Mikrotiks that just won't upgrade firmware

Mon Sep 04, 2017 7:34 pm

Hello Mikrotik community! I'm hoping that the hive mind can help.

We have about 110 Mikrotik-branded devices in production with various models throughout.

We're having a problem upgrading some of them. Specifically, the firmware. Using system -> routerboard -> upgrade, we start the upgrade like any normal person. Follwing that, the log shows "Firmware upgraded successfully, please reboot for changes to take effect!" So, of course, we reboot. I've tried waiting 30 minutes before the reboot, but it's always the same:

After the reboot, the old version of firmware remains.

Some sample date from real devices failing:

Model Serial Number Factory Firmware Current Firmware Upgrade Firmware Packages
2011UAS-2HnD 419F027531xx 3.08 3.33 3.41 6.40.3
2011iLS 447804C52Cxx 3.1 3.41 3.41 6.40.3
CCR1036-12G-4S 42A10257F8xx 3.08 3.39 3.41 6.40.3

Is there a trick to getting this to work? Same results whether I use Winbox, terminal or WebFig. Can I force it without losing the config? They're all in production in some relatively remote locations, so I don't really want to have a long outage while I restore configs / rebuild from zero. Yes, I'm trying to do this all remotely. I know. I shouldn't do that.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I would like to know the same thing....

I experienced this specifically with LHG AC and SXTsq AC units.

Some additional information:

After trying to upgrade RouterOS, the router reboots, but old RouterOS remains. The log file says: "kernel failure in previous reboot".

I then tried changing some wireless settings (specifically the security profile, plus I tried to change the mode from station to bridge), but it doesn't appear to work. I'm accessing the unit from the wireless side - the link drops (assuming it is applying the new settings), but when the station associates again, the "upgraded router" still has the old RouterOS (plus the "kernel failure in previous reboot" error in the log).

Now it seems I can hardly change ANY wireless settings - a major headache!

MikroTik Support: Any advice?

On the specific unit I tried earlier today, I'm running 6.40.3. I tried upgrading to the bugfix versions too, but nothing seems to work.

Firmware upgrading is not important, it rarely contains anything for the end-user.
I suggest only to check updates for RouterOS and not to worry about RouterBOOT

Thanks Normis

But as I stated in my reply, I am not able to upgrade RouterOS!

And after my upgrade attempt failed, I'm no longer able to change any wireless settings either!

I believe the original poster also referred to RouterOS, but incorrectly called it "firmware".

Please have a second look at my previous post for more details.
