Still need help with this?

I have a MikroTik RB951G-2HnD RouterOS version 6.12 working with a Pantech (Verizon) UML295 4g LTE connected to the USB port of the RB951.

ActiveCentury, I'd like to pick your brain on the UML295 please. I have two of them. I can get them to connect and they stay connected as long as I'm not trying to pass any data through the interface... As soon as I do, the modem drops and reconnects... I've tried MTU tweaks and all.. stuck at this point..

The UML 295 must be set to auto connect first on a pc or a laptop.

I've tried a hundred ways, the UML295 doesn't work. I have mine working flawlessly on two flavors of linux, a different router, windows and MacOS. But mine never worked right with ROS, same issues you are having. Looks like it is working perfect, till it has to pass any real traffic then it dies.

Anything low bandwidth like pings and traces seem to work a majority of the time, but I think it is a lack of horsepower in the CPU to handle 4G over USB in the mid-high to low range ROS devices. I've tested the UML295 on a 951G, RB2011U, and SXT 2. Looks like it will work right up to the point where you need to use it and it dies.

The only way I got a 4G through Verizon link on a MikroTik was to use a wifi jetpack with an external cellular antenna and then CPE mode on another ROS device all tucked in a metal box.

This is an old thread but since I just got a Pantech UML295 working on Verizon with an RB951G running 6.33.3:

First thing to know is that these are not like the USB 3G dongles of old -- they look to the attached computer/router like an Ethernet device conceptually rather than a serial port with PPP. The USB stick makes its own little NAT'ed network with DHCP server et al, just like a Hotspot/MiFi device would do, but the "network" exists only virtually between the USB host and the stick. Once you know this, everything becomes much clearer. The modem even has a web UI very similar to the MiFi devices.

So...here's all I had to do:

1. Configure the modem to "auto connect" mode. Mine was already configured this way but if not, you need to plug it into a laptop and change the config. RouterOS has no way to make it connect, afaik.

2. Insert a Verizon LTE SIM valid for "broadband" service. I used a SIM from a MiFi I already had, or you can get a SIM from Verizon, or pay their $$$ price for a modem device with SIM.

3. Plug the modem into the router, power on.

4. The router will recognize the modem. It will show up in the "lte" section in the Interfaces view in Winbox.

5. Configure a DHCP client on the lte interface. The router will be assigned an ip in the 192.168.32.x subnet with 192.168.32.2 as its gateway.

6. IPv4 traffic can now flow to Verizon. Note that unless you pay $500 for a "public" IP there is no way to get incoming traffic terminated directly. You will need to tunnel via PPTP or possibly IPSec/NAT-T to somewhere with unrestricted IP access to achieve inbound connectivity.

Note that there may be two NAT stages -- the modem reports its "public" IP address but that address is not the one you see when you make connections to the public 'net.

I did not see any of the reliability issues under load reported earlier in this thread. Possibly this is due to luck, or improved firmware, or use of the RB951 with better USB power supply design. I've seen a range of odd behavior with Raspberry Pi boards that turned out to be due to flaky USB power circuitry, very similar to the symptoms reported above.

Although the modem reports having an IPv6 address in its UI, I was not able to get any IPv6 functionality working with MT.

I was able to perform RouterOS bandwidth tests using TCP with another MT router in our data center, however I could not get a UDP bandwidth test to work, so possibly Verizon and/or the modem does not NAT UDP properly.

This page has some handy information on undocumented pages in the modem web UI:

Followup with some information on the older Pantech UML 290 with Mikrotik:

I ordered both the 290 and 250, based on some forum posts that said the 290 was "better" in some way. The 295 arrived first so I configured and deployed it (see above). So, the 290 then arrived but I had to wait on a new SIM from Verizon and a new 951 router to try it out. Executive summary : I wasn't able to get it to work. Important to know: the 290 has the old-style serial-over-usb/ppp interface and although there are various articles and posts showing how to set it up with Mikrotik/RouterOS ppp, I wasn't able to get it to make a successful connection. The UML290 does also have a "LAN Mode" (like the 295's sole mode of operation, I assume). I was able to configure this mode in the 290 when attached to a Windows 10 laptop, and successfully connect to Verizon. However, upon plugging the modem back into the Router, it did not appear as a LAN device. Since the 295 modems are readily available for a reasonable price on Amazon, I bailed at this point on the 290 and ordered a second 295. Hope this helps future generations of folks who are interested in connecting to Verizon LTE.

I just got my Pantech UML 295 and followed these directions and was not able to even see the LTE under interfaces but I can see it under resources under system > resources > USB

Any recommendations on what I can try?

Yes. Install the modem in a Windows machine, with the Verizon software. Use that setup to update the firmware and make sure it is configured in "LAN" mode (the 295 supports the older PPP mode but it needs to be in LAN mode to work with ROS). Also set it to "auto connect", and check that it successfully connects the PC to the Internet. If it works in a Windows 10 PC, it should be good to go for ROS because Windows 10 doesn't support the PPP operation mode either.

Was able to get this working... All I needed to do was a hard reboot of the mikrotik before it actually shows up as an interface.

Got this to work... Hard reboot was the fix and then the usb device shows up as an interface.

I may be able to shed some light on this because I found the exact same thing with my UML295 : everything works until you try to pass traffic, then it disconnects from the Verizon network (and re-connects, rinse/repeat).

