Need help with network traffic problem.

Tue Feb 02, 2016 1:36 am

Hello everyone,

I have the following setup:

Suddenlink Internet 200Mbps using the Touchstone SB6183 modem connected to:
Mikrotik Cloud Core Router CCR-1009-8G-15 VIA CAT-5 running Router OS 6.33.3 connected to:
D-Link DGS-1210-28 Switch VIA CAT-5.
Everything else connected to that.
I am running a very basic config. DHCP on Etner1 Static on Ether2.
Address list named inside (192.168.0.0/24) and ip masquerading for the address list. Then a few ports forwarded.

When I connect my computer directly to the Suddenlink modem, everything works.
When I connect my computer to the router it seems that something is interrupting downloads. For example, download IE11 in Chrome will report "Network Failure" most of the time, however will sometimes work. Speedtest.net will test good and then slowly slow down towards the end of the test. Some website content won't load on the first try. I am having difficulty even describing the problem.
The problem seems to get worse when I plug into the switch.
The problem is much worse if I slave any of the other router ports to Ether2.

Does anyone understand what is going on here?
I'm sure I am doing something wrong but don't know which direction to look.

Thanks for the help,
John Clausen

Which port is the "WAN" port for your Mikrotik?

Can you post the config for ether1 and ether2 on the Mikrotik. Based on what I read, I believe ether2 is the WAN port or the port connected to your ISPs modem.

If you plug the switch into the ISPs modem and only connect your PC, what are your results? Just trying to rule the switch's performance out of the picture.

You stated you have DHCP on ether1 and static on ether2. Can you be more specific as to their roles - ties into a question from above?

I will post the config later, however ether1 is the WAN and ether2 is the LAN. With the router plugged into the modem and just my computer plugged into the router, I still have problems. I also tested a RB450G and had the same issues.

Thanks again,
John

Takeaway: There's a compatibility problem between the SB6183 and RouterOS/Mikrotik devices, and I have no clue where. Hopefully a Mikrotik and/or Arris/Motorola Surfboard engineer can help us!

Oddly enough, I've found that the config doesn't matter - even in the simplest of configurations, I still experience the same problems you describe John. This is an issue I spent several months troubleshooting with TWC and Mikrotik engineers (each one blamed the other). The Mikrotik worked fine on a dedicated 100 Mbps ISP, and the SB6183 worked fine on other routers (see notes below).

I believe it must be packet loss, but I'm not sure where - those inconsistent downloads are the worst. I used http://www.java.com/en/download/chrome.jsp and clicked on the "Agree and Start Free Download" button/link as my test site, as it failed the most reliably (though sometimes it also worked...). The issue was so inconsistent that neither TWC nor my Mikrotik guys were ever able to fully diagnose and correct the problem.

My solution: I ended up downgrading to a Motorola SB6141, and magically all my problems went away. The downside is that I only get 100/10, not the 300/20 that I'm paying for.

Perhaps there is a Mikrotik configuration fix/adjustment for this? Anyone out there who knows it, PLEASE let us all know!

In case anyone's interested, below is a description of the network problem I posted to Upwork to find some Mikrotik engineers to look at the issue. The guys I found were great, but ultimately the best solution they found was to use the Cisco 3825, as they had never seen anything like this before. I performed packet captures of the issues (namely downloading Java from the link above) on both my PC and Mikrotik interfaces, and I still have these if someone else would like to review them. I'm not very well versed in making sense of packet streams/wireshark, so these captures don't reveal too much to me.

[I've since upgraded RouterOS to the latest version, 6.34.1, and the issues below still persists].

Upwork job description:

I need some help in troubleshooting and configuring my Mikrotik RB1100AHx2 router for my network, and ensuring that it is setup properly and in the most efficient way possible. I’m running RouterOS 6.32.2, and have it configured with several different LANs. I believe I’m having chronic issues with packet loss, and potentially NAT, MTU, and/or uPNP connections. I’d like some traffic generation tests to be run (and packet captures/traffic monitors), and obviously I will provide Teamviewer/Winbox access. I would like to offer you $500 for the successful resolution of this issue. Below are the conditions I’m experiencing:

