The Dude is back! v6.34rc test build released

Fri Dec 04, 2015 4:15 pm

We have published the first public test of our restarted project The Dude. At the moment it is just a refreshed version of the same Dude software that we had in v4b3, but is adapted to work correctly with RouterOS v6 with a few minor changes in it. This will be a base on which we will start building The Dude for the future.

* The Dude server is now a RouterOS npk package that must be updated together with RouterOS
* The Dude client is pretty much the same as it was before just with server side removed. If it will detect that servers side is running newer version it will offer to update it self to matching version.

Removed features:
* Windows server
* Language selection for The Dude client
* Web interface

Note that new The Dude client wont work with older versions and vice-versa

The Dude server packages and Windows client application are available for download under: Tile, CHR and x86 selections in the RC release chain.

Download page:
http://www.mikrotik.com/download

Renewed documentation for current versions of The Dude (still work in progress):

Known issues in v6.34rc45(updated) (reported for fixing):

All entries below are already confirmed and reported to DEV for fixing.

High priority problems:
* Device discovery tool does not work with Agents.

Low priority problems:
* Adapt dude link labels to be able to show 10G traffic
speed and larger (snmp part left to fix)

Enhancement requests:
* Add checkbox in dude client loader to allow upgrade/downgrade without prompting
user each time.
* Add option to use functions and oids in notification messages.

Fixed issues and added features:
* Leftovers of web interface configuration is not yet removed.
* Dude does not know how to show ROS version (broken due to
changes in ROS, update needed)
* In log settings configuration, sliders are broken.
* When opening panel in separate windows error pops up, it
does not affect the usage tho.
* When changing icon appearance on network map dude does
not assign right image in some cases.
* Open panel separately broken.
* Spectral scan may crash Dude client
* SNMP walk crashes the dude client
* Torch tool in dude also is broken
* Use of ping tool causes the dude client to disconnect.
* Any section export to CSV function broken, crashes the dude client
* Bandwidth test tool graphs broken.
* XML backup import fails.
* Large DB export fixed.
* Link label - Mastering type: ROS broken.
* Scan tool - removed for now till it's reworked.
* Telnet tool - dude will throw out error if telnet client is not available on system where
dude client is installed.
* Dude tool - Corrected dude.exe launch path. Now the client will look for executable
in it's installation dir and not by some full path.
* Added 10G link type - Will be added by default only for new installations.
* Torch tool - fixed.
* Added option to run dude client from shortcut in secure mode by adding argument "--secure".
* Corrected 10G link monitoring/counters for ROS devices. (snmp fix for this will come later)
* Fixed issue where dude client would freeze if link label mastering type was snmp
and it was created or modified.
* Ping tool - fixed local pinger.
* Auto discovery tasks are now separated between network maps.
* Fixed file upload to server.
* SMTP authentication and tls options added!
* ROS upgrade function fixed
* Fixed server crash that some people where experiencing.
* CHR host upgrade fixed.
* DNS name resolving fixed in loader (will however work only after loader is upgraded to rc45)
* Added db vacuuming option
* Added progress indicator to import/export/vacuuming
* Dude server by default on new installations is now disabled.

Time will tell, cannot say anything at this point yet.

Hmm.. Did you realize that you only need to install Dude-server to one router?

Also, as "quick and dirty workaround", it's probably possible to install x86- or CHR-ROS to virtual machine running on your Windows-machine and run Dude there. :)

Yep, you definitely should avoid "Windows-only" solutions and try to do this platform independently from the begin. And web interface is usually the easiest way.. But let see what happens, I love this already. :)

You can even run it in other OS, just make a Virtualbox image with CHR RouterOS running and use it as a server. Then use Wine to launch Dude client.

Maybe in future we could re-implement it through standard Gettext (PO) not like we had previously, time will tell how difficult it is. This is just the first step to re-opening Dude development, anything is possible now.

Making a new Web interface would take a lot of effort. We wanted to start with something. Other features could come back later in the future.

Hi Mikrotik Team (and others using the existing version)

At the moment I (and a number of people I work with) use Dude 4.0B3 on RB450G units as dedicated low power local monitoring units in locations. These are running only the Dude and have a MicroSD card inside them for storage. Also as CCR's have begun to replace 1100AHx2 and 1200 devices I would love to be able to move these into service as Dude nodes.

I know this would be more development work for the team however I have found the 450G platform has plenty of power to run a reasonably sized node and I believe the PPC devices could likewise provide a fantastic platform and continue to make use of this hardware going forward.

If other people currently use the 450G and its ilk or have a number of PPC units they want to press into additional service and would see serious use from the Dude then please bring your use cases into a new Dude topic on use cases for other hardware platforms and hopefully we can make a compelling case for inclusion.

I can understand completely why MIPSLE may not be a good candidate for this development effort and the SMIPS platform as well, but to me the new ARM (3011) PPC (1100, 1000, 1200, 850) and MIPSBE (450, 2011) make brilliant monitoring and network administration boxes that work wonderfully for the Dude.

I know myself I use 1100AHx2 units and 450G units as network access gateways coming from the NOC, in datacentres there will be standard routers for user / public traffic and then one of the above units (depending on site size etc) with ports into various switchports / network segments and making use of VLANS and direct connections to provide an inbound direct NOC route into each L2 domain. These boxes are ex network routers which have been replaced or upgraded and have plenty of cycles free to run the dude.

Please consider adding ARM, PPC, and MIPSBE into the supported architectures for Dude ROS Package.

Regards
Alexander

What winbox is included ?
It does not open my saved sessions. I have changed default path maybe that is the problem. I want to try to symlink them. And menu bar is not showing and I can't open an existing session file.

R.I.P. Windows server. Oh well, we can't have everything.

But it brings one problem. Dude can export maps as images. With Windows server, another webserver on same machine could read exported images and make them available for including in webpage. It's not possible with RouterOS Dude, because the images are somewhere on the disk where they are not accessible to user.
What about saving the images to dedicated directory (not in "files" with all the other stuff; assuming it currently uses the same folder structure as on Windows) and making that available using the RouterOS webserver? Just add a symlink, so that images would appear under http(s)://<router>/maps/<mapname>.<ext>, it would be enough.

Dude client does this. It still runs on Windows. Or maybe I am misunderstanding something?

Server exports images too. When you have map open in client, click Settings button on toolbar, then in map properties window select the last Export tab. Choose type and interval and fresh images will appear in Dude's files directory. But with Dude agent running under RouterOS, you have no supported way to get to them.

Better late than never!

Well, it's just, like, my (humble) opinion, but The Dude has always been in trouble with both hard things in computer science: naming and (SNMP) cache invalidation.

I guess we got used to its name by now, but someone should really deal with the SNMP problem described here by lebowski (best username in this forum ).

Cheers!

Yes I realized that, of course.
I used the Dude to "sporadically" monitor the network, since some of my network peers are a little bothered by the probes sent to them.
Under windows, I just started up Dude, checked what I have to check and stopped it again. Which was very handy.

Running it permanently on a router is not an option in my case. And I have mipsbe and PPC routers only, anyway. VM - maybe, but it is still inconvenient.
But I can live with the old version, no problem. Since others are happy with the new direction, it is OK.

Without API and possibility to "trigger" external script The Dude is only a toy.

NMS isn't only a tool for check that all my devices are up or down but now, more than past years NMS are really integrated in the networks. I think about implementations that ask to NMS about network load and modify network routing by MPLS/SDN.

NMS require flexibility, multiple vendors device, more source than SNMP.

We also need more smart notifications (don't send my notifications about childs nodes down when all parents are down).

At the moment i think that the only unique features of The Dude is the interface for draw and view network devices and links.

