Power remote tower with Solar power

Wed Nov 17, 2004 10:32 pm

I am looking to power a remote tower site with solar power, the only thing I will be running is a router board 230 with 6 radios in it. The tower is only 70 feet tall so I don't need lights or anything else.

if you are using a poe from 12-24 volts no problem. just make sure you use a failover system i have 2 systems that run on solar the one thing you
want is a lot of battery . the batts we use are around 120.00 each and you have to use 6 volt type due to the load that they take.

with six radios i would say you are going to need atleast a 500watt panel
plus atleast a 200watt for the backup battery system(if you want 24/7)

what type of weather.

SUN

Sat Nov 20, 2004 6:50 am

I should have at least 4 to 5 hours of good sun light in the winter months here in Louisiana.

first thing your going to have to due . is find out how much each radio will draw at peak usage . 100 mw radio x 6 plus the poe and router board . i am guessing but , i would figure 500watts would be your min. amount of solar power, you would need . now if you are only having 5 hours of good sun on a good day. i would up it to 1000watts make sure you run the 24volt system(solar) they are more stable. also make sure you order a auto shutoff type charging system . this is so you can use a relay to switch between your primary and backup battery system.

you will need
3 500watt solar panels about 400 each
4 l-16 deep cycle batt. main system 120 ea
4 golf cart 150 batt back up 60 ea
2 charger systems 40-100 ea.

this is the recommend system . you could save by using a wind gen . they are around 450 but will give you 400 watts of power providing you are in a windy area.

you could also using 200 watt panels which will work . but you will need an extra set of batteries on hand to swap out if the or the back fail

Would you please share the source of this equipment, especially the solar panels?

I have yet to see a wind generator that will survive high wind levels and icing on mountain top environments, but in more "normal" environments this is good option. (but then, such places usually already have reasonable power suppy)

Anyway, 500w draw seems a lot, considering the usually low power consumption of RouterBOARD and such. I have seen consumer grade motherboard with 6 Atheros interfaces and 12V power suply that consime about 30W (2-3A at 12V). One 400w wind generator and large (say, 300-400 Ah) battery bank is adequate for keeping the system powered 24x7. But of course solar panels do have benefits - although it's difficult to mount solar panels properly on towers.

you are correct on the wind gen but i have a wind gen at 3,000 feet gets extremly windy around 70 mph average is around 50. on a 20foot pole .
works great . and they have auto release clutch assem. now on most .they also have heating elements for the icy condition

though you statement about the radios is close . you also have to figure under normal use to double your out put .

meaning each radio runs at lets say .5amp draw x6 plus motherboard 1.5

you are looking at atleast a 4-6 amp draw all the time depending on how much traffic each radio moves . 400watts would cover it proving a wind gen was producing atleast 200watt at 30mph wind . which is what most gen start at . wind gen we use is a windspher 150 and it starts moving at
7-9 mph (about 50watts) and does hit it peak til around 35 mph (350)
i would still recommend 24volt . this is what i was told by our solar engineer

our problem and the reason for both solar and wind is wind is great provinding it is blowing. same goes for sun light is great unless in is over
cast.
