Two networks same gateway

Mon Apr 14, 2014 10:29 am

Hi there,

I new to all this and I hope to find some good help :D

I'm trying to build a network to a little family farm I have a RB951G-2HnD and a D-Link access point and a 1Mb bandwidth (its the best we can get away from town) and I'm thinking about:

Having 2 separate wireless networks (one for our family and the other for visitors);

My family will connect to the wireless network from the RB - done;

My visitors will connect to the access point (different SSID and will be connected to ether2 on the RB) and I'm thinking about creating a separate network for them but we have to share the common gateway.
Thinking also to load balance so that my family never stays without Internet.

I'm absolutely sure I can accomplish this but I don't know how to do it

Is it acceptable if both WiFi networks will divide one channel or it is necessary to use different channels? In the first case you do not need an additional AP, but total bandwith will be lower.

thanks for your responses, Ill take a look at it and give a feedback.

Thanks again for the responses.

The reason why I have the extra access point is because it is going to be outside the main building and the signal from the RB doesn't get outside very well. So I'll have to have a wire to "pull" the network from the RB to the AP on the outside

Ok.

Check that your AP supports the Multi-SSID mode. Create VLAN on the local interface of RB. Configure VLAN as a guest network, and the main local interface - as a network for a family.

Configure Multi-SSID on AP.

You'll get two WiFi nets on one channel.

Don't forget to make the rule to block access from a guest network to a family network and to a router.
