Simple WDS question

Tue Jul 25, 2006 10:38 pm

When I want to extend my network using wds such as with the wireless roaming i'm looking at the examples on the mikrotik site. The show as a "package" a unit that has a grid antani and an omni with an rb112 and two radio cards.

So do you set both cards to wds with the same ssid on them? and bridge the two cards or something?

The reason I'm asking is that I have a tower on the mountain and I need to basily shoot over a smaller hill and cover the back side of that hill that isn't visiable form the tower. So this omni on one radio and a direcontal on the other and both cards set to wds and same ssid's as the tower that it's recieving form?

An additional question is, do all of the clients have to be wds capiable?

You would bridge the 2 cards, and they could have the same ssid, but only if you use static wds as if one is in station mode and the other in ap-bridge mode, they would associate to each other. You could use acess lists and stp to get around the loop, but a more "sane" solution would be to use static wds or use different ssids. If they are both access points, then again static wds or different ssids would keep the stations from getting confused.
An additional question is, do all of the clients have to be wds capiable?
Clients as in the end user CPE or clients as in the other end of the link? You'll need wds for CPE clients if you want to use them as tranparent bridges. Standard laptop clients associating to an AP using wds don't matter - they will still work.

Ok let me detail this out in simple terms and see if what I say is correct.

The 802.11B signal lets say has an ssid of "test1234" and wds has to be turned on and this unit has a routable ip address assigned to this signal.

On the far end I have another rb532 and I place two radios in it, set both ssid as "test1234" turn wds on both radious, setup both cards in a bridge.
The reciving unit is set for "station wds" and the retransmiting unit is set for "wdsslave"

Is this correct setup?
