I like the Mikrotik products and I continue to install and support many in the field but I would like to experiment with an x86 based router. I don't need any wireless support.

For instance, is there an ATOM based board from a popular manafacturer that would do the job?

Any suggestions or links to tutorials would be appreciated.

Not sure what you mean by "USB based," but there are several ATOM systems that would work. Some have dual ethernet ports, some will require adding an interface card.

You may also want to take a look at the APU or ALIX boards from PC Engines.

For lower power applications, you probably want to avoid x86 based processors and stick with MIPS.

Thanks for the info. By USB I was meaning that a USB memory stick would be the main disk.

May be hard pressed to find one with two Ethernet ports but the rest is doable. Konrton have three ATOM or AMD based.

Why do you need x86.
There are various Routerboard devices with multiple interfaces and usb support.

I don't have to use x86 but I thought it might be a good way to go and when I look at some of the suggested solutions I do see that the SBC units are quite expensive relative to the Routerboard prices.

I'm using this, not for ROS, but as an inline IPS/Firewall. You just need to buy RAM, and either use a 2.5 inch HDD or SSD or you can run off USB (I have a 30GB SSD in mine with 8GB DDR3 RAM). Nearly silent, even under load. The CPU fan is the only moving part if you use SSD or other flash-based storage.

Pretty slick and good price. Dual LAN and 12 volt supply.

The APU or ALIX boards are very solid. Although better to be run using some kind of LINUX.

I wonder if the Dual Broadcom 57788 in the OEM PRODUCTION box from Newegg would co-operate with RouterOS?

As for the ALIX boards, I like the idea of no fan and thus NO MOVING PARTS.

Put an SSD and 2GB of ddr3 1066 memory in it and loaded ROS 6.15 onto it.

The HDMI port seems to be the default video port and the services start and I get a MikroTik login but my usb keyboards don't seem to want to work.

Is it possible that ROS under x86 does not support USB keyboards?
