some questing about hAP ac lite (RB952Ui-5ac2nD)

Mon Mar 27, 2017 10:42 pm

Hi, helpers,

We are planning to use 150 hAP ac lite(RB952Ui-5ac2nD) to cover a 300 hotel rooms with CAPsMAN. There are existing ethernet cables inside the rooms at the sidewall where the TV set is, and we place a hAP ac lite for each two rooms, the replace the switch with PoE switch to provide power. Here come few questions.

1) In the hAP ac lite spec. sheet from routerboard.com website, only says [PoE in : Yes], but didn't give out standard like other products listed 802.3af/at. So what kinda power source does hAP ac lite require, can anyone give me a clear answer?

2) Searched the forum, I noticed few posts mentioned about hAP ac lite has problem with Apple device. does this happen a lot or this just an uncommon case? In my setup, the traffic won't be heavy, one AP only serve 2 rooms, and It's an old building, signal won't leak to the other side of the hallway, channel overlap won’t be a big problem, and will be max 5 device connect to one AP at same time most likely, and the traffic is queued at the top router 4M / IP address. Does anyone with similar setup noticed compatibility issue with this AP, we want only provide stable (but not fast) Wi-Fi.

The reason we want try hAP ac lite is the hotel had limited budget and they still want have both 2.4G and 5G signals with controlled Fit APs.

Please help me out, we are quite familiar with RouterOS itself, but it’s the first time using mikrotik AP products to make Wi-Fi coverage, doesn’t have much experience on it.

The hAP ac Lite spec sheet says:

"Yes (Ether5), 0,5 A" so I presume that means 802.3af because that's 15 watts at 30V max.

The hAP ac Lite Quick Start Guide says:

"The Ether5 port suports PoE output for powering other RouterBOARD devices. The port has auto detection feature, so you can connect Laptops and other non-PoE devices without damaging them. The PoE on Ether5 outputs approximately 2V below input voltage, and supports up to 0.58A (So provided 24V PSU will provide 22V/0.58A output to the Ether5 PoE port)."

I'm only using a hAP ac Lite in a home environment, but I've never had a problem with any of the 7 Apple devices we have around here... 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, 2 MacBook Pros, and an Apple TV.

I do recall reading somewhere that the wireless "Preamble Mode" (under Advanced Wirelesss Settings) should be set to "both" (as opposed to "long" or "short") for maximum compatibility with Apple devices. "Both" is the default setting so you shouldn't have a problem.

The hAP ac Lite is a great little router.

Best of luck,

John

Its passive POE. Not 802.3af/at

Normal switches will NOT power this device. The switches we use for devices like this are either the RB260GSP (4 AP's MAX - unless you use many GSP's) or the UBNT EdgeMAX Switches 24-48 port passive POE Switch
