RB493G Dual Wifi NIC

Wed Jul 12, 2017 2:05 am

I have a Routerboard 493G in which I've had a Mikrotik WIFI NIC (2.4GHz, can't remember exactly which model at this moment). Client wanted to have 5GHz also, and I had a spare Mikrotik Wifi NIC around which supports 5Ghz (again don't have the exact model in front of me) which I pulled out of a spare RB493G. Installed this second NIC into the Routerboard and it is automatically detected and shows up as wlan2 under interfaces and is enabled, however it shows only the slave flag and not the running and slave flags like the other NIC. Likewise when I try to add it to the bridge it shows it as a disabled interface, have tried clicking on enable but that doesn't seem to make any difference..

I've looked through the configurations and everything seems to be identical between the two interfaces (excepting the 2.4GHz vs 5 GHz settings).

Is there something that I'm missing, or is it just that multiple wifi nics in one system isn't allowed???

Cheers,
Mike

What are the RB493 ROS and Firmware versions?

Have you tried resetting to no defaults, or a netinstall?

The RB493g is running ROS 6.39.2 and I believe 3.24 firmware. I will confirm the firmware rev once the wan link to that site comes back up today.

I have not tried anything dramatic with the configuration as this is a live router. It has been running for 3 or 4 years in it's current configuration with the single wifi card. The second wifi card came out of another RB493g running 6.39.2 From my notes the first wifi should be a Mikrotik R52nM and the one I've just installed should be an R52Hn.

A reset to no defaults (save an export first, then load it after the reset) is really quick.

You may also tick the "Run After Reset" and select the .rsc to be loaded after the reset to no defaults; if you go this way, insert a /delay 30 as the first command, in order for the OS to load all the drivers so that you don't run into any problems while ROS loads the .rsc at boot.

The key point is having wired L2 to it, that's a safety net, so that you can just reconnect after the reset via mac-winbox and restore the config, either because you want to do it manually, or if Run After Reset fails to load completely the export automatically after reset for whichever reason.

So check first that you can reach it from the PE router you connect to just in case: i.e. you see it on IP > Neighbors, and can mac-telnet to it from PE router.

If the reset doesn't fix this, first thing I'd do is making sure that:
  • - Card is perfectly seated, and doesn't touch any metal surface
    - PSU is sized accordingly for this; RB493 maximum power draw is 16W. RH52nM is 2W but the R52Hn can reach 7W! If you're using 24V, this means the PSU should be > 700mA, if 12V 1.4A...
    - Pigtails are 100% perfect, MMCX clicking in soundly, etc.