At first I suspected poor power supply but after eliminating that as a cause I realized that the disconnecting had not been happening in my earlier testing that was performed with only one client generating test traffic.

On a whim that the problem could have something to do with the nature of the traffic rather than the amount of traffic, I enabled tunneling on the connection. So instead of regular IP packets for the traffic (I had a few PCs, tablets, phones etc on the network that would all have opened various TCP connections to various services), Verizon and the Pantech was only seeing encrypted GRE packets. Bingo! It works perfectly -- connected for hours and hours.

Therefore I conclude that either by design (to thwart use as a "whole network" connectivity option), or through bugs in the 295 firmware (connection tracking is broken perhaps??), this device does not like to carry a diverse traffic load. Hiding the traffic inside tunnel packets works around the problem.

Note that I had already tried NAT'ing the traffic on the MT router (hence the modem only saw traffic originating from one source IP) -- that did not solve the problem. Hence the conclusion that it is reacting to # connections rather than # client IP addresses.

Do you get a public facing, routable IP with this or is it double NAT?

With the technique I'm using (tunnel all traffic to a router on the Internet), I get a public routable IP obviously.

If you pass your traffic through without NAT to the UML 295 I believe you'd have one NAT stage but I'm not 100% sure.
If you NAT first on your router then you'd have at least double-NAT.

There is no known way to get a public routable IP address from Verizon directly without paying them $500.

The UML 295 supports IPv6 (which possibly would give you a direct routable address) but so far it can't be made to work with Mikrotik because RouterOS lacks support for Client DHCP6 and the Pantech does not support stateless autoconfig.

Re: Verizon UML 295 support

Tue Oct 04, 2016 7:41 pm

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I've had no luck getting RouterOS version 6.38rc7 to recognize my Pantech UML295 USB modem as an LTE interface device.

According the RouterOS release notes, starting with version 6.37 this USB modem is supposed to be officially supported. Here's the relevant excerpt:

*) lte - added Pantech UML295, Vodafone K4201-Z, ZTE MF823/MF831 support;

I carefully followed all of the steps mentioned earlier in this thread about connecting UML295 to a Windows computer, making sure it's properly configured by using the built-in web console, and insuring the latest modem firmware is installed.

Here's what's happening:

With the UML295 connected to the USB port on my new hAP ac lite (RB952), the modem powers on normally and displays a green LED indicating it's connected to Verizon's cellular network. It always shows up under the RouterOS's "System->Resources->USB" list but never under "Interfaces" list so I can't set up a DHCP Client for it.

I've tried every combination of startup sequence I can think of to see if that might make a difference:

1. First powering off the hAP ac lite, connecting the USB modem, then powering up hAP ac lite
2. Rebooting the hAP ac lite with the USB modem connected
3. Waiting to insert the USB modem after the hAP ac lite is booted up

Nothing changes... the USB modem never shows up as an LTE interface.

I've also tried using a USB split-power cable to provided more current to the UML295 (up to 2A) just to be sure low power isn't a factor. No difference there either.

I've emailed MikroTik tech support and included a supout.rif file, and so far I've been told the UML295 is only a PPP device, not LTE. Clearly that's a mistake as their own release notes and the experiences of others previously in this thread suggest otherwise.

Can anyone offer any other experiments I might try to get this USB modem working properly with RouterOS?

Thanks in advance,

John

Curiously, although officially supported in 6.37 my experience has been that the Pantech UML295 does not work at all (and is not recognized by ROS as an LTE device) after 6.35.4

I have (had) two routers with these modems working just fine but they don't work at all if I run any 6.36.x or 6.37.x ROS release.

I've reported this to MT via support@

I was thinking to try 6.38 but your report suggests that won't work either.

Thanks for your post.

My experience mirrors yours...

So far I've been working with support concerning this problem for about a week. They've had me try various more recent versions of ROS, all to no avail. But then just a couple of days ago they asked me to try downgrading to ROS 6.35.4... maybe based on your submission... and suddenly the UML295 worked perfectly!

Under 6.35.4 the UML295 immediately shows up in the LTE interface list so I was able to apply a DHCP client against it. After some brief functionality, speed testing, and generating a new supout file, I upgraded back to ROS 6.37.1 and as before the UML295 wouldn't show up as an LTE interface. Hopefully MikroTik can figure out what happened between ROS 6.35.4 and newer so they can quick;y come up with a fix.

For some odd reason my RB952 hAP ac lite lost the 5GHz WiFi when I downgraded it to ROS 6.35.4. I didn't want to screw around with trying to get that to work and possibly risk messing up my overall configuration, so I didn't want to stay at ROS 6.35.4 long.

Best regards,

John

I've also tried the 6.38rc14 and had the same experience. I ended up downgrading to 6.35.4 and all is well. I have a UML295 with a static ip and haven't figured out how to access the mAP2nD from the outside. This is to be a remote installation where access to the internal network in necessary. Any ideas out there other than setting up a tunnel? I sure appreciate this forum, it's been a life saver on many occasions.

For anyone who happens upon this old thread...

I'm happy to report that as of RouterOS v6.38, the Pantech UML295 is now fully supported as an LTE device.

I have one working perfectly in the USB port of my hAP ac Lite with Verizon as the carrier.

Are we able to use IP pass through with UML295 or is it working only in a double NAT scenario?
