I am considering buying your router. I had read http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Wi ... n_I_use.3F ... Is this still true for this newer router or is the documentation there older? Namely, are TX powers really not reduced adaptively when the level is unnecessary? Using this router would I be using full TX power all the time regardless?

no, when device is not transmitting, it is not transmitting
the power is also directly linked to link quality, this is why you see different power for different data rate (see tx power table):

It is clearly written that you can use whatever power settings you want. On the other hand you should fulfil your local regulations so you will not set the maximal values anyway.

Interesting! I've not seen that kind of detailed information from, say, TP-Link and its ilk, so I didn't know what to make of them.

If I am understanding correctly... If I set the router to only output 500 mW (27 dBm), does that mean it would always get 54 Mbps on 802.11g if it is in range at all (since it would only go to slower speeds if it needed more transmit power to reach)? And 802.11n at 300 Mbps is transmitting at around 300 mW power (25 dBm)? If I told the router to reduce the power level, then, it really only affects slow speeds. Is that correct?

Depends on what you set. The tx power has not such direct link to speed. You can use even much lower tx power and reach much higher speeds if the connection quality is good. You have to laborate a bit in each case in your real environment because the link quality is very influenced by external conditions.
