Looking to build a home/small business network

Mon Dec 26, 2016 1:52 am

So I would like to get my network up and running.
I just got fiber installed to my house.
So I was wondering if someone on this forum could help me choosing hardware and software :)
My house is a basement and a living floor. about 95m2 each. I got the fiber to my boiler room in the basement and was thinking of putting a server there as well.
Now I have to set up the network at the house.
I have RJ45 cat6 installed to many of the rooms and a lot of the rooms got two cables from the basement.
I think I will have static IP, 100/100Mbit with my ISP.

So what functionality I want is:
To have a file server for my lan
To host my own webpage.
To access some files from outside my home (ftp or vpn server?)
To have a Router for traffic to the internet from my lan.

Network functionality:
To connect all together with speed (gigabit cat 6 cables).
To have a good strong wifi. The house has a cellar which should have a ok signal too.
(I think it could be cool with duplex but don't know if it is valuable with only a few devices, I have 2 nic mpci cards laying around.)
So now I was thinking how do I solve this the best way with the least money :)

What I have:
My workstation,
and an old PC with an
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (dual core, 64bit, 2.6MHz, passmark 1314)
2GB RAM
MB Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product ... id=2579#sp
Only one Gigabit ethernet jack (Realtek RTL8110 Gigabit Ethernet)

Suggestions?

Thanks for the help :)

Depending on your basement construction (are there concrete walls?) you could use a Hap AC as router and basement AP; for the rest of stories I'd start with a pair of wAP ac's, I'd first place one, test coverage, then place the second one so that you get maximum coverage.

You don't mention how many ethernet devices you need to connect. If Hap AC doesn't provide enough port count, then I would consider a RB3100 for routing and AP management (CAPsMAN), and either another wAP ac o Hap AC for the basement, the benefit here is you will have more freedom to position it around the basement.

why not a MikroTik RouterBoard CRS109-8G-1S-2HnD-IN
can't it manage duplex on the wifi side?
Then I could have the gigabit network on my ethernet connected devices.
Is the wifi not as good as the Hap AC or is the router and firewall capabilities not as good?
About my layout. Now I have a router with dsl connection that is centrally placed on the top floor. since the floors are of wood the signal can pass down to the basement with decent strength even if the walls are made of hollow concrete blocks.

About the network. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Is it not normal to have a DMZ for the webserver (my web page) and a more secure zone for my home network?
I was thinking of having a vpn server on my home network to be able to connect to my computers from the outside.
Is this possible to make with one server and one router/switch?

CRS are great switches, though when you run them as routers you will find that they typically cannot handle faster internet speeds. What will be your up/down speeds from your ISP? CCR will be a better choice if your expected speeds are greater than 200/200Mbps.

You can put a webserver in a DMZ. Typically this is done when the webserver itself has an assigned Public IP address. If the webserver is going to have a private IP you can still choose to use a DMZ or simple FW/NAT rules to allow access. There are pros and cons for either choice and you'd want to weigh them to determine which is best for your application.

VPNs can be setup for remote access. I'm not sure what the second part of the question is trying to ask.

Haha... yes I can see your point.
"Is this possible to make with one server and one router/switch?"
should be "Is it possible to do this with one server and one router/switch?"
I was thinking that I could run multiple VM:s on the server one for webserver and one for file server perhaps and use one nic on the computer.
I think I will have 100/100 from my ISP.
What are the pro and con with RouterBoard CRS109-8G-1S-2HnD-IN vs Hap AC
I don't need PoE nor any compatibility with optical fiber. could it be used as a NAS since it has usb?

You might be able to reach 100/100 by routing /natting over the CRS109 or CRS125 in case you use fasttrack. But in this case you loose the queuing functions for example. So it is a kind of tradeoff. With ccr you can use all the features with huge reserve in performance for future connectivity expansion. But if you don't have enough money for now and the line doesn't need to be permanently used at 100%, you can start with CRS for now and see during the time if you need more powerful router in addition to it or not.

Following up with what jarda typed; I recommend that you step up to a CCR. It will give you better performance when it comes to routing, VPN, FW, etc... It will also meet future growth needs without having to upgrade your hardware.

The more features you slowly add over time will take a hit, the CCR will take the punches and keep purring along; the CRS will quickly bog down.

Yes the price of the cloud core routers is a little steep.
Why I was thinking of mikrotik is because I like to have bang for buck and a stability and problem free system ones it is set up.
I would like the budget to be about 200 EUR or 240 Dollar.
It would be nice if the price where about 150 EUR.
Perhaps there is an other brand you could suggest?
Or a good specific SOHO router?
I have no problem buying second hand if it would be an option.

What about 3011 as router and hap lite for wifi?

The 3011 sounds like a good option, but why use a two controller chip setup?
Is there some pro/con with the two controller chip setup?
Is there a way to connect the whole 10 gigabit connections to one network and maintain good through output (bridge the two controllers internally)?
I was looking for a AP device that have a brodcasting wifi card and a wifi receiver card to get duplex on the AP.
I think it is called dual nstream, correct me if I'm wrong.
Is this possible with all hap lite.
Also which one is a good option to use to get reception through brick walls?