This post made my day today!!!

THE DUDE IS BACK!!!

This is an AWSOME day for us true Dude-believers!
We believed so hard even when the project seemed stone dead, that it rose from the grave! ;) hehe

I am so happy now, this means I do not have to explore further the few other options that I had to start looking at and can continue to use my beloved Dude database!

Mikrotik, THANK YOU for listening to your customers!

And guys, plz dont critisize and bash MT on whats missing already within 24h of the reboot of the Dude-developement, lets celebrate the re-awakening of Dude and give them plenty of constuctive ideas and feedback from now on forward to make the best Dude there has ever been!

Long live The DUDE ! 8)

It's awesome that a new version of Dude is out! No one would expect this.

BUT not having the option to run the server on windows (or even linux which would be better IMHO) is a HUGE step back!
You might as well had left it as it were...

Mikrotik RouterOS is a router. Not a monitoring system.
It's funny how many feature requests are being rejected on just that premise. That RouterOS is a router and not **** (whatever the feature request was).
It seems that you turned around on your own words.

I really don't like this. Too bad you took one step forward and two steps back...

And NO, it's not about money (since now Dude is essentially not free as it needs a routeros installation).

By the way, I wonder how will this work on routers with multiple interfaces (where it won't be an option to have dedicated router just for Dude - how bad is that scenario? Running a whole router just to use Dude?!).
Will the probes originate from whatever IP has each outgoing interface? Will this be configurable? Or do we have to make a mess of our SNMP servers' access lists to accommodate for that?

Also if someone needs to keep running his/hers already huge installation of Dude (hundreds of devices and numerous maps) they must buy an expensive router now just to be able to handle Dude?

Really bad decision. I hope you change your mind.

And before someone says 'Why are you complaining, it's free!', I am sure that all of us that use Dude professionally (even though completely unsupported for years and years) will be more than happy to pay for a licensed version of it, but with the workflow and architecture kept intact in upcoming versions, not change the whole thing upside down just for the sake of it (I donno, like for example not being able to run a monitoring system on a server?! I know I am being crazy right? )

When using Tools -> Ping on a device and the connection to server is closed. After that it immediately reconnects. This happens every time I try.

Hi Cha0s

I would politely disagree with some of your points here. I think the beauty of this change actually satisfies some of your requests, sure the windows server is gone, but we now essentially have a linux server version of it (x86 RouterOS package) which is a wonderful step forward. Mikrotik provides a free with registration license which would allow anyone to run up a small VM in their monitoring environment (or an embedded PC / dedicated router) and run the dude on that (this saves the cost of a windows license so even more free). This helps to eliminate a number of support emails etc where the windows firewall etc was getting in the way and provides a known underlying platform for Mikrotik to manage development over. This also allows for a lot of power in network design for people providing the Dude installation with firewall protection, routing rules, etc.

With your comment about which interface / IP Address the requests will be sourced from this will likely be controlled via the routing table and other parts of the system as it used to be with the old NPK package. Directly connected subnets will use the IP Address attached to that subnet, other subnets will follow which route entry in the routing table matches the subnet and should use the preferred source if set. I would like to see them add the ability to tell the router to put the dude package into a VRF in future (with the V7 full VRF Isolation) to allow more specific rules for people who want to use something like a CCR1072 as a large router and monitoring platform (or monitoring platform plus maybe cache etc).

Mikrotik have also added features over time that are not strictly router features, including SMB (some home routers do it but its not common on infrastructure routers), and other features that have some crossover with routing but have traditionally not been aligned (Web proxy springs to mind) and they have features that on many other hardware vendors would only be found on specialised hardware and not on their main lot. This is one of the strengths of Mikrotik that they bring all the features to a wide range of devices and you pick the size based on the loading required. I see network monitoring as something very core to what network engineers deal with every day to ensure we have a good quality networking running properly. In this was I do see this as a good candidate for inclusion into RouterOS as an optional package and even better that this now gives us a strong routing platform underneath that we can reliably control the network settings for the router and the strength of the linux platform for the server to run on. Then we have the client (windows or Wine) which lets us get into the system to look at the results and interface with it.

Absolutely you can raise objections to their changes even if the product is free, Mikrotik want this to be used and for people to raise legitimate use cases helps them guide future development of the product and ensure it is the best fit it can be for users. I would like to see a few changes made myself:

1. Add API's to both the windows client and the router itself (or a second API interface on the router) to allow us better signalling and gathering of information. This could be very useful to interface with new external notification systems, assess impact and provide update systems, etc.

2. Add ARM, MIPSBE, PPC versions of the package - more flexibility with hardware selection

I am sure we will all have further ideas to contribute to further development of the Dude going forward and I would expect Mikrotik have a list as long as your arm of features they want to add / improve. I for one am very excited to see how this proceeds in the future.

Alexander

maybe a mipsbe device canot be powerful enough to move a medium instance of the dude

normally a medium instance of the dude have a database of 200mbyte or more and takes a big amount of cpu when a consulting historical data

My reason for suggesting MIPSBE is for situations like the 450G (and can work for other similar series devices) plus devices like the 2011 series, these have been great for small installations in the past and can be great out in the field for a number of things including local logging (don't monitor over a remote link but test things locally where bandwidth is better and testing can be performed) and also monitoring for outbound connectivity (check from the remote site what their outbound connection is like - can be useful for post event investigation etc).

For this sort of situation a MIPSBE device can provide enough grunt to monitor a small outpost and keep logging away, while it may not be quite as power efficient as the latest and greatest chips its a smaller load than an x86 box or a CCR (and MIPSBE also provides for 2011 a more recent model)

One of the things I have always loved about Mikrotik is how they provide almost all features to almost every architecture and model. This way if you only have a need for a small use of it a smaller device may be usable and the performance grows with the device. I could understand the Dude being introduced to almost every model (I understand SMIPS may be limited in commands in the instruction set, I don't have this confirmed) and just a warning clearly on the download and installation that the Dude can be a significant load and it is not recommended for smaller devices.

If I minimize the Dude client (top right corner - )it closes and has no memory of the server. If I close (with the top right corner X) the Dude remembers the server.

I love that its back and LOVE it more that I was able to migrate from 4Beta to 6.3 what I would like to know is if DUDE is limited to the 1mb traffic on the free Version of ROUTEROS?

That would suck since I pretty sure with all the maps and admins connecting to it that its can do more than a meg of traffic.

Well I just confirmed it ... DUDE on the free ROUTER OS is crippled because of the 1mbit traffic cap.

With well over 100 nodes with almost all doing snmp traffic graphs and other custom stuff limits its ability to properly monitor the network as I did with the 4.0beta until I can find a work around I cant use this version.

Do you mean in the new CHR?

Or are you saying there is now a 1Mbps routing limit on x86 Free license?

AFAIR x86 Free License has no routing performance limit, just the limited number of some other features. For CHR Mikrotik clearly announced a 1Mbps limit on that at the moment while they work on it and sort out licensing.

Yes best news but its bit difficult for us to use it now without any android client (showing notification is enough)
after all we can't keep a pc on 24/7 and then pay a staff to look at the event if your network is small

so mikrotik please announce a dude android client that can just show notification

but think of rural areas where it's hard to get power 24/7
in that situation keeping a PC on just for alerting is just wastage of money

have you checked nagios and anag app for android ??
some thing like that will be very useful

Hi Everyone! Thanks for the feedback. Like we wrote in the first topic, this is just the first step. There are many things that need updating, and there are many things that will come later.

Running Winbox, scripts, exporting maps, executing commands on the server - those things don't work yet, but we will work on those.

