Backup troubles

Fri May 02, 2014 3:08 pm

I have MT 951G-2HnD at home. Very small network, a few network devices, a few firewall rules. Today I changed an internet provider. So I made a few changes in my configuration. My previous backups has about 245KB, after a couple of restarts (incl. factory configuration) backup has 1.3MB!!!.
After some resets and restarts, now my backup has 81KB only and ending with this message:
echo: backup, critical error creating backup file: could not read all configuration
 files
I am not sure what is going on. I have 0.2 % of bad blocks, could it be the reason why I am unable to make a backup ?
Another toubles I realized during a restore. I reset my router to factory settings, login and load a previously correct backup. But not all configuration were restored (users, NTP, ...), so tried it again but some other things were missing. So I tried to restore again again again with different version of backup files until I am happy with config. But now I am unable to make a backup.

I had the same problem with a routerboard creating a backup file and the output was the same. Later i restored the backup and the rb was unreacheable. Only netinstal help me.

I suggest reinstall routerOS with netinstall for a clean installation.

And then can I try to restore one of my backups ? I am a little bit lazy to configure all my settings again :( I suppose that the biggest one will not be ok, the same IMHO the smallest one, but I have a few properly created backups, what do You think ?

Use export command to save config script to file, netinstall and upload the script back and run.

It's weird, but when I restore MT using reset button, then I can make a backup. But load of scripts not works for me :(
After successfuly reset MT and successfuly create of backups, I load my previously correct backups and make some changes by hand.
In every important step I tried to make a backup, but at the end I finish with the same backup error.
Next weird things is when I disable wifi interface, router has disappear and could not be reached.
Is netinstall OK with void of warranty ? Can I do it without null modem cable and other HW stuff ?

Forget backup, use export. Netinstall works fine via utp cable. If you do not have v. 6.12 actually, install it first by putting the files into winbox and restart. Then remove the config. Could help a bit. If not, netinstall is the only option.

And no impact on warranty as it is normal operation suggested by manufacturer in case of such errors.

Small % of nand errors are also seen by mikrotik to be normal and without impact on functionality as router do not use sectors marked as bad.

Diky Jardo za rychlou reakci :)

I have MT 951G-2HnD and there is no v6.12. In system -> routerboard - I can see Current FW 3.10 and Upgrade FW 3.08 ??? But in the quick set when I press check for upgrade I can see 5.26, which I have now and its the last FW. I tried to make a script export, which was OK, but when I tried to load that export after reset configuration, I have some weird error (the name already exist or something like that, I am not sure).
Now the router working, but I cannot disable wifi and maybe more stuff.

Seems you have ROS 5.x. if so, download the 6.12 packages from web and put them by drag-and-drop into winbox. You cannot automatically upgrade major version by update function. Then check fw upgrade again. In case you would like more detailed help in czech language, leave here your email.

Thanks,

so I decide to use netinstall, I suppose I can load the last v6.12 directly with it. Can I load my script backup after that ? Or do I have to setup everything from the beginning, because I made a script export within v5.16 ?

Update: I have 3 the same MT, two of them are production and one of them is backup. I made a script export backup on both of them and then I tried to import on the thirth, but no success. All test were done with v5.26. All my unsuccessfull restores endings like with this message:
Script file loaded successfullyfailure: already have device with such name
Then I tried to remove some lines from rsc file (because of duplicate MAC etc etc), then script loads successfuly, but only wifi config is OK, the rest configuration is default. I don't get it.

yes to all questions. Could happen that you may copy-paste script by its parts step by step into the terminal. This I did once when full script did not want to run. Do not forget to remove config before.

From 5.16 use export compact instead full export. It is easier to check and contains only changes, not default settings.

Ok, after netinstall my troubles with system backup are gone. I played with export and import commands whole day and I am little bit confused. I'll create a new topic for that.
I can confirm backup command working now.
