Winbox Feature suggestion.

Sun Mar 26, 2006 6:44 pm

It would be nice if it was easily possible to backup and download the configuration directly via winbox. Right now you have to ftp in and out your config, would be nice to just do it form winbox directly. And would be nice if it was possible to keep regular backup of the configuration automaticly for each router on the machine running the winbox. And not just the least config, would be nice for it to keep the last X number of backups. So that you can define how many you would like to keep.

You can drag files from the WinBox FILES window to your local machine without having to use FTP... just a hidden feature.

Thx,
Sam

Ahh thanks I didn't know that. :D Never saw it documented anywhere you could drag and drop anything from winbox.

Watch the drag and drop...
It can be un prodictable...

It seems to work ok for backup files but dont drag and drop package files.. (the tend to not xfer correctly)

I have rebuilt routers do to this..

I suggest the FTP method for package updates...

Winbox Feature Suggestion

Sat Jul 22, 2006 6:11 pm

For the backup files I would like to see ability to do "Save As" or rename the backup files so we can store multiple configuration files in the Files folder of RouterOS. This is a way to store at least a default configuration and other configurations that can be used as needed.

Right now the drag and drop features work reliably for small files. For RouterOS upgrade packages the drag and drop feature sometimes hangs up during the file copying process for files that are large.

Winbox Feature Suggestion

Sun Jul 23, 2006 7:18 pm

Yes I saw the backup email feature on the Wike which is great. However, what I was referring to in my earlier comment was a capability in the Winbox to allow naming of the backup file when the "backup" button is pressed. I would like to see a capability for multiple backup configuration files available on the RouterOS "File" folder.

Working locally and across the net I have never had corruption issues with winbox drag and drop. I do have ghost icons left on the desktop though. I have had some problems when using mac telnet/winbox but thats expected since its not using TCP.

When you click BACKUP in the files folder it does keep more than 1 copy, each one gets named with a time/date stamp and you can keep multiple copies. I don't think we're clear on what you want different.

Winbox Feature Suggestion

Mon Jul 24, 2006 5:03 am

Only thing I am asking for is the ability to specify a name for the backup file in Winbox. This can also be accomplished by providing a file rename capabiliy in the File Folder.

I'm using this thread, since it's called 'Winbox Suggestion', to add to that list.

It would really be nice to undock windows from within the WinBox window and let them roam the rest of my screen. I like to have a few interface graphs up but would like to minimize the rest.

Would be nice to keep the initial winbox screen open also.. I hate it constantly going away and having to re-launch it for every radio I need to look at.. Would be nice if it just would stay up so we could launch multiple instances..

I just figured out that winbox can not sort by the distance field under /ip route. That would be nice. Thanks!

When window is hidden behind other windows in WinBox it is unreachable unsil user moves (or closes) all windows to find it. Some option to access any open window is a must.

Yes, something similar to a task bar just for winbox would be handy.

I also have problem with winbox bug. When i for instance try to move simple queue (by mouse drag) but use low speed connection, it often happens that winbox deletes simple queue on old location, creates new simple queue record on new location adn then fails to set values from old position. It results in loosing settings for simple queue rule.

It should not delete old rule until it is certain that copy on new position is created properly.

How about remote winbox for clients that only have privet IPs.
You could winbox into the AP that the clients connect to and then winbox from there. Kinda link the mac telnet.

When I check DNS cache and decide to delete one record i get dialog that informs that funcion is not implemented. Not abig deal, but I have a habbit to select all record in cache and then press Del. It gives me headache each time.

Can you remove the delete option or implement it finally (this unimplemented dialog is present for a long time).

Remove certain menu items based on user rights

Wed Sep 20, 2006 11:12 pm

It would help very much if one can limit which menu items a user can see based on his user rights, i.e. I would like to give a user read-only rights but unfrutnately as part oif that he acn also see sensitive info such as radius secrets, local user name details in hotspot, etc. I want to be able to hide thse menu times from the user completely.

This could be done in terminal:
/system backup save name=<File name goes here>

Another issue: passwords should not be revealed in winbox. It is very annying when i open dialog with passwords shown and someone is near me.

I am not used to an idea that passwords are readable so I have no habbit not to open such dialog with third party presence, and it is quite strange if I have to ask others to leave the room because I have to open that dialog.

Simply hide passwords behind astersks, as it is common in whole software world.

You should not open near people you don't trust... it's a server not an spreadsheet.. and if the admin can't see the passwords it's not an admin...

World is full of strange people. I do nto have a need to get better opinion on mywelf by using MT but to use it to do the job, and it is quite comon that I have to access MT wrom variousplaces, which I cannot controll. That is why passwords are used for: to allow person to access something from anywhere, but keep access secured.

i reall;y do not have aclue why possibility to see the passwords makes someone an admin. I thought posibility to change any password is what admins can do if neccessary.

That's pretty much total BS. Take a look at any windows server, or linux server... or BSD... or OSX.... or any server environment.

although no other operating system hides the ppp secrets of users (because an admin often has to tell users their ppp passwords), we will make a button in winbox that hides the passwords when not needed.

As I mentioned in other post, it is possible to disable password column.
Press down arrow button after the last column , chose show columns and uncheck password.

Thanks guys this is realy nice.
Is there a possibility that you guys can make it that users with read access on the routerboard can only see the asterisks and no passwords.

"see" = "read"

you should make some "dumb" user if you don't want him to see anything important. "how" is another question.

actually users with read access cannot see passwords already, only ppp secrets.

you could actually store your users on a radius server, then you won't have such problems. In what situations would such dumb mode be useful? Why do you allow untrusted people to access your router?

We have users (= dumb) with read access to gain knowledge, but we would like to keep passwords like ppptp passwords secret with or without the Hide Password tick box

See we run a community driven wireless user group, so its kinda like a playground for wireless enthusiasts. We have readonly accounts on our rbs so the users can have a look at how routing is done and so forth. Now some of there rbs have ppptp connection that not all users should be able to see, and we would like to keep that a secret. Raduis is a nice idea but its kind to big for us atm.