All on this list should consider that The Dude is free. Maximizing the Feature wish list might be frustrating for the developer. Developing an maintaining an Android app is a seperate Project which takes a lot of time and effort. I am happy when the Dude itself gets some work done first.

But why develop a separate Android app. I want this functionality too of course. It will be easier if the Dude server package gets a small menu in winbox for showing alert log and currently downed hosts. And this menu can be browsed in Tik-App.

Browsing does not help. You need a notification on the Smartphone. So a sound and something in the notification bar. SMS is the best for this as it does not need a (permanent) data connection of the receiving Smartphone. My dude sends SMS even if it is not reachable by Network (something I Need to know) as it has a UMTS Dongle.

Android APP is nice to have but not at the first place.

What you are proposing will be good for many people, but it will take more time. And I'm not saying it should not be done, but I don't expect it any time soon. And my network is not so small so I don't want a notification for all devices. For important ones I am using NMA (Notify My Android) - it works very good, i just set an email target for alert, type my nma account there and recieve a push notification on my phone.
But still what I am proposing can be done sooner I think and not at the expense of the other. This way I can just open Tik-App in the morning on the way to work and see the current situation of the entire network in a glance.

Dude windows client can already exectute local utilities and batch files. It can run a tool that sends an SMS. You don't need an app or RouterOS support for that.

The manual you linked, talks about notifications run on the Dude Client!
You are mixing up Server and Client sides. Please read the manual carefully.

Manual is about Client, a Windows program.
Server on RouterOS is only checking device status. All actions are done in the Dude Client!

You need Dude Windows client in any case. Server does not do anything without the Windows Client.
I've installed the Dude on a CHR v6.34rc after a bit effort to import the VMDK image. I think the Dude needs a mini dashboard in the Webfig/Winbox to see it's running and the current activity. ie devices scanned/min, Dude network traffic, Dude CPU%. The Dude server should send the notifications without an active client.

I exported the Dude config but it didn't contain anything significant like the config. (\dude export file=dude.config)

The Dude floods the 1Mb/s CHR limited traffic until the mimic is populated with devices and status.

In a VMware install how do you increase the Disk capacity of the CHR device. VMware can be used to increase the allocation but there's no means for the CHR to merge the extra allocation. This would soon need to be done with a large Dude install.

The minimize control on the top right of the window crashes the Dude client and it quits.

why in the wiki, there are two points, and only one in the interface
The Notifications pane configures any actions that can be taken when a device status changes. The predefined Notifications are the following:

Beep - Makes a beeping sound from the PC speaker of the server PC
Flash - Flashes the Dude taskbar menu
Log to Events - Saves information to local Event log
Log to Syslog - Saves information to Syslog
Popup - Opens a small notification window
You can also add new Notifications, more types are available in the add dialog.

Email - Sends email, need to specify Server address. Authentication not supported.
Execute locally - Run command on the local Windows machine (where Dude viewer runs), can pass variables
Execute on server - Run command on the Dude server machine, can pass variables
Sound - Plays sound. Sound files can be uploaded and chosen here
Group - Executes a group of actions
Speak - Uses Windows speach ability to say the message in a computerised voice
Log - Saves to local Dude Log file
Syslog - Saves to remote Syslog server. Need to specity Syslog address
both teams dude performs client ?

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/images/9/99/Du ... ions-2.JPG

I not found execute on server

I did this a bit it differently, I addend another disk to VM and changed dude data path to it.

Just a thought, Are you using a CHR with bandwidth limited interface? Looking at the transfer on the client it's getting slowed in it's communication because of the trial setting of CHR.

So much requirements. Everyone wants something different. Wouldn't be better to stabilise the functionality, make corrections of bugs and then think about new features?

Mikrotik, keep what's now, return back to Windows server and implement the regular / manual database defragmentation as it is something that everyone working with larger maps and recording long rows of data will appreciate.

I have some of each type of the dude servers, including limited and no-limit CHR servers. Client does not experience any minimize problems with any of them.

Just a thought, Are you using a CHR with bandwidth limited interface? Looking at the transfer on the client it's getting slowed in it's communication because of the trial setting of CHR.
I have some of each type of the dude servers, including limited and no-limit CHR servers. Client does not experience any minimize problems with any of them.
Earlier when I tried to do a channel scan on a Groove the Dude crashed with a report. I emailed the crash dump and the ticket is "[Ticket#2015120666000155] RE: Dude 6.34rc16 crash". Hopefully this will help to id version and linked libraries.

I've tested with a full x86 router install on VMware free player now and still it won't minimize.

hi all
just installed and noticed a few oddities

When I added a few networks in network maps and started to conf it, I saw that in the settings of any map I see all avtoscan. Previously, each map had its avtoscan.
When I try to go inside the map, I see only Loading ...

new problem
then i try to ping some host, windows client disconnected from the server, and reconnected after a few seconds

Hi
i have sugestion for Mikrotik team. Please add the comment box next to the property static. This makes it possible for example. Describe fibers with a fiber distribution frame. It would have been nice if the memo field as the field label was a device which can break down the rows.
Good Job whit dude back:)

I don't quite get your request. Either way in links menu it is possible to add notes to each link. Can't you add this info there?

Does anyone of you have had any luck to export config from dude v4 beta (windows) and import it to the latest x86 ROS (free license via vmware) version? I have personally connection loop (after import data from old version), dude client connected, then showing the map (each device seems to be active - green, which is wrong, because dude doesn't have connectivity in lab network), after a while (1-2s) on the status bar client writes error: connection closed and again. VCPU in ROS is very heavily used during this scenario, ROS is constantly writing to disk (dude process). I've imported 200 MB database with historical data. Any ideas?

Maybe you can try to make the users in new dude server first, log by the user existing in the imported file and then try to import. It may help.

Thank you for suggestion. I did that:
- removed dude store from x86 ROS,
- I've logged correctly from client without the password,
- I've created same admin's credentials as in original dude server,
- logged in (successfully) using modified credentials,
- imported config using:
dude import-db file=backup-2015.12.08.tgz
Did you suggest this way?

Unfortunately same thing happened. Reconnect loop. I have no logs @ ROS. Client gives only connection closed and tries to reconnect (if configured).

* That x86 installations is CHR image or standard ROS?
* Generate supout file on that ROS where dude server is working and send it to support. I'll check what I can see in debug log side.

Probably a dumb question - but you are discussing this running on arm - you are talking about the client right?

Not the router, i.e. so the dude package will run on the rb3011 right?

I am, obviously, new to The Dude. Does anyone recommend a "newbie" guide or getting started post? I will begin here and search through the forums. I did find the Mikrotik Wiki on the new Dude. Just wondering if anyone had a great resource they would recommend.

Thanks in advance!

Currently there are only server packages available for: CCR series, x86 and CHR RouerOS hosts. Client however is Windows app, but that does not stop you to run it in linux/macos under wine.

If you want to start with dude it is the safest way to install 4b3 in Windows environment. At least until the new ros dude package will be widely proven to be able to work correctly. Then you can move to it if you see it useful for you somehow.

For the time we will only have the dude server for previously mentioned ROS hosts. Time will tell if anything will change.

@foxch2

I have seen similar problem that sometimes changes are not being saved. However I haven't found a way to reproduce it. It tends to happen only now and then plus without any logic in actions that you perform in dude. Most probably if you will try it again the deletion of probe will be executed.

* Windows server
* Language selection for The Dude client
* Web interface

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:The_Dude

I have being wainting to see this kind of message for 5 years ! Thankyou Mikrotik !! We all need it !

I´ll close the online petition now.

Some update on your currently reported problems with The Dude test builds.

Some yet unconfirmed reports:
* Some add/remove actions are not written to memory and are not in place after
reconnect to the same dude server.

