG or look for Greg Sowells website and look under his Mikrotik VPN blog he has a video on how to set it up

Sorry I am not at my station
Google Greg sowell consulting and in his mikrotik video training he shows how to setup l2tp with IPSec
To get it to work with iPhones make sure the IPSec proposal I believe has AES 256 as well as 3des
Will post my blog if you still need it

Thank you all. Sorry for delay. I hadn't access to the router but tomorrow I probably get access to it. Since the vpn is NOT configured by me I am a little confused with types but please tell me more steps.
After I check the interface please tell me what should I do, because I have chance tomorrow. What to do if the vpn on the interfaces is l2tp or PPTP?
Thanks in advance

Please tell me what exactly at this point what you are trying to do or at what point you are stuck
Example
It looks like you have PPTP server allready up and running
If so are you trying to access from the WAN . Internet side?

If so you need a firewall rule to let you connect to your mikroptik PPTP Server from the internet and you need to take your phone off wireless and turn on your phones internet access with your provider and test access from there.

Re: Connecting iPhone to mikrotik vpn error!

My problem is exactly the thing described below:
We have two routers and using mikrotik, we have no internet access when connecting wireless network but we use vpn to access the internet. I myself didn't configure the VPN but I send an image of interfaces.
This VPN completely works with windows and it doesn't it is PPTP or L2TP or anything else just username and password.
But now we have many troubles with connecting to internet using iPhone because it asks us a lot of questions such as PPTP or L2TP and secrets, proxy and others and we need an step by step help to configure iPhone (or making changes in our mikrotik OS) to access the internet.
When we configure iPhone like below it says error connecting to server, contact administrator.
VPN>
PPTP
entered username and password and PPTP server
RSA SecureID "WHAT IS IT?"
Proxy and others "don't know"
How can I solve that error?

Sorry I have not been much help.

Please go to www.nasa-security.net and go to my mikrotik categories. In there look for L2TP Mikrotik setup post.

If after reading that you can't get it to work then I will not be able to help you further. Use my post as a guide for your setup. Everyone's situation is different and you may have to be creative and fill in the gaps of your setup.

Google search is your best friend :D

Re: Connecting iPhone to mikrotik vpn error!

Tue Apr 09, 2013 11:50 am

I have gone through the post for IPSEC/L2TP "Connecting iPhone to Mikrotik"
I have an issue where I cannot connect from the Internet to my RB493G.
If I change the "In interface" to be the Lan where my wifi is connected then I can connect.
To make it clear. I have a lan interface on Mikrotik where the ip is 192.168.12.254 and I have a wifi connected to it.
If I select the WIFI and configure my iphone VPN to connect to 192.168.12.254 all works fine.
When I change the "In interface" to my wan ISP then I set my iphone to connect to my wan ip it does not. I can see on IPSEC the remote peer (which is my iphone ISP IP) and the Wan IP.

My Mikrotik is connected to an ADSL with fixed public IP, forwarded ports: (500,4500,1701 and 1723)
All ports are open (500,4500,1701 UDP) and 1723 TCP.
I can connect with PPTP to my router using the Iphone 3G.

I also connected my Iphone to the segment between my ADSL and my Mikrotik (Using my wifi) the l2tp/ipsec worked fine .
Contacted my GSM operator who confirmed that they have no restrictions on the protocols used on their 3G.

The GSM operator provides private IP. So my Iphone uses natted IP. as well as my Mikrotik that accepts ports forwarded to it from my ADSL.
Could the problem be on my ADSL side ? what ports do I need to further enable in irder to make this works?

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me.
Regards
Tedd

Please specify if you are able to establish a VPN using a WIFI instead of a 3G connection.
Please note that there are many 3G operators having VPN denial, call your operator to check if VPN is allowed.

Once you send me further info I will try and help you with the settings.
in the meantime please insure that port 1723 (TCP) accepts connections (this is for PPTP)
