LAN host cannot browse until DHCP lease removed/reset

Sun Nov 26, 2017 11:53 pm

Hello,

I have a problem I cannot solve myself and need your help please - Every day or two I get a call from a user saying they cannot browse the Internet. When I remove their LAN IP from DHCP lease list, they get a new IP and the problem is gone, until next time.

The user can (but not always) get the login page and successfully login. I can ping the host from the router fine. The host has all the correct settings from router such as gateway address, dns etc, but cannot browse.

This has happened on the same user's iPhone 3 times, a android phone twice, and over the weekend a new user's iPad and MacBook air.

There are around 200 devices using this hotspot at peak times with a total of only 3 users experiencing this problem.

Network looks like MT Router > UBNT Tough Switch > UBNT Rocket AC > UBNT NBE-5AC > Tough Switch > UniFi AP > HOST

Thank you

Any ideas anyone?

Went to site today and both my iPhone and macbook got hotspot dhcp addresses but couldn't login/browse or even ping gateway. How is it possible to be connected to wifi network, have a valid dhcp and router address but not be able to ping the gateway?? I removed both my host addresses from lease list and as soon as I got new IPs everything was as should be....

Pls help, guys!

Thanks

It sounds like you're using a hotspot. . .

And your problem sounds to me that the leases and hotspot IP pool are getting out of whack from each other.
If you have around 200 users - what IP range / mask are you using inside the hotspot LAN?
I'd recommend setting it up as a /22 so that you're not running out of IP addresses in the pool.

e.g. if the hotspot network interface is 192.168.88.1/24, change it to 192.168.88.1/22
Then go into the dhcp pool and make the range be 192.168.88.x - 192.168.91.254

This will be 1024 addresses.

If this isn't the problem, then I'd look for stale entries in the hosts table where a host is bound to some address they don't actually have.
The telling thing is if the "address" and "to address" columns don't match.

Hey man thanks for reply,

I have previously checked all those things and everything looks fine. The hotspot vlan has /23 with plenty of addresses left. There are a bunch of /28 vlans that have not yet had this issue, although there are not as many hosts compared to the hotspot vlan so sample size might not show issue yet.

Updated:

Updating ROS and UBNT firmwares seems to have fixed the issue somehow.