If anyone has managed to reproduce these and know exact steps on how to reproduce them please do share.

All entries below are already confirmed and reported to DEV for fixing.

Low priority problems:
* Leftovers of web interface configuration is not yet removed.
* In log settings configuration, sliders are broken.
* When opening panel in separate windows error pops up, it does not affect the usage tho.
* When changing icon appearance on network map dude does not assign right image in some cases.
* fix dude import for larger DB files. Import action times out in cli, but import anyhow finishes
successfully after a while.

Medium priority problems:
* Files cannot be uploaded to dude server by client software, transfer fails with status "invalid file"
* Any section export to CSV function broken, crashes the dude client
* If host has been assigned as parent it cannot be copied or deleted, action crashes the dude client
* Use of ping tool causes the dude client to disconnect.

Higher priority problems:
* Dude does not know how to show ROS version (broken due to changes in ROS, update needed)
* ROS upgrade function broken (probably wont work without fixing version displaying problem)
* Spectral scan may crash Dude client
* SNMP walk crashes the dude client

Enhancement requests:
* Auto-discovery automated lists should be separate for each network map.
* Add smtp authorization options in the dude

Is 2GB database size limit fixed?
It can be used on CCR, that is nice, but what about disk space? CCR has only 1GB (at least 1036 has) and flash is not good for heavy writes. Is it possible to store the Dude data to an external storage?

By what developer thinks on this topic is that 2GB DB limit might have been problem on on some FAT type formatted file systems. If you attach some storage that is formatted with EXT3 fs then it shouldn't be a problem.

Why not? Just attach some USB hdd/ssd.

About 2GB limitation of DB , on Dude4.0beta3 i had this problem even in ROS v6.19 so the ext3 was not the solution .

Anything changed in new version ?

What about CCR performance with the Dude? Is it multi threaded? Will it work well with a network of hundreds or thousands devices?

UPD: Another good feature would be vacuuming of the sqlite3 database.

As stated in the beginning. 6.34rc server works only with 6.34rc client. Fine. Now the situation:

Normally running 4b3 server for years in windows. Now I would like to check how it would run in ros. So I have installed 6.34rc19 on a device together with the dude package. Moved the dude store to second disk. Disconnected the client installed on my computer from the actually running server a tried to connect to new "testing" dude server.

I was asked to confirm the dude client to autoupgrade to version 6.34rc19. And then what? If I agree, I will not be able to connect to my productive dude server anymore or I will need to install / reinstall the client each time I want to log to the second server? Not handy.

Can I have both clients safely installed in one windows7 system?

Hi,
this is great news, thank you.

Please consider adding these to the wishlist:

Simple features:
1. access to maps image exports generated by default in /var/store/dude1/files/ (or better access to the whole dir)
2. regular export of devices (and possibly other sections) to csv or xml on the server (so it can be downloaded and used by external scripts)
3. running scripts on the server

More complex features:
1. native Linux support (remove dependency on ROS or help us create agent helper app by providing documentation, see this post: http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php ... 57#p507148)
2. optionally use external database (e.g. MySQL or PostgreSQL)
3. external API (this could solve many other feature requests such as exporting, making mobile clients, etc.)

Possible bugs:
1. can anybody confirm the bug in ping probe (showing either 0 or 10 ms in graph) known from 4.0beta3?
2. how about this SNMP bug (http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=43359)?

Thank you.

Yes the new CHR limits the traffic that DUDE trys to create doing its tasks with in turn hampers snmp and other monitoring severally.

Alexander

Very excited to see Dude being developed again.

My Wishlist:
WEB Interface: Need to be able to check the network status in the field. It is nice use my phone and VPN in check the status. This is the only thing that may keep my company from upgrading.

Will it work on a Level 1 licence with multiple clients logged-in?

First of all, congratulations, MikroTik! I was waiting for this day for quite some time now. And let me tell you why..

You have routers, switches, cpe's, ap's - basically almost everything small to medium size WISP needs. And The Dude is like a glue for all this MikroTik ecosystem. You can quickly access devices via winbox, monitor traffic, access terminal, use tools like torch, spectral scan, wireless scan, bandwidth test, etc in a very convenient way (and they all work via proprietary MT protocol, which I'm ok with, because you don't need to additionally configure anything since it ships prepared (at least it should in theory)). For those that are almost 100% MT based, this is an essential and extremely convenient tool that saves lots of effort and provides functionality that otherwise would have to be implemented via several different products, each with its own complexities and still wouldn't deliver the same convenience. It's tremendous advantage and one of the things that keep me loyal to MT. I'm so used to it, I can't imagine myself letting it go.

Here's the story of my Dude..

Even if it was considered abandonware, I'm still using The Dude till now. There are of course limitations and bugs, but somehow I've found ways of dealing with them and ended up quite happy. I've dropped the Windows based server long ago and for a few years I'm using x86 ROS running as Xen DomU guest. It's of course v5.26, since that was the last version that used to work with 4.0b3.. But it works like charm: counts uptime of almost 1.5 years now (got down only because of hardware upgrade), monitors >2000 devices, collects bandwidth data of wireless and ethernet links, sends emails, sms notifications and even calls my phone in case of critical emergencies. There are some wizardry done with vlans, bridges and interfaces, ending up with The Dude machine having filtered access to all the parts of the network it needs to access and monitor.

To address a couple of the requests made by others I have something to say:
- The Android/iOS version or implementation would be nice, but I think the Windows client version has to be mature in the first place. The same applies for web version. Even now you can permanently run The Dude client in a dedicated or virtual machine with Linux (via Wine) or even Windows and access it via VNC/RDP. If you're paranoid about security, VPNs and other tunneling options are there for you. In this modern age of large screen smartphones and LTE everywhere, it's quite good and convenient solution. I'm using it everyday and have nothing to complain about.
- If it saves MikroTik any effort and speeds up development, keep only ROS version of The Dude server-side. The quality shouldn't suffer from the desire to be universal.

And finally, my personal wishes and suggestions:
- Fix the 'export to file' in Windows client. Now the client crashes and fails to make an export on large Dude setups (though I see you added this function via cli, so it's probably going the right way);
- Fix the 32-bit only SNMP counters and do something to make it possible to collect RB260GS bandwidth graphs (again - MT ecosystem!);
- Upgrade winbox in The Dude or make it possible to drop in the latest winbox.exe ourselves;
- Make some user roles not only to limit changes to The Dude, but also for non-admin users not to be able to connect via winbox to ROS devices or even better - for different user groups to connect using different users in device's ROS (for example guest);
- Make the Dude server multi-threaded;

It's already a great piece of software, it needs so little to become even greater :)
Thanks for the great news again! Good luck :)

it is still inconvenient. But I can live with the old version, no problem. Since others are happy with the new direction
Just to add my penny's worth, Inconvenient is my situation too, Ill have to stick to the old version until a windows version is available again, I'm not about to get a x86 server just to run the Dude

You can run x86 virtually on the same windows you are running dude now. But I understand you as I am in the same situation.

I have two things,
1 reqeust
1) Is it possible to add authentication to email settngs.
Now it is not possible to configure email notifications when the server requires authentication.

2 question

2) Is it possible to use the Dude as syslog server for all our devices?
Must I send the syslog events to the Dude server?
Please some help.

@taduikis
- Fix the 'export to file' in Windows client. Now the client crashes and fails to make an export on large Dude setups (though I see you added this function via cli, so it's probably going the right way);
If you mean DB import/export, then yes. It has been moved to ROS cli side.
- Fix the 32-bit only SNMP counters and do something to make it possible to collect RB260GS bandwidth graphs (again - MT ecosystem!);
Some examples please from recent build. DEV seems to remember such problem only from older v3 dude.

