Could somebody please confirm that the MikroTik 48POW 48V power supply will work with the RB960PGS? If not, suggested alternative? I would prefer a power brick over a PoE injector.

I was hoping that the 48V power supply from my Netgear PoE switches would work. But the barrel connector is just bit to big. Since the MT 48POW only says it fits RB800, I wanted to check first.

If anybody is wondering why I ask .... Per the data sheet, "RB960PGS can power 802.3af/at devices if 48V DC input is used (unit comes with 24v power supply,
so you would have to purchase 48v power supply separately to support this). Uh, I did confirm this.

I've just tested the device and it needs a 48V power supply to power 802.3af/at devices. I've used a generic 48v 2A power supply. Also you can power it from a 802.3at switch. When powering 802.3af/at devices I've noticed a long delay before powering them on (between 5 and 15 seconds)

Now for some valued customer feedback to MikroTik: Why on earth would you not ship the product with a power supply that supports the 802.3at capability? I have purchased various other PoE switches and they always come with a power supply adequate to support the advertised PoE specification. But, the RB960PGS comes with a 24v that can only do passive PoE. This product marketing decision does not make any sense. For overall customer satisfaction, just ship with a 48v and not make the customer have to go out and buy one. Thx.

It looks like that is what is happening, more and more new products do 802.3af/at instead of passive PoE.
My guess is that when using 48V power supply you cannot get 24V passive PoE on this device, that would
be the reason to ship with a 24V supply (or else you would destroy most passive PoE devices).

You are correct. I just tried it. With the 24V, passive PoE works. With the 48V, passive no longer works.

That is great! I hope it is the same for all manufacturers...
However, I think it is a very welcome development that there appears to be a shift from passive PoE to 802.3af/at.
It is well protected and it is easier to get a suitable switch with PoE out from lots of different manufacturers, so when
we require a switch with a certain number of ports and specific form factor, powering, etc we are much more likely
to find one.

My only concern with 802.3af/at is the small amount of power that is available... Should be fine for some smaller Mikrotik's biut bigger units with 3 or 4 radio cards... Is the port not perhaps going to run out of juice?

I do concur though, 802.3af/at is definitely the way to go and a step in the right direction as a standard.
