PPTP VPN problem with Windows 8/8.1

Mon Feb 03, 2014 10:14 pm

Hi, I am having a problem setting up a PPTP VPN connection. I was able to successfully configure and establish a PPTP tunnel between a Windows 7 and a RB2011UiAS, as well as a Mac, but when I try to connect from a Windows 8 or 8.1 client, I get an error code 720 at the window box.

I was able to get the log from RB box:
20:01:34 pptp,ppp,info,account testuser logged in, 172.16.10.171
20:01:34 pptp,ppp,info <pptp-testuser>: authenticated
20:01:34 pptp,ppp,info <pptp-testuser>: terminating...
20:01:34 pptp,ppp,info,account testuser logged out, 0 0 20 0 2
20:01:34 pptp,ppp,info <pptp-testuser>: disconnected
Any ideas of how to solve this problem. I realize this may solely be on the Windows implementation, but I just wanted to see if somebody was able to get this going, such that could give me a pointer on fixing the problem. Thank you very much for any help!!!!

Hello

Did you configure your VPN like this:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 13767.aspx

If yes, on "connection properties tab" try to adjust Options and Security. Aparently it seems to be a W8 configuration issue. For me I did it ,and it worked fine.

Thanks ColonelSteveAustin for your suggestion. As I imagined it ended up being Windows 8.1 getting complete misconfigured by Microsoft after I upgraded from Windows 8.

Just as a reference for anybody else that has this problem, the WAN Miniport PPTP was the culprit. I had to reinstall it and reset the TCP/IP stack on Windows. I followed this guide http://oyam.ca/blog/2011/11/windows-miniports.html. It took a little bit of tinkering, as they were hidden, and I could not uninstall them the way that was mentioned on that guide, I had to go into the registry editor and manually erase them, then I installed them again, and then I followed the guide completely, and now it works.

If anybody has any similar issues send me a PM and I will do my best to help out.