Regarding RB260, it has really week processor so it struggles with the dude probes. The device it self should be monitored with increased probe intervals. Links with SWoS devices should however be monitored from other side linked interface. Same problem applies there, the processor simply chokes on those requests from dude.
- Upgrade winbox in The Dude or make it possible to drop in the latest winbox.exe ourselves;
We will think about what to do with winbox in the dude client, dev is aware of this request.
- Make some user roles not only to limit changes to The Dude, but also for non-admin users not to be able to connect via winbox to ROS devices or even better - for different user groups to connect using different users in device's ROS (for example guest);
- Make the Dude server multi-threaded;
These ones are already for future the dude version, at this point we want to get it back running and deal with current bugs in it.

Congratulations for new version of Dude .
About 2GB limitation of DB , on Dude4.0beta3 i had this problem even in ROS v6.19 so the ext3 was not the solution .

Anything changed in new version ?
I Have a setup working feeding the DB on one of my servers right now. Let's see if I manage to kill it when it grows to large. 8)

@aTan
What about CCR performance with the Dude? Is it multi threaded? Will it work well with a network of hundreds or thousands devices?
The Dude server on ROS already can use at max load up to 3 cores. Provides us with some info on that we need more supouts from bigger setups and we'll check what more can we do.
UPD: Another good feature would be vacuuming of the sqlite3 database.
I'll add this as enhancement request.

Yes the new CHR limits the traffic that DUDE trys to create doing its tasks with in turn hampers snmp and other monitoring severally.

Regards
Alexander
You can still use standard x86 ROS installation in some VM, just get free level 1 demo license level for the dude server. If should be perfect as there are no traffic limits there.

Holy crap Hell Froze over!! :D

Started browsing the forums because of a recent oddity with Dude 3.6 and discovered The Dude is being reincarnated. Cool.

I have no issue buying a router just for the Dude. What model would you suggest?

Also, with the current release is there a way to send text alerts? I cannot survive without those and currently have to use a 3rd party script with Dude 3.6 to make this happen.

I love you Mikrotik for finally caving and restarting this project. We rely on it super heavily for our network management.

A few things I would love to have fixed.
  • Export / Import / Backups

Discovery / Scanning seems to hang on subnets for long periods of time if not indefinately. Needs a timeout so it doesnt have to be restarted daily to clear stuck scanning.

Needs ability to limit SNMP walk / or blacklist certain areas like massive BGP routing tables.

Provide json / api via http so we can get status updates on cell phones without having to run full dude client. With web interface going away we lose the ability to check number of units up / down in field on cell phone.

Discovery / scanning - with 50-100 subnets the interval always seems to get reset and then they all start scanning at the same time (as many threads as you allow) which causes lots of network activity ... have a way to randomize start times on subnet scanning, or a way to keep the times randomized if you manually configure them. After a restart it seems like they all start at 0:00 again and just start scanning.
Mikrotik - Thank You! Tully I owe you a big hug (I mean beer).

For those of you who can't run it on windows anymore, just install vmware player and virtualize it ... its free and works awesome. Been doing this for years now without any problems - plus that gives you a way to backup the entire image and roll back in case things get hosed.

Wow, thanks! I increased the probe interval and immediately got some nice smooth graphs! Sometimes only a small communication is needed to resolve a problem :) Regarding 32-bit counters, well yeah, my bad then. I somehow thought it was the cause for bad RB260 probes.
These ones are already for future the dude version, at this point we want to get it back running and deal with current bugs in it.
Ok there, no rush guys. It's great even as it is and knowing it's going to become better gives even more joy :)

please make dude can monitor vrf network.
right now dude only work and monitor network on main routing-mark.
so when we configure mikrotik for mpls or vrf environment dude only works and monitor host that on main routing mark.
for example if we put dude on PE, dude cannot monitor any host/network on CPE.

thx

Thank you Mikrotik for bringing back the Dude support! It is much appreciated.

Minor bug report: Right-clicking on a Network Map and selecting "Open Separately" will open the Map for a split second, but then it is minimized and a small window pops up that just says "Error not implemented".

The Map still opens and is viewable, but that Error windows never appeared before the update.

Glad to see that the ping crash problem and smtp server authentication are already being taken care of. Thanks again!

Create a Mikrotik account - https://www.mikrotik.com/client/
Install a x86 ROS in a VM.
Run the virtual ROS and on the menu go to System, License and copy the "Software ID".
Then login to your Mikrotik and click on create a Demo Key - https://www.mikrotik.com/client/?ecom=key&demoKeyAct=1

Re: The Dude is back! v6.34rc test build released

Regards
Alexander
Oh, I'm so with you here. I run a small IT consulting company where I consult to a number of SMB clients. I am putting MikroTik MIPSBE devices in these client sites (as gateway routers as well as for their internal Wi-Fi access points) as there is no need (and no budget) for the TILE-based units. Most of these clients have the RB2011, CRS or RB950G units in place.

By removing the Windows Server and making the Dude only run on the higher-end MikroTik products, you have effectively destroyed my ability to monitor my client networks remotely. I currently have a Dude 4.0B3 Server running as a service on a Windows Server at each client site, acting as an Agent, and my office-based Dude Server (Windows) would then connect via these Agents and allow me to monitor all of my client sites. With this new release of The Dude, this whole scenario looks to be impossible - especially for smaller clients with around a dozen or fewer devices and no virtualization in place (often, not even an on-premises server). :(

I'm going to try and see if I can get a similar result from running a RouterOS x86 instance in a Hyper-V environment and running The Dude Server on that instead of the Windows Server. If this works, then that would be fine for our bigger sites (we run Hyper-V here and at our client sites, not VMWare - mostly Hyper-V on 2012 R2 Server) and we'll be able to re-deploy our The Dude setup using this method once the new version stabilizes. It won't be fine for our smaller sites - it will mean they need to now go unmonitored, which is not nice. :(

If anyone else out there in Tikland runs a similar setup, let me know and we can discuss options on/off list. I trust that I'm not the only person in this situation and that we can all move forward with MikroTik and The Dude and monitor our clients successfully (and yes, agreeing with someone else's post, I'd like to see a little more NMS rather than simple monitoring from The Dude down the track, but for now, I just want to see the functionality we had restored for SMB clients, even if we need to deploy a Router OS VM on Hyper-V to get there).

:)

Hello, here are a few observations and thoughts for Dude:

Fix request: DIsplay and monitoring of 10 GBit interfaces - interface maximum speed is limited at about 4 GBit in Dude at the moment. Please increase this limit. Also a link profile for 10 GBit links added by default.

Feature request: Update icons for devices in Dude. Maybe have the correct icon for the actual MikroTik hardware model displayed by default, as detected by probe(s).

Feature request: Add to RouterOS device icon an indicator that a software update is available to download.

On thing to consider, or maybe someone has an interesting workround for us.

We use windows server, dude probe executes a "program", which is VBScript, and gets an answer, script is running calls to webapis and getting answer for the dude.

There isn't a way around this at the moment if you host it inside RouterOS... we provides us amazing functionality, which we cant do now on newer version, I'm all for moving over, but the probes have so may limitations.

Kind Regards

Hello friends!
Updated the Mikrotik for review 6.34.rc21 on 11th December and after that I can not connect through the WinBox. It is only on the screen with the information Logging ... Use PC with Linux. It has some form of return to the previous version through command? It would be a problem with the version of WinBox have compatibility with the RC?
Anyone who can help, give thanks.

Simple Feature Request for DUDE...

Mon Dec 14, 2015 10:49 pm

Hi, thanks for developping on Dude :D :D :D . It is nearly perfect .

