I am trying to setup a PPTP connection to my home network. I have followed this http://networkingforintegrators.com/2012/08/how-to-vpn/ guide for setting it up and cannot get a connection. In the log I can see the TCP connection established but then nothing else and eventually the connection will timeout on my device.

In the two section for IP addresses in that guide for local address I used 192.168.88.100 and for remote I used 192.168.87.100.

I am pretty new at this so be gentle please and any help is greatly appreciated.

I thought it might be important to point out that PPTP connection may work though some ISP's but not others. I have one set up on our network in Burnsville, MS and from my office in Corinth, MS I can't connect to it. It does the same as you describe yours would do. Yet from my son's home in Iuka, MS I have no troubles connection though PPTP link.

Just to be sure try connecting from a totally different network.

Shouldn't be an issue with my ISP, I actually work for them and know that we aren't blocking any ports or anything else. I can actually see the TCP connection established in the router log and then it goes no further.
