Access DSL Modem From Within The LAN

Wed May 10, 2006 10:49 pm

|---| DSL Modem 192.168.1.1
|
|
|---| Mikrotik 66.92.239.4 / 10.12.5.1
|
|
|
|---| My PC 10.12.5.99

My DSL modem has an internal IP of 192.168.1.1 but the DSL modem is in bridge mode, so you cannot hit it from outside.

Then I have my Mikrotik box that has an external IP of 66.92.239.4 and an internal IP address of 10.12.5.1.

Then my PC has an internal IP of 10.12.5.99.

My question is this, can I access my DSL modem's LAN IP from my workstation through the Mikrotik, or do I have to always put my laptop on the switch with the DSL modem and then set my internal IP in the same class as the modem to access it?

You should be able to.

If you add an 192.168.1.*** address to the same interface, as the 66.92.239.4. Then try it.

I haven’t tried it but it should work in theory

Make sure the gateway of the sdsl modem is you 192.168.1.*** ip that you set.

Just to let you know, I have DSL from verizon, I have my DSL MODEM is a westtell 6100, I have it set to give my router in this case my Mikrotik WAN card a DHCP address but its also set to bridge mode, but i didnt notice that when i looked at the DNS info it was handing out for the MIKROTIK in the DHCP info it was an address of 192.168.1.1,, So i tried that ip in my browser and it works, i am able to log into the DSL modem even though its in Bridge mode, I didnt add any other IP ranges to the WAN interface just left it alone with only my public and it worked, so u may want to try that? Also I was getting made that they were change my IP address so often so i set it static in the MT and i have been up for a month with out any problems and can still access the DSL modem. I hope that this helps

Ok here is what I had to do:

Add IP 192.168.1.2/24 to the PUBLIC interface
Network of 192.168.1.2
Broadcast of 192.168.1.255

The above added the route automatically, however my DSL modem does not have a Default Gateway entry in it so when I ping the DSL modem after adding the above the packets reach the modem but don't know where to go from there because the packets have a return destination of 10.12.5.0/24.

So I needed to add a NAT rule that would make my packets appear from the 192.168.1.0/24 network.

I added a srcnat in the firewall with a source address of 10.12.5.0/24 and a destination address of 192.168.1.0/24 and then I did a srcnat to 192.168.1.2 which is the IP on the PUBLIC interface.

Now everything works great.
