Wireless p2p link low throughput

Wed May 22, 2013 8:42 am

I've been using mikrotik routers for a couple years now.. love them

recently though i've been looking for a higher performance alternative (than ubiquiti) for 5ghz p2p links, and i've heard some peoples tales of great performance with mikrotik radios.

SO, i bought a pair of SXT 5HPnD units, set up a short link (under half a mile) with them, and i could only get about 50mbps TCP throughput (signal at -50, SNR 67db) i tried a couple channels, with similar results.

my best results were with 40mhz channel, NV2 mode.

is there another piece of hardware (of combination of hardware) that would be a better choice, or are there some settings i'm missing?
i googled a bit but didn't find much info except that NV2 was the best for throughput at the cost of increased latency.

any help is appreciated. thanks

IF you did the TCP bandwidth test with the INTERNAL program, then yes, you are OK and don't worry. :)
In real, is not the bandwidth you see.
To see the real TCP bandwidth out of it, you have to test it with EXTERNAL testers.
For example:
Computer A (as tester) => SXT 5HPnD ~~~~air~~~~ SXT 5HPnD => Computer B (as tester)
Only this way you will see the real bandwidth out of it, because if you use the internal bandwidth tester for TCP, the SXT 5HPnD's CPU unit goes high at 100% load and it just can't produce more bandwidth.

Take a look on that post, here is described our link in MIMO 2x2 for over than 300Mbps using our PTFE dual polarity antennas http://www.wireless-instruments.com/en/ ... -20hv.html -> http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=72505. The distance seems to be quite comparable with yours.

Thanks guys that's just the info i was looking for.
next i'll try something like you linked me to there (wish i had seen that before!)
looks very interesting.

upon closer looking today, i noticed my link speeds are 150/135mbps. which would indicate i only have one chain in operation.. woops!

as for the speed testing, tried using the internal speed test which got about 30-40mbps throughput TCP (97 udp)
i also tested using (heaven forbid) speedtest.net, which got between 50 and 60 megs most of the time (one unit was on a tower with 400meg fiber)
"speedtest.net" at the tower yields about 150mbps.. which is about the same as i get at a datacenter and i think the limitation of my old laptop.

If you use the radio to radio...
Tcp was limited by it's CPU...
