Wireless Wire RBwAPG-60ad plugged in and internet went down

Thu Mar 08, 2018 12:20 am

Can anyone explain why when I plugged the RBwAPG-60ad into my network switch it took out internet access?

I couldn't reach the internet at all?

My Setup:
ISP WAN Cable -> (WAN Port) Router / Router (LAN Port) -> Switch <- RBwAPG-60ad (slave) = No access to internet!
LAN is 192.168.1.0/24 with DHCP server and gateway of 192.168.1.254
RBwAPG-60ad (slave) is 192.168 88.3 out of the box, nothing changed.
No IP conflicts.

Unplugged RBwAPG-60ad and Internet came right back. What kind of device does that??? Seriously?

Is the Master device plugged anywhere when you see this?

Master was not plugged in yet.
Plugging in the slave should not cause this to happen.
The entire network other than internet access worked fine.
Once plugged in it killed internet access.
Once unplugged internet came right back.
This makes no sense.
Is the slave poisoning ARP or using some other protocol/service that causes this?
I've never seen this behavior.

I haven't gotten that far yet. I didn't expect it to wreak havoc just being plugged in.
I will plug it directly into my laptop and check the version. Then what? Update to latest if it isn't the latest version?
Is there a serious firmware bug I'm not aware of?

the device kit is configured in a way, that it acts like basic cable. The result should be the same as if plugging a regular ethernet cable. There is no DHCP server, no other config, just basic bridge.
I don't see how it could cause the effect you describe. Could it be a coincidence?

No coincidence at all. I plug it into my switch and as soon as it is booted up I lose internet access.
I unplug it and within 10 seconds internet access returns.
It's as if it somehow blocks traffic destined for the internet.
There is absolutely no IP conflicts at all.
Could it be poisoning routes somehow?

Unless you made special config on the wAP60 unit, this is not possible.
Post the full config from the wAP60 unit (command "/export"). Also, make sure you didn't plug both devices into your switch, making a loop.
Also make sure your existing network is not using the same IP addresses as the wAP units (192.168.88.2 or .3)

Only ever plugged 1 unit in so no loop issues here. My network is 192.168.1.0/24, there are no devices on my network with 192.168.88.#.

Output of /export :

Most likely you changed the IP address in quickSet, since this line is the cause of your problem:
/ip address add address=192.168.88.3/8 comment=defconf interface=ether1 network=192.0.0.0
Can you also type in console:
"/system default-configuration print"
and paste the output?

Re: Wireless Wire RBwAPG-60ad plugged in and internet went down

Sat Mar 10, 2018 1:19 am

So, before I did anything I took it out if the box and plugged it in and it killed connection to the internet for the entire network.

I changed the IP from the default to 192.168.1.99 and saved it. All good and fine, accessed it plugged directly into a laptop. I then tried to plug it into my switch and had the same thing that happened prior happen again, no internet across the whole network.

Interestingly I logged into webfig and did shutdown and of course the problem went away because it was no longer running.

Before I went in and grabbed the output foe you that I posted here I reset back to default. I then plugged it directly into my laptop. Upon first login it took me to quickset and IP address box was blank??? So I then put the default IP back in and saved then grabbed the output, that is why it shows that.

Why when resetting back to default does it blank the IP box if the factory default IP is still intact apparently?

Moreover, why are you pointing the finger at that line as probable cause of the issue when it did not apparently exist out of box?

Is there a simpler explanation? I want to understand.

I will do as you mentioned and post back here.

Re: Wireless Wire RBwAPG-60ad plugged in and internet went down

Before I go through more trouble than it is worth I thought I would try something else.

I took the other unit which I didn't plug in at all yet, powered it up and plugged it into my switch.

Within a few seconds internet went out.

I unplugged it and 5 seconds later internet is accessible again.

Even more curious I took it to my friends network across the street and plugged it into his switch. Within a few seconds internet access there went out.

Unplugged it and internet came back.

What is wrong with these units?
In what way are these factory configured that is causing this?

I have never seen any device cause such issues.

Something is seriously wrong.

Untouched factory default from Master Unit:

Are you able to log down what happened?

I have a lot of this units running and never seen this issue!
Do you and your friend using the same switch/ router?
Did you try an update on WAP60G?

Yes, in that case, connect again and enter 192.168.88.3 and the netmask 255.255.255.0(/24) from the list. That should fix it. These addressses are only for management and you normally don’t have to change them, the link will work with the default ip addresses.

You can check the sticker inside both units (on the inside of the removable cover) to make sure which unit has which ip

I reset both units back to original out of box configuration.
Master as stickered is 192.168.88.2.
Slave as stickered is 192.168.88.3.
I've checked both units individually after reset configuration.
For Master the IP 192.168.88.2 is on the bridge interface as it should be, no IP addresses on WLAN or Ethernet interfaces.
For Slave the IP 192.168.88.3 is on the bridge interface as it should be, no IP addresses on WLAN or Ethernet interfaces.

If I plug the Master into my switch the internet goes down. I can ping everything on my LAN just no internet or DNS resolution. Unplug it and internet comes back.

If I plug the Slave into my switch the internet goes down. I can ping everything on my LAN just no internet or DNS resolution. Unplug it and internet comes back.

I've tested and get the same results on my neighbors network.

I'd like to get this solved as it isn't making any sense and I believe these products will serve a purpose and fit a niche.

Is there any way that this device is causing these problems because I have VLAN's in my network flowing through my switch as does my neighbor? Shouldn't be because it's just a full L2 bridge. Correct?

Re: Wireless Wire RBwAPG-60ad plugged in and internet went down  [SOLVED]

Sat Mar 10, 2018 4:57 pm

@webfixnow:
It might be the case that the wap-60g alters your (R)STP Topology
(you might have forgotten to configure a VLAN on a fromery blocked link).

Set the STP Protocol-Mode on the bridge of both WAP-60G to "none" and try again.

@Normis/Mikrotik:
according to the default-configuration script this is the bridge-configuration:
/interface bridge
add name=bridge disabled=no protocol-mode=rstp comment=defconf auto-mac=no admin-mac=[/interface ethernet get ether1 mac-address];
Why is RSTP enabled at all? Handling loops or redundancies should not be of concern to a wireless-bridge. Making a pair of WAP-60G active speakeing to a RSTP domain nearly always makes things worse to troubleshoot. The benefit is inexistant IMO.

I will try disabling STP Protocol on both the master and the slave.

I don't know if the problem will not occur if I plug one into the switch and another just powered up letting the units create the preconfigured wireless ptp bridge.

I'm going to try that first before disabling STP on both. I will report back behavior and scenarios.

@sup5 You solved it. Changed RSTP to None on each bridge interface and it no longer takes my network down when plugging in a unit. :D

So now you should find the cause within your network.
I suspect you've got multiple links to your internet gateway and forgot to configure a VLAN on one of the links

A simple STP-topology-change would never bring any services down, if the network was set up properly.
