RB2011 Comcast & Surfboard SB6141 WAN Speed

Wed Nov 04, 2015 3:59 pm

Hey all, I just picked up a MikroTik Routerboard RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN. I'm not an IT engineer but I went to school for CS and work in the industry as a programmer/IT/system admin.

I swapped out my existing router and installed the RB2011 and noticed I wasn't getting my full WAN download speed. Usually it's around 50 Mbps and after the swap it was anywhere from 10-30 Mbps. Thinking it was the RB2011, I messed with settings and tried to see if there was something I was missing.

Finally I decided to make sure it wasn't the RB2011, so I plugged my old router in, still 10-30 Mbps. Then I tried direct to the modem, 85 Mbps.

I use testmy.net and speedtest.net to check my speeds and they both show 10-30 Mbps. Also I check my speeds every so often but I did not check the speeds right before the swap.

I noticed the Surfboard SB6141 modem would only serve out an IPv6 address via DHCP to my PC.

Lastly, I tried setting up the RB2011 for IPv6 DHCP client which seemed to work but did not resolve my speed issues.

Does anyone have any ideas what's going on? If so, what next?

Thanks!

The 2011 should be able to handle up to ~200 Mbps depending on the config. The 6141 should really have not bearing on this, with the exception of what type of service you have with comcast. If you have residential, you will only get 1 IPv4 address, but you can get multiple IPv6 prefixes (limited by the modem). If you can't get an IPv4 address, make sure you go to the modem diagnostics page ( http://192.168.100.1/cmConfig.htm ) and reset all defaults then restart the cable modem. This will clear out the cached mac address the modem has. If you have business class service, you get up to five dynamic IPv4 addresses.

If this still doesn't help you should post your router config / export.

I get an IPv4 address via DHCP Client on the RB2011. I have residential and have reset all defaults a few times now trying to get this speed issue resolved.

The real concern here is that both my old router Netgear R7000 and this MikroTik aren't giving me the full WAN speed.
I can send over the router config/export later today.

Should I be getting my full WAN speed after resetting the router defaults and configuring the router using Quick Set or is there more entailed?

I'm asking because at this point I'm not setting any Firewall rules, forwarding etc. until my speed issue is resolved.

It seems like your issue isn't the router.

If the mikrotik and the netgear gives the same issue the the issue must be with the modem or the connection between the modem and ISP.

Is the cable between the modem and router connecting at 100Mbps full duplex?

I have seen similar issues when there is a duplex mismatch

I think that did the trick! Thank you biomesh :)

I have some other speed issues to resolve. I use Powerline adapters to in lieu of running ethernet throughout the house. Seems I don't get full speed on those but I'll troubleshoot and report back.
