RB962UiGS-5HacT2HnT (hAP ac) + UAP-AC-LR: PoE???  [SOLVED]

Fri Dec 08, 2017 10:38 am

Dears,

I have a question with a home use installation:

At the moment I have two hAP ac running wifi pretty stable, but band steering gets important to me and this does not work on mikrotik. I want to test two of the Unifi APs (UAP-AC-LR). Those are can be powered via 802.3af/A PoE & 24V PoE.
Now my question is - and this is what I am not sure after what I have read so far - if I can run the UAP-AC-LR without its additional PoE injector together with my mikrotik. Port 5 of my hAP ac is a Passive PoE out port if I read the technical documents correctly. Does Unifi work on this port in Gigabit connection?

I need your help since I do not want to break either of both devices due to incompatibility or voltages issues.
Has anyone some experience on this?

Thanks a lot in advance,
empy

simply answer your question, AC-LR works with HAP AC port 5.
But, the bandwith of this kind of connection is lower compared to attach LR to a gigabyte port switch.(if you don't have other gigabyte switch connected to HAP AC, then never mind)

You can connect to port 5 and you will get gigabit PoE with no problems at all.

I use a similar setup using an RB2011 to an older UAP. The AC-LR will do exactly what you want it to and be gigabit.

Thank for your answers..
I am just diving deeper into those band steeering and roaming issues...And also found a Cisco AP that could be interesting for me. Could that also be connected?

May I ask, would a Cisco AP (e.g. the 1832) be able to connect? In its datasheet they say 802.3af/802.3at or Enhanced PoE. Is Enhanced PoE compatible with the Mikrotiks?
Why are there so many different standards.... mhhmmmhm...

I would be really glad to receive some feedback on my additional questions.... Have a nice weekend anyways ;)
Thanks a lot, empy

af/at is more or less the PoE standard.

The PoE the hap AC kicks out is 24v so only really Mikrotik and Ubiquiti use it. Even then UBNT are moving to af/at on the UniFi stuff as it’s more “corporate”.

@Steveocee, you did mean Wireless devices under AC-LR to WAN speed, and i was talking about LAN to LAN (wireless device under AC-LR talking to other LAN devices connected to HAP AC)
For example, playback bluray moveis by using KODI app on a iPad (connected to AC-LR, NFS file server is connected to a gigabyte switch) is glitch when i connect AC-LR to HAP AC port 5. While it is smoothless when connect AC-LR to a gigabyte switch LAN . My typing looks like confuse, but it's the best i can describe, the switch on HAP AC is not gigabyte capable as it claimed.

Are you using bridge or hardware switch chip?

As of couple of months ago, the unifi ap ac lite and lr are 802.3af poe (and ship with 802.3af injectors)

They won't work with RB260GS/RB260GSP/HEX/hAP ac/... unless you use injectors in-between.

Their higher end access points "pro" (3x3) and "hd" (4x4 mu-mimo), need 802.3at and have never worked off of passive.

Since there's no barrel jack on the devices, there's no way to use poe splitters.

Many are buying the US-8-60W (8 port switch with 4 POE af ports, no passive, no 802.3at) for about a 100 USD/EUR/GBP.
