Case: 500-2000 wireless clients within 50x70 meters

Tue Oct 15, 2013 7:48 pm

Cheers!

So, I'd like someone with a great deal of experience with high capacity wireless networks to answer me this.

My case is:

* Venue size is between 15x30 meters up to 50x70 meters. Indoors.

* I can mount stuff in the roof whereever at whatever height

* I have between 500-2000 clients (depending on the event).. 99% cellphones - android/iphone

* ALL clients access a webpage at the same time. The webpage is very small, so it's not bandwidth intensive, but it still generates lots of packets back and fourth. Today I had 400 clients, and it generated around 5-6mbit when the webpage was accessed.

* I have a single access point (with 8 radios, not mikrotik) that does the job somehow today, but I'd like to switch to mikrotik for various reasons.

My question:
- How would you solve this?

I'd like something that distributes all clients over different frequencies. It's not a crisis if 10% of the users cant access the network in case of heavy interference or something, the crisis appears when it doesnt work for anyone ;-) But, I'd ofcourse love if everything worked at all times.

Unfortunately; Mikrotiks 802.11x wireless performance is very lacking. I would not use Mikrotik for this task.

I've been doing this kind of setups with various brands of equipment and mikrotik is no worse than any other brand. This kind of situation is almost impossible to work with, agregated noise for all of the equipment, not to mention all the bugs in various android/ios devices and other china made phones/tablets will make it very hard to get stable network performance or high throughput. It is a case of trial and error, configuration adjustments and different access point placement and antenna configuration.

Each to their own :) In my experience Mikrotik's 802.11 implementation is poor relative to others; not to mention tricky to get right. Don't get me wrong; we have 2000 + Mikrotik Wireless devices in our network and love them to bits; but there are definitely (in my opinion) some things that Mikrotik are great at, and some things they seriously lack at. Straight 802.11 is one of them.

I've got several MT units out there doing straight 802.11 without issue.

Nothing with this type of client density though. This will be problematic for a multitude of reasons. Proper QoS is a must, and still might be futile. A handful of clients that don't have rts/cts enabled would be problematic to put it mildly.

We recently did wireless installation for conference (around 500 users). We used TP-Link WDR-3600 with OpenWRT. I did great, worked without any problems, stable and very fast. WDR-3600 is pretty cheap and with dual band wireless.
