Preformance at 2.4GHz and 5GHz

Hi

This is my first post about MT

I want to change my ISP. New ISP can give me connection to internet over 10Mbps.

Today i need 10Mbps, but i can't use wires, laser or fiberchannel.
So i must use radio link.
I heard some about MT, so i tried this.

Could single 802.11g (Atheros 5212) in bridge mode with Andrew Mag Grid 24dBi , on distance 5km sould be enough?
I need stable 10-15Mbps full-duplex with low latency and no packet drops.

I have a 5Km 802.11g link using 2 x Mikrotik Routerboard 230 with atheros cm7 minipci, with 2 x Hyperlink 24Dbi Grid Antenna's and am getting an effective throughput of about 23Mbps. Provided you have no obstacles in the way and there is little or no 2.4Ghz in the area you should be able to achieve this easily.

What is the maximum throughput with those 802.11g (Atheros 5212) wireless cards?

About 25Mbps effective througput in 1 direction.

You mean with the routerboard, right?

If you use a faster cpu like 1GHz, what will the maximum throughput be with the cards set in Turbo mode?

With 1GHz CPU, 5GHz-turbo, Nstreme enabled, 2.8.18 OS, lab conditions wireless throughput = 74Mbps.
People at MT reported even better apparently - perhaps they have later radio cards or OS build running.

See other posts I've made regarding our "productisation" of a 74Mbps-capable complete solution using MT. Takes a lot of the headaches and fault-finding away, even if it's not the cheapest.

I was not aware that 5G turbo worked over a 5Km distance, have you only tested 5Ghz, N-streme, 2.8.18 in the lab or have you tested in a live environment over distance ? if so what is the maximum distance that you have achieved this over ?

Hi there,

Our own tests are lab-only so far, we will be doing field tests very shortly.
However other users on this forum have reported 50Mbps at 35km(!).
Turbo mode and Nstreme only work at good signal levels, I take this to be better than -65dBm.

So for 5km no problems so long as you have the right directional antennas.

Excuse my ignorance here but I was always under the impression that 5Ghz only worked over very short distances so have not yet tested it, Are there specific frequences to turbo mode or can I use any of the frequencies in the 5.8Ghz band ie 5725-5825.

Hi Paul,

In Omnidirectional modeenvironments 5Ghz runs shorter than 2.4GHz
However with directional antennas, the higher gain achievable at 5GHz can make a better link than at 2.4GHz. Also in some countries (EU) we are allowed higher EIRP than 2.4GHz

5GHz turbo, have a look at the wireless interface settings, when you put it into turbo mode the frequency list choices reduce as it is bonding adjacent channels together -

Best advice is to have a look at a real link even in a lab test.

I have just changed over 1 of my 5Ghz links (20Km) to 5Ghz-turbo and my speeds have gone up from 13.3Mbps to 19Mbps Yipeeeee 6Mbps for free. I have standard RB230 and will be interested to test with 1Ghz CPU.

Hi Paul,

Well done !

If you are interested in our 1GHz solutions, suggest you contact me off-list - stephen.patrick@cablefree.co.uk otherwise you have to do a "home build" solution which in many users experience takes a lot of debugging.
Also 1GHz solutions consume a lot more power so you have to get rid of the heat generated. We solved all that.

I find your constant self promoting rather annoying. I guess most users in here like to develop there own solutions. Why don't you share your discoveries with us,as i recall you had a lot of questions about hardware your self.

Hi Timo,

Well I certainly apologise to anyone who finds these posts annoying.
Actually, I have had a good number of mails from people who really appreciate what we're doing, both creating shipping hardware solutions, alignment accessories, and software management.

If that's 10-20 very interested parties who find our work helpful and appreciate the answers, and just 1 annoyed, then on balance, I think we're doing quite a good job :)

FYI one of the comments here in the UK is the "support gap" between MT documentation and the combined h/w+s/w+site specific installation, and this is where equipment vendors fill an important role - we offer complete product + installation support. Of the total wireless users, only a small proportion have the skills or time to do home-build customised linux routers, debug the various working/non-working h/w and s/w combinations, as well as solve site issues.

I think also if you read my recent posts, the vast majority recently have been helping people who have serious bandwidth problems or concerns, either setting up MT or finding h/w +s/w combinations that work.
IMHO that's what this forum is for.

Hi

For those who think it is "helpful" to see what can be done with MT and are not "annoyed" by such posts -

Pictures of the newly assembled units and a screenshot from Winbox.
This is a 1.5GHz Pentium Mobile CPU which shows ~20% load with 74Mbps sustained TCP throughput, or 83Mbps UDP, 5.8GHz Turbo, Nstreme using 2.8.18. It has been running for weeks now without a glitch.
The "HPR" is the big box which would be suitable for high speed backhaul or as a high performance base station. The current box can take 3 radio cards, the final product will have a cooler 1GHz CPU, will take 4 radios and be fully weatherproof for outdoor mount in harsh conditions.
The "MPR" is routerboard-like in performance (10 or 25Mbps depending on which CPU speed) and would be for client sites for P2MP.

I have 56.1 km link at 5ghz-turbo. Effective throughput is 26-27 MBit... A little packet loss caused by n-streme (you can get it only if ping interval is 10ms...)

Btw... the problem comes because n-streme needs more signal-strenght... (needs below -60dBm and I have -67dBm)... But I have triple more bandwight than in standart turbo mode
