Intel 82599ES 10Gig card and SFP+ modules compatibility

Wed Dec 23, 2015 10:08 pm

Hi all,

I was using Supermicro based server under Linux for some period and the Lan card based on Intel 82599ES chip was working fine. Now I'm trying to use it with Router os for x86 and ether(s) are visible, but the ports are down, and I suspect that it's not "liking" the SFP+ module.

I read many articles on the net saying that 82599ES support only specific SFP+ modules.

How to be sure that this is the issue, and not something else? I know under linux there is workaround for SFP incompatibility through the driver allow_unsupported_sfp=1 option, but how to achieve the same under RouterOs?

Any ideas would be helpful.

According to http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Supported ... t_chipsets,
Intel 82599ES - Intel X520 series adapters 5.x & 6.x Works, fine! Note: has SFP transceiver vendor restrictions: http://www.intel.com/support/network/ad ... 030612.htm
so as you mentioned, it could be the case.

Which SFP transceivers are you using?

ROS doesn't allow you to add drivers, so I doubt being possible to set that unsupported flag unless Mikrotik releases a modified ROS.

Mikrotik support is your last resort to see if there's any workaround.

Another possibility, would be flashing the 10G card a firmware (if that exists) that removes the limitation from the EEPROM, to "unlock" the card itself.

We have checked this Intel driver SFP vendor lock thing and so far we haven't managed to disable it. Using Intel 10G modules remains the only option.

Strange enough,

how is it running under Linux, with same SFP+ transceivers that don't want to work under RouterOS?

Could you update on this issue? Did Mikrotik enable ixgbe allow_unsupported_sfp=1,1 in ROS?

I'm in the same boat, except I'm using a Ubiquity 10G (UF-SM-10G) in mikrotik (works perfectly) and in the Intel X520 (Incompatible)

Conclusion: Don't buy an Intel PCI card which is locked down by bad firmware and/or hardware restraints.
