Shaping 300/50 Traffic

Tue Nov 08, 2016 6:26 pm

Hi Everyone,

I am looking to buy an appropriate Mikrotik router for a 300/50 connection for which I am looking to do traffic shaping. I am thinking something in the 3011 or 1100ahx2 range should be sufficient. I am hoping to get by with a 3011, but am looking for your advice. I have experience with queues and queue trees from back in the 450g days, but have been using other routers since. What I am looking to do is shape and prioritize traffic for a connection of 300/50.

Would a 3011 be sufficient for this, or should I be looking for something a little more powerful?

Thank you.

Thank you for your answer. Do you think the cpu would keep up when adding QOS? Can you try adding a queue limiting at 300mbps on the download and see if it is still able to keep up?

My company currently uses RB3011 devices as BRAS for wireless users and we are happy with it's performance. I've made you one screenshot as an example: box has 100 PPPoE users with simple queue each (speed up to 10Mbps per user), additional QoS atop all those simple queues (less than 10 queue tree rules), 30 VLANs, dozen of firewall rules, 10 mangle rules, NAT with internal proxy rules...

You can see that around 15k (+9k upstream) pps and 150Mbps CPU of the box is dancing at around 50%. You can use this info as a base for comparition to your idea of your network setup and decide if you need more performance.
