What MikroTik devices are sold with factory pre-installed heatsinks?

Tue Oct 17, 2017 12:39 am

I want to know, if MikroTik devices are protected from overheating and possible CPU throttling.
What low-cost devices are coming with factory pre-installed heatsinks?
What about hAP and hEX series and their lite versions?

Mikrotik specifies what the ambient temperature should be for each device model to work reliably (and it appears to be up to +70°C for most devices). You can find this information on the official product page: https://mikrotik.com/products.

Hi,
What application, environment, etc. are you looking at? In general the rack mount units (-RM) are fan cooled but reading the product literature will always indicate fan or passive cooling.

How ambient temperature alone can guarantee that device (hEX for example) can dissipate 5W of heat from his chips under high load? Take RaspberryPi's CPU for an example, It will overheat under load and require heatsink at least, but often sold without one.
Don't get me wrong, I had heaps of bad experience with overheating routers, APs, IP cameras (Ubiquity ugh) in the past, so now I want to know more of the devices before I recommend them to my clients and buy them for myself.

Heat transfer is a function of temperature delta. The bigger the difference from the thing to be cooled and the cooling element, the better. Knowing the air temperature, the thermal resistance and the energy dissipated, one can reliable calculate the range of ambient temperatures where the device can operate. Or the maker can just toss it in the oven, crank the heat, and find out when it stops working.

So, the heatsink doesn't matter. The important thing is the temperature used to certify the unit. The "desktop" models, usually, take as high as 50 ambient Celsius. The outdoor units usually take higher - I believe some of them goes as high as 70 Celsius. Go to the product page. There you will find the correct information.

Thanks for clarification. I still think it is crucial to keep temperature of the components and chips at the minimum, even if they function normally, so devices will last much longer.
And since MikroTik devices have temperature sensors in them I will monitor them for some time and see if they require heatsink to be installed.

That's true. Although not every Mikrotik has a temperature sensor.

Looking at my 750Gr3, fixed at the wall. Its temperature reading is at 45 Celsius. This unit is tested by Mikrotik up to 70 ambient Celsius. Looks good to me.
Looking at two 1100AHx2, on the rack. Its temperature reading is at 42 and 44 Celsius. These units are tested by Mikrotik up to 60 ambient Celsius. Looks good to me too.
But I have another 3 hAP AC Lite, which don't have temperature sensors. They are certified to 70 ambient Celsius too, and are just warm to the touch - just like the 750Gr3. Must be good too.

The Mikrotik routers are quite a sturdy bunch. I have little experience with them - but we have people here with (literally) thousands of them on the wild. I don't remember to see a thread with someone complaining of death heat.

Thanks for sharing. Really want to get my hands on them for testing under high load.
