Ethernet ports & 802.11a+b reach

Mon Oct 25, 2004 3:24 pm

Hi all... Just a few newbie questions please:

1. Why are there 2 x Ethernet ports on the RB230?
2. If you use an 802.11 a+b 100mW wireless card with the 5GHz parabolic antenna, can the signal reach a distance of 3km without a booster? And how can you calculate the speed you get after 3km?

Any input is well appreciated...

Sorry, forgot to mention that the antenna is 30dBi.

1. some people use routers with 26 ethernet ports. makes you wonder, not? a router with only one ethernet port could only be used for wireless. a router with more ethernet ports can be used for different things. for example to connect two networks.

2. we have seen distances of 60km without any boosters.

The speed can not be calculated directly. It is affected by band, signal strength, interference and hardware specs. You can calculate only signal strength, however nobody guarantees that you will get same actual results.
