OpenVPN Version

Thu Dec 28, 2017 2:55 am

We have the latest version of RouterOS (6.41?) installed on a wapLTE device. The OpenVPN Client running on that device is restarting every 10 seconds or so after appearing to connect. The OpenVPN Server resides on a non-Mikrotik router but I am presently unable to determine what version of OpenVPN the server is running (as its not my server).

I suspect that this issue might be a version incompatibility with OpenVPN since :

a) a Linux Mint 17 OpenVPN Client (OpenVPN version 2.3) connects correctly and remains connected

b) a Windows OpenVPN Client (OpenVPN 2.4.4) also restarts every 10 seconds)

What command can I issue via the Terminal to determine the version of OpenVPN that is in use in the RouterOS?

Also, is there a log for the OpenVPN connection, and if so how do I view it?

Mikrotik uses an OpenVpn implementation of it own. You will not find parity of capabilities between Mikrotik's version and the official one.

That said, we have known restritions on Mikrotik implementation. Among others:

1) No UDP tunnels
2) No compression

So, check the configuration needed to connect on the server. If it uses UDP or compression... You are out of luck.

@ Paternot: Yes, thank you for confirming that - I had already ascertained those missing capabilities from the forum.

Would make sense for them to implement both of those as their wireless routers are finding niches in the IoT field now, and prospective customers definitely aren't happy about the extra traffic involved in regions where data rates are high. Some of them are opting for Ubiquiti or other reputable brands instead.

Yes. We already pointed that out to them. The word is that we will have it in RouterOS 7.

That is the good news.

Bad news is: RouterOS 7 was promised over 4 years ago.

Hey friends! Sorry little offtopic. Can somebody help me? I want connect my windows notebook to my mikrotik using OpenVPN. But both have "grey" IP address. I was make two 6to4 tunels and get IPv6 addresses. I can ping my router from notebook and can connect by Winbox. But I can't still connect using OVPN. Naturally firewall have open needed port, and i see packets from laptop on this but no any info from OVPN.
I can connect to router OVPN by ipv4 locally - it works. But I can't connect even locally using ipv6.
Need help...

Так, це є so off-topic that you should open a new thread for that. As both ends (the PC and the Mikrotik) seem to be under your administration, the easiest way out should be to try to use one of the other VPN protocols available, SSTP (easier to understand) or IPsec. These should make better friends with IPv6.