I have some things i would be happy to see.

- A URL field on every MAP and device - to click on and open an URL:
- A URL-Object. Just to Show with Name - and Click on to show a URL

This would be easy to implement and will help catalog all Devices.

And (NOT directly DUDE)
SNMP for CAPSMAN. At least number of online Clients.

Thanks,
Oliver Fendt

After years of tweaking 4.3, I've got it working reliably for our needs. From where I stand, it appears 6.34 isn't halfway to 4.3 yet. Have to use it on a ROS device? Not ideal, but not a deal breaker. No Web interface? Ouch! When I'm out and about, I don't carry a PC, but I do have a phone. The Web interface isn't perfect, but you can get a better picture of what's going on when you get an alarm.

So I'm not changing soon. All this is to say I was disappointed to see that 4.3 has been pulled from the download site until 6.x is ready for prime time.

My 2 cents worth.

P.S. The only thing that would peak my interest at this point, would be SNMP trap support.

guys, those of you who waited 5 years, I hope you can wait a few months longer :)
It was said multiple times that those are known drawbacks that will be fixed. We made a "ok this compiles" version and we will now start to work on it. This is just the first step.

I think what UsernameMT is asking is where can he download the old version - 4.0b3. I also would like to know that as well. I need to get a copy just in case our current server chooses to die. I am not able to replace it with the RoS 6.34 version until the web interface it back.

It was not working for many, we don't have it on the webpage anymore. There are plenty of pages that host it, you can google for it

You can make a custom label. Right click on the device and choose Appearance. In the field label, put something like this:
[Device.Name]
[Device.FirstAddress]

You can make a custom label. Right click on the device and choose Appearance. In the field label, put something like this:
[Device.Name]
[Device.FirstAddress]
You can also view all available display commands by clicking the "Insert Variable" button on the Appearance window.

To make the change effective for all devices on the Network Map, click "Settings" on the Map tools and click the Appearance tab. Any changes made to the Label will apply to all devices on the Map that do not have a custom Label.

When import my 420mb *.xml configuration, all custom snmp function not work too.
I'm also confirming that "right click - Tools - Snmpwalk" crashes dude. Nothing in routerOS's log...

OK, I have The Dude 6.34rc19 running in a CHR, both here in my office and on a test client site and I can't get the "Agent" functionality working. under 4.0B3 this worked fine (same client) whereas now I get the Agent to connect, but not work - no snmp info, no RouterOS info, nothing. No devices show connectivity as no services can be discovered.

This doesn't fill me with confidence yet. I know it is a work in the now (again) early stages of production, but this worked fine in 4.0B3.

Yeah, I'm also in no hurry to upgrade everything to new Dude. I've learned to live with the old one :) I shall watch it mature for a while and decide when I'd like to give it a go.

Thank You MikroTik, I am certainly excited that I don't need to find another product as good as The Dude. I have looked and looked and there are good products out there but nothing as intuitive or as visual as The Dude.

After reading the current status of the new Dude and how it works I am going to keep running my windows 2k3 server and wait for some updates. I have many custom probes and if those don't work in the new version that is an obvious deal breaker.

Since the client will be upgraded the transition will need to be a "cut over" for the other users. I am the admin so getting the new version running has some complications I will need two clients to get the new server up to speed. We will probably use a VM ware server with a couple CPUs 4GB of ram and 20GB of disk space (will that suffice?). We will purchase a license for RouterOS and maybe in the future move it to dedicated hardware. So finally I can give some money for The Dude even though it is hidden as a RouterOS purchase.

As for features we all have a bunch of ideas and would love them to be implemented maybe we can get a feature request post started or maybe MikroTik would give us a list of features they plan to implement (after they finish the current list). One feature I think we would all really love is to be able to use variables in a function. 64 bit counters have been mentioned but now they are becoming necessary.

This may be known or already reported -- but when running a ping to any device using the dude's ping utility in the client you almost immediately get disconnected from the dude and have to reconnect.

I'm trying to import from 4.0beta3:
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Th ... nToNewDude

http://joxi.ru/p27LQ67HxQ9zA7
error:
[admin@MikroTik] > /dude import-db file=backup-2015.12.17.tgz
action timed out - try again, if error continues contact MikroTik support and send a supout file (13)
[admin@MikroTik] > /dude import-db file=backup-2015.12.17.tgz
action timed out - try again, if error continues contact MikroTik support and send a supout file (13)
and, after an unsuccessful import:
http://joxi.ru/82Q76p5CdPbRrd
("winbox" - working)

what am I doing wrong?

PS: I reinstalled again "dude-6.34rc21.npk" - "The DudeClient" - good connect, but after run /dude import-db file=backup-2015.12.17.tgz (the same error) - again, not connected.

hAP lite and such devices are not powerful enough to run a Dude server
previously available for mipsbe, mipsle, ppc and x86
Previously the NPK did not work at all, so we actually removed them from the webpage. That was 5 years ago. Now the server is different.

on my case..
i am still using RouterOS v5.26 with dude-3.6-mipsbe.npk on my RB433AH since couple years ago with no problem.
on the other hand, i am still have RB1100AHx2 with 512MB nand storage.
so i do not think there is a problem for mikrotik to release mipsbe and ppc release again.

Comparing 3.6 and 6.x is not correct. They have different features and requirements.

hAP lite and such devices are not powerful enough to run a Dude server
hAP running smips, not mipsbe or mipsle or ppc
i did not ask you for smips version as i do not have hAP unit
Comparing 3.6 and 6.x is not correct. They have different features and requirements.
well.. you said that the dude on 6.34 is the resume job from the last version; it was v4.0beta2, isn't ?
and v4.0beta2 is the next version after v3.6.
than, the conclusion is v3.6 will has no big different to 6.34. just the big different of two numbers 3.6 and 6.34
just you make the different of requirements.

we does not understand you reason for not make the dude release for mipsbe or ppc.
we believe that many of mikrotik users still have the mipsbe and ppc units with big space of nand.

C'mon guys, stop complaining about not developing Dude for all existing platforms! Be a little more greatfull that this briliant and most of all FREE tool is back. I know that is is not hard to install somekind of free virtualization tool, install mikrotik and use free license, and finally install dude for x86. Maybe one day Mtk guys will eventually develop linux, unix, xenix, whatever variant of server, but for now I suggest to stop bullying developers and let them do their job. I believe that very soon Dude will be back on top of the throne of monitoring tools!

hi blue,

we are thinking of the resource need to run dude 24/30 per month.
if you run x86, than how much you have to spend for 30 day x 24 hours x 300 watts power supply just for dude ?
compare to the same duration for 12 watts power adaptor to fire up the mipsbe RB. this is a big different for your electricity bill every months.

we better pay the additional license for the dude (mipsbe and ppc) rather than pay an expensive electrical bill every months.

also.. when you put dude on rural area where no commercial power from government and you have put the solar panel farm, how much the additional solar panels you have to put just for x86 dude server ? this will be a big different if the platform for mipsbe and ppc still available.

and.. not only me who was asking the same, there are some others

by Neilson » Fri Dec 04, 2015 11:43 pm
Please consider adding ARM, PPC, and MIPSBE into the supported architectures for Dude ROS Package.
by jarda » Sat Dec 05, 2015 5:44 am
I would like to see arm, ppc and mipsbe dude packages also. And windows server back again.
AFAIR, on almost on every MUM, MikroTik ask us to tell them what we need so they will deploy it. So, is it wrong if I am asking to recreate The Dude for mipsbe and ppc arch ? and as ask my Neilson and jarda, arm arch as well ?