1. Certain website are (nearly) 100% inaccessible. I can’t download from Javadl.sun.com; therefore, I can’t download Java without using a VPN connection. See Links 3 & 4 below. (consistent problem, most of the time)
2. A user’s Sony PS4 is never able to update its OS over the network, and I’ll try to have their device in the lab to troubleshoot this issue. Additionally, the PS4 is never able to successfully complete a connection speed test (consistent problem).
3. Netflix requires constant reloads before initiating/establishing stream (inconsistent problem).
4. Changing video positions often crashes the session, requiring a full page refresh, and hence restarting the video over from the beginning (inconsistent problem).
5. Many websites require 2 – 5+ refreshes for the pages to load properly. Either the formatting is completely off (it’s all left-aligned with text only, as seen in Link 1 below) or images/video/components of the page don’t load (some or all, see Link 2 below). (inconsistent problem)
6. Mikrotik sometimes seems to be overloaded with the number of simultaneous connections/sessions. Complex websites that pull data/widgets from the most diverse number of sources fare the worst, and this is seen most often during heavier usage (inconsistent problem).
7. None of the problems seen above exist when a home Belkin router (a Belkin N150 model F9K1001V5 router) or a Linksys WRT54G router (running dd-wrt) are used. See Link 5 below. I would use a Belkin or Linksys long term, but can’t because these devices can’t be configured with Visp.net for hotspot authentication, and they’re also not powerful enough to pass all of the traffic that my network requires. Furthermore, they’re not nearly as configurable as the Mikrotik. Additionally, none of the problems above exist when utilizing a Cisco 3825 (commercial) router, but it too can’t be configured to utilize Visp.net.
8. The above issues may have a single or multiple root causes: I’m not sure.
9. I have tried multiple RB1100AHx2s (yes, I ordered another one), various RouterOS versions on these devices, and even running RouterOS 5.20 on an x86 desktop. The above issues are present in all cases.

Network design: Motorola SB6183 Cable modem(300/20 Mbps)  Mikrotik RB1100AHx2 → Layer 2 switches → end-users/end-user home routers. Same issues from both groups (Netflix requiring endless refreshes, video repositioning not working, web pages/sites don’t load correctly and/or need lots of refreshes; issues were worst at previous max capacity of concurrent users). Speedtest.net shows speeds in excess of 300 Mbps.
I also experience the same issues with my workstation, and I’m plugged directly into the Mikrotik on interface 3, so this rules out the switches as the cause. Furthermore, even with all other devices unplugged except the cable modem (and I’m the only one plugged into interface 3), javadl.sun.com does not allow me to download Java. See Link 6 for a diagram of the physical network layout.

Note 1: PLEASE READ THE ABOVE CONFIGURATION AND ISSUES. I’ve put a lot of time into troubleshooting this myself (off and on for over 5 weeks), and have spent time in providing the details and documentation above to help find the right person to troubleshoot this.

Note 2: Flushing the PC’s Chrome or Application Data cache is NOT the main source of the problem. I have 3 different PCs connected, all experiencing the same issues, and have tried multiple different browsers on each PC. Most of the issues I’m experiencing are INCONSISTENT, which make them harder to troubleshoot.

Note 3: I can provide out-of-band access to the Mikrotik to rebuild it from scratch if needed. This will be achieved through my Verizon 4G LTE phone connection, and configured via either Putty or Winbox. In doing so, this configuration must be applied https://visp.net/Setting-up-RouterOS-with-visp.net.

Note 4: Communication: I’d like to work with the selected freelancer via Teamviewer & Skype in resolving this issue, but may provide access when I’m not available due to time zone differences. The Teamviewer session may be recorded for further documentation/troubleshooting purposes, and connecting via Teamviewer means that you consent to the screen capture.

Note 5: You must have fairly extensive prior experience in configuring Mikrotik devices.

Note 6: You must have fairly extensive experience in using Wireshark, and analyzing packet captures and transmissions.

Hello,

did you found any solution to this?
I have a similar problem. I can access the Netflix website but i cannot stream videos.
Also I cannot get the maximum performance of my VDSL (would be 50Mbit down) but i can only get around 22-25mbit/s
With a standard router like a linksys I have no problem.

My setup (RouterOS 6.37.3):
Draytek 130 VDSL2 Modem -> Mikrotik RB3011 -> TP Link Layer 2 Switch -> Client

I'm using VLAN's. I think the problem is somewhere at the MTU but I cannot find a solution.
