Bricked a 250GS and a 260GS

Wed Feb 27, 2013 1:29 pm

Hello,
Have noticed the other day that there was anew software version (1.7) for the SWOS and decided to upgrade one of my production switches.
Bad ideea.
The switch was configured as independent vlans on ports 2-5, trunked to port 1.
I have noticed the VLANS tab was changed layout wise, and in the new layout the values were either missing or all messed up.
After changing them to something that seemed right to me, rebooted the switch and that was it. Management interface is gone. Switch is now basically a dumb switch.
Tried resetting with front switch , top pcb reset pads, bottom reset pads, nothing. Dead.
Since this was out of warranty, I have ordered a 260GS to replace it.
260 came with 1.7, and i did not reload a backup config on it. Instead did all settings from scratch. Did not reboot it until all settings in each tab were entered and applied.
Rebooted aaaand it's gone.
Now i got two bricks.
Did anyone really bothered to test the 1.7 release thoroughly ??

Anyone else had this issues ? I can't be the only one that has bricked two switches like this...

Just to clarify a few more things:
1. Both switches behave like dumb switches now (the configuration was for vlans etc), so it looks like the swos does not start and leaves the atheros switch in its default state...dumb.
2. I have saved a config from the 260GS before entering the ACL rules (also a bug, if i enter a few acl rules i cannot save a backup anymore - but i remember someone here saying it was already on the bug list). So if someone for support wants to give it a shot..i could attach it here
3. TFTP mechanism does NOT work, and as such i cannot downgrade my 250gs to 1.6. Nor can I the 260 but i don't know if i could downgrade it, 1.6 does not support sfp, might brick the 260gs too.

Please attach the backup here, I will check it.

Do not install SwOS v1.6 on RB260GS, it will brick RB260GS - TFTP reinstallation will be required.
RB260GS has separate firmware from RB250GS and it is supported starting from SwOS v1.7.

It's not like it's not bricked, but yeah i thought so too.
See attached. I can also give you access to another 250GS v1.6 login to see what the config was in the 250GS that died. Let me know.

I cannot access the switch with your backup.
Perhaps access to RB250GS could be more helpful, please write to support@mikrotik.com and open a ticket about this problem.

I'm assuming hard reseetting the 260 is similar to 250 ? There is no power led or act led though so how do we do this exactly ??

Reset procedure is the same for both RB250GS and RB260GS. Press reset ("RES") button before applying power to the switch and hold it until LED ("ACT") starts blinking.

Hmm on this 260GS power led and act do not turn on at all. The only lights that turn on are link lights .

Hi,

in my feature sumary/bugs thread (http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php ... 46#p358156) , becs has answered, that with most acls you can brick your RB2*0GS, there will be a SwOS 1.8 shortly.
I think, you should RMA it, or ask through the support email, if there is another possibility.

Thanks Ronny, I've already contacted support for a RMA. We'll see how it goes.
