Hi, I'm not a network expert and I apologise in advance for this...

I'm running a very small setup at home. I have an iMac, Mikrotik Router (951G-2HnD) Webfig v5.26, apple TV2 and an iPhone or 2 on the wireless.

The main problem is that my performance on the wireless is exceptionally bad. All devices are in the same room, pretty much line of sight and no further than 5m away from the router.
I can't play music on homesharing withouth it buffering every few seconds.
The apple TV struggles to play SD video files...

I've been trying to figure out what I can do to optimise the settings on the router but it's flipping complex and I have no clue

Oh yes and the second problem is that I can't update my software on the Webfig. I keep getting "Error: File not found" when I click "check for update"...

Does the SD video work OK on a computer? What's the speed of your internet line? What are your wireless settings?
Also, you can only auto-upgrade the router if the system version is the same. e.g. You are using RoS version 5.26 which is the latest version in RoS 5, so no upgrades can be found. I suggest you to login to router via winbox and drag and drop RoS 6.19 to your router and restart it. Be sure to use mipsbe version for this.

Also, please tell us what wireless standard do you have configured? If you have e.g. 802.11b standard you will get very low transfer speeds. You need to setup 802.11n.

I was able to fix the "Error: File not found" issue by manually updating the OS myself.

You can do this by downloading the latest package:
http://download2.mikrotik.com/routeros/ ... e-6.24.zip

Then dumping the uncompressed files into your file structure (i.e. using the upload button in the files section). Once this is done, reboot (do not pull the plug) and you should be updated.

Please note that samba sharing can cause 100% cpu usage. Mikrotik is not designed to work as nas. Its router,, don't forget.

I just went through a similar issue myself, so I'll share what I learned and maybe it'll help you out. I have an apple Ecosystem for the most part aside from having roku players instead of the apple TV. My Mac mini serves up hd files via a plex server but my roku was having to buffer all the time, even my MacBook air was having to buffer which let me know it was my network, not the roku being underpowered. Long story short, if you are running any kind of server make sure it's connected via lan. If you had gigabit wifi and all devices were compatible, you might could pull it off, however the apple products don't even connect at the full 300mbps to the mikrotik due to a limitation in place by apple, not mikrotik. So the best you'll see is 144mbps on the 2.4ghz band.....not sure if that's true on 5ghz. Anyhow, if that's what you have going, right out of the gate that handicaps you. I ran Ethernet to my mini and all my problems subsided, that freed up enough bandwidth for me to be able to wirelessly stream multiple hd streams at once now.

Yes, Apple devices are limited to 144Mbit (that is "air rate", actual speed is around half of this) for 2GHz and have no limit for 5GHz