The SHA1 hash for the original dude-install-4.0beta3.exe binary is D936B1D2CA7C537F9F65FEF619CA147B0E3CB525

So you can compare any other mirrors you find that the binary is not tampered with.

I completely agree with you btw.

When i tryed to import the dude .xml file from a previous 3.6 installation i received the same error other users are reporting here.

[admin@DUDE_x86] > /dude import-db file=/dude_backup_21122015.xml
action timed out - try again, if error continues contact a supout file (13)

[admin@DUDE_x86] >

So i rebooted the routeros and try it again, then i receive the same error message. When i tryed to connect to the new server, for my suprise it loaded correctly, but i´m receiveing errors in all my custom probes that were previously working on 3.6.

Hi, you helped me a lot with Dude, and i am thrill that you continue devlopment. Keep good work for all of us :)
For the first time just one small sugestion which can be very helpfull ( i hope)
Can you put option to choose long or short interface string in links between devices during autodiscovery.
For example GigabitEthernet1/0/43 can be Gi1/0/43. In large maps that can help a lot.
Keep good work for all of us :)

Please don't forget about 64bit counters.

First off let me say that anybody with a negative post towards Mikrotik and the Dude can go to the UBNT forum and take their tickle tortures and pillow fights with them. What is so hard to understand about:
This will be a base on which we will start building The Dude for the future.
Show some support and offer ideas or just leave a positive comment, because anything else just makes you sound like one of my kids trying to scream their way into a conversation among adults.

I'm gonna use quotes from the Dude Master Lebowski who has been a huge help for many with the Dude
Thank You MikroTik, I am certainly excited that I don't need to find another product as good as The Dude. I have looked and looked and there are good products out there but nothing as intuitive or as visual as The Dude.
I completely agree. I started 1 topic and replied to that topic 1 time in past 8 years, and it was in Dude forum. This is at the top of best announcements from Mikrotik. I may post again tomorrow just too make sure I'm not dreaming. And many more times to support its growth. Mikrotik probably won't notice, but it's the best thing I could think of to show some appreciation. Other than give them a couple grand for a nice ccrDUDE solution that works right out of the box with a HDMI port for billboard sized LIVE NETWORK MAPS. I will pay in full now if that helps.

The Dude was the last major area that needed improvement for us as an all Mikrotik WISP for the last 14 yrs. We aren't that large like many on the forum. And many of Mikrotik's products, including ROS capabilities don't apply to us. But the Dude is something that is needed for networks big or small. We have tried many programs over the years, but keep using the Dude even with its drawbacks.
After reading the current status of the new Dude and how it works I am going to keep running my windows 2k3 server and wait for some updates.
Now that makes sense. (Just a small pillow fight with negative posters)

As for features we all have a bunch of ideas and would love them to be implemented maybe we can get a feature request post started or maybe MikroTik would give us a list of features they plan to implement (after they finish the current list).
Haven't looked for feature post yet but a few of mine are:

- Reliability. Starting a Dude configuration from scratch can be quite time consuming. And when the best advise for recovery is to start all over, it's quite depressing to say the least.
- Make ROS changes to all devices in a group.
- Live network maps able to view on any size screen, projector, tv....... (Improve current maps)
- Accurate and detailed graphing (Improve on current graphs)
- List views of everything possible.
- More graphical tools on map for creating coverages of towers and backhaul directions to avoid self interference when making changes.
- One of those pretty speedtest.net looking bandwidth testers for customers.
- A paid version for us busy(lazy) folks. I don't mind learning a new system, but time is money and would rather pay for a refined user friendly system specifically designed for all Mikrotik WISP.

And I like the idea of a open platform type Dude compatible with every device on earth, but hopefully Mikrotik will develop a better Dude for Mikrotik devices first and then be nice enough to worry about the rest.

I follow your opinion. Just want to say thanks to all people involved in developing this awesome tool. Thank you guys!

Removed features:
* Windows server
Is this just temporary or is the Windows server absolutely gone for good?

If you are going to work on putting the "Dude" on any standalone server, I would rather you put the effort into doing it on a "Linux" server !

Hi I've been using the new dude installed in a CCR and we see that the "ping" in any of the devices entered the program restarts.

Can I just say. About freaking time.

I hope you also lift up your communication with your customers and present us all with a roadmap. The dude is an incredible tool and if you implement half the serious requests and fix half the bugs you'll be unstoppable.

Hi,
I have problem that I cannot import old backup

MikroTik RouterOS 6.34rc30 (c) 1999-2015 http://www.mikrotik.com/
[admin@xx-core] > dude
[admin@xx-core] /dude> print
enabled: yes
data-directory: disk1/dude
[admin@xx-core] /dude> import-db file=disk1/backup-2015.12.29-2.tgz
action timed out - try again, if error continues contact MikroTik support and send
a supout file (13)
[admin@xx-core] /dude> print

action timed out - try again, if error continues contact MikroTik support and send a supout file (13)
[admin@xx-core] /dude>

I put a microSDHC and formated it in ext3 and moved it to sdcard (disk1). It is a CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+

Anyone had similar problem?

@dorijan

How large is that backup file which you want to import? It might take a while to import larger backups and it will throw out that timeout error but system will continue the process anyhow. Try connecting to server after a while, if connection is refused then try either turning off/on dude server or rebooting the the ROS host.

If none of the suggestions help then generate supout file after repeated failed import attempt and send it to support@mikrotik.com and we'll check what might be the reason for import to fail.

Thank you, it worked, backup file was 39 mb, maybe you should say something like processing in progress instead of this nasty error message :)

We do plan to add some progress/error indicator for db import/export process, so that will come in the future.

Changes in v6.34rc32 build:

* Fixed bandwidth test tool graphs.
* Ping tool client crash fixed.
* SNMPwalk tool client crash fixed.
* Spectral scan tool client crash fixed.
* In Admins > Group policies *web removed, no longer relevant.
* In Log configuration window sliders fixed.
* Right click "Open separately" fixed.
* Export to CSV client crash fixed.
* Fixed mastering type ROS for link label

* XML backup import fixed.
* Large DB export fixed.

ps, It might take a while to export large DB files. I did test with 4.5GB db and it
did take about 5-10min to create backup file on x86 VM.

GOod morning...

I'm still struggling why the decision was made to abandon the windows server? RouterOS is a router; a router is not a monitoring system. ANd vice-versa a monitoring system is not a router.

So whats the real reason?

Thanks leon

From my opinion is much better in this way, you can manage it more easy, less resources needed and no license for an windows server needed :)
You can use the Cloud Hosted Router image or you can setup your own RouterOS virtual machine with a custom install, create an MikroTik account, request a level 1 (Demo) key for free and that it!
Plus is much easy to update it, and when you connected to the server with the client, that one will request to be updated automatically to the new version :D

Previously you had a choice. If you wanted Dude hosted on RouterOS (i.e. the same thing you're praising now), it was possible (not counting the time when it was broken for 6.x, that was a bug). And if you happened to already have Windows machine and just wanted to add Dude as simple service (as opposed to - in a way - more complicated setup with VM), it was possible too. Now you lost half of the options, not exactly what I would call "much better". ;)

I'm still hoping it will come later, when the bugs get fixed, new features added, and everything stabilized.

Your app has a couple of good reviews and a 2.3 rating, but according to your Google Play information this app was last updated in June, so does it work with this new version of The Dude or are you just plugging your product? Doesn't appear to be a way for us to even find out ourselves without signing up for a subscription with credit card and then cancelling it.

FYI

If any one wants to try a third party android client: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... dude&hl=en

That is a 3rd party app. MikroTik has no control over that app and probably does not support it.

That is correct. I was also thinking of deleting the post as it has no relevance to new dude builds cause web interface from which it pulled info is no longer there. Although it might still be useful to those that use v3.6 or v4.0b3 servers.

As the Dude is a free tool, why not release it under an open source license. The tool has a lot of potential but is extremely limited as far as development transparency goes. It runs on a linux based router but won't run on linux itself? Seems like this has a ton of other use cases. Stick it under a non-commercial license so others can't take it and sell it and let us work on it and extend it.

Mikrotik is trying to monetize their effort invested in development. Combining the dude with ros is the way how to rise number of ros installations and get some additional money for licenses and/or rising the ccr selling using actual internal resources for code maintenance. Quite effective and not so much harmful to users. Anyway it is too early to say some judgement as it seems that mikrotik is still searching the way of life for Dude. It will take year or more till those who really use 3.6 or 4b3 will be confident it worths to move forward with dude.

Just my opinions.

It's due to problem that RB260 has weak processor, in most cases it will have problems with snmp.

Go to the MikroTik Downloads page, select "Release candidate (6.34rc39)" in the version selection dropbox, then click to expand either "tile" or "x86" section. You will find the links to download both "The Dude server" and "The Dude client" there.

Hello Andriys! Okay thanks a lot. Got it and downloaded.

I have run downloaded Dude client on Windows XP and tried to connect my RB2011Ui RB, but its not getting connected. Where is the problem? Do i need to have upload Dude server .npk file to connected RouterBoard? Any further help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Changes in builds from v6.34rc34 to v6.34rc41:

* Scan tool - removed for now till it's reworked.
* Telnet tool - dude will throw out error if telnet client is not available on system where
dude client is installed.
* Dude tool - Corrected dude.exe launch path. Now the client will look for executable
in it's installation dir and not by some full path.
* Added 10G link type - Will be added by default only for new installations.
* Torch tool - fixed.

* ROS upgrade function fixed.
ps. Known issue CHR VMs are not yet upgrade-able from dude.

* SMTP authentication and tls options added!

Build will most likely be uploaded just tomorrow morning, as there were issues with build upload to download server.

Hello!

I have the same problem related by others.

When adding links, no interface is shown (unknown). dude-install-6.34rc41 still doesn't solve this.

For Mikrotik: could you please release a new rc version with this fixed.

For everybody with the same problem: When was the last post V6 release that had this working? Could you provide me a link for that software (routerOS and The Dude client), as a workaround?

ps.: Currently I monitor via snmp around 300 Cisco switches and routers. The most important issue is the link not showing TX, RX bitrate.

Just installed 6.34rc41 and tried to import my DB (around 600mb) and I'm getting the same time out error as everyone else. I've also fixed settings that were broken and after X amount of minutes, it's reverting to the state when I first logged in. I'm not sure if it's crashing and not saving changes or what is going on... Just a heads up.

Also, not able to connect via hostname. Says it can't resolve even though I know it's valid.

Thanks for bringing the Dude back!

I tried it using Win10/Virtualbox. I think I had an issue with the Virtualbox as routerOS itself was also losing settings, so I switched and am currently running on a CCR1016. I'm still receiving timeouts trying to import the db. After waiting a while, if I try /dude print I'm also getting a timeout error on that as well.

I am able to access now, but have the problem with all my interfaces showing unknown until I clicked reconnect on the router itself. If I go under devices - routerOS, highlight all and click reconnect, it fails. If I go onto the map, double click the device and hit reconnect, it connects...

i have that problem too. but i have a crazy solution.
if you have problems to import db:
1.- on the dude server /dude set enable=no
2.- /dude import-db file=******* if you recive a error, do nothing, just stay a few minute, 10 or 15minute because the import of db still continue.
3.- /dude set enable=yes
if you have problems to save:
1.- /dude set enable=no
2.-/dude export-db file=********* if you recive a error, do nothing, just stay a few minute, 10 or 15minute because the export of db still continue and this force to save the change.
3.-reboot dude server.
4.-/dude set enable=yes

For now in dude 4beta3 if device with status down is acked, when it goes up and after some time goes down it will be in acked devices.
May be if device goes down, it is acked and it go up and after some time it go down it must be with status down?

ok. so that means that i need to buy a x86 licence in order to use the new dude ?
I only have grooves, 750gl's, omnitiks ... i dont have any CHR or CCR or X86
can i use any licence from my other gear to install a x86 in a VM ?

If 1mbit/s will be enough for your dude probes, than you can use CHR to run new dude for free.

@Chupaka

For now I put changes here. At some point they will be included in changelog.

@ste

For some reason dude related packages was not uploaded correctly. It should be corrected soon. If not I'll put separate download link for them here.

Vacuum! I am happy of that. Thank you very much for it. I will test as soon as I manage to have running both clients of 4b3 and 6rc on one windows station simultaneously.

Regarding my complaints about Dude not creating links correctly, please disregard. The latest rc builds work fine. I haven't test the others yet.

Problem with link monitoring in cases where ROS is used as mastering type is know to us. Dev has bug report for it. hopefully it will get fixed soon.
Any update on this? I can force them to reconnect to ROS in Dude, but they disconnect some time after again.

I used this link:
http://download2.mikrotik.com/routeros/ ... 34rc45.npk

After install, dude server took about 1/2 hour to start.

From all the 6.34rc releases, I noticed that dude has difficulties connecting to objects that have Secure Mode checked.

I can confirm that unselecting Secure Mode fixed the ROS connection issues for me for now.

Yeah, I mistook this issue for the Secure ROS connections issue. With Secure ROS checked, devices disconnect from Dude and don't show links correctly. Turn off Secure and its fine.

Had an issue with settings not saving, only to realize the flash drive was full. Fixed.

Having lots of crashing issues now. Dude will crash and not start up until I get on the router and do a /dude pr and then it seems to start until next crash.

After two hours I restarted my dude server, it starts running.

In winbox, I enabled logging for debug, then I see these entries repeatedly in log:

12:43:47 ssh,debug,packet sending string
12:43:47 ssh,debug,packet SSH-2.0-ROSSSH\r
12:43:47 ssh,debug,packet
12:43:47 ssh,debug closing connection: <connection error> ::ffff:xx.xx.xx.xx:49546 (4)

where xx:xx:xx:xx is the IP address of my dude server.

After I disabled "secure mode" for my dude server, I still get these entries. I do have many objects in my network that still have secure mode enabled though.

Hi!
Does anyone else experience lag problems with new Dude server?
I have 1000 devices in Dude and it's very CPU intensive on CHR. One core goes up to 100% and than Dude client freezes. I'm trying it on Hyper-V VM with 4 cores and enough memory. On that config I was running Windows server with Dude and lots of services without problems.
Refreshing of devices is gone, I must manually click reconnect to get interface data.
Windows or Linux server version would be better. At least until you made Dude multi-threaded.
Another thing is usage of remote database server. Collecting and using lots of data on CCR/CHR storage isn't something I wan't to do. I want database on separate server, backup and multi RouterOS connection to it.
And API of course ;)

Lag = yes!

My dude server runs in a Celeron box with a separate HDD for the dude database. It worked well with rc3x. I noticed that the lag start with version rc41. From Tools => Graphing, my CPU graph shows much more intensity after rc41.

Also, memory usage has been all over the place.

More of a feature request, posting here for lack of a more suitable topic.

On a single device you can add more ip addresses, but the services probe the first ip and this is used to show if the service is up or down. Can we have the probes check all ip addresses and the service is considered up or down depending on a switch so we can choose - 1 ip down - service down (and), all ip down - service down (or).

When I updated from 6.34rc45 to 6.34 final after reboot Dude was not working. It was :
[admin@Dude] > dude print
         enabled: no
I had to do :
dude set enabled=yes
