wAP AC vs cAP AC

Mon Apr 09, 2018 12:44 pm

So the idea is that I want to use mikrotik through my house. I have a gigabit connection with my ISP so I want some Access points that can withstand this speed. Also I will need a router recommendation because I think a Hex is not enough and neither a RB3011.

Thanks

If you are able to get gigabit speed from local ISP and you are not happy with hEX and RB3011, then you may consider CCR1009 router. I have brought two located in different countries.

Back to your question, you are asking for the comments on the two products wAP ac and cAP ac. I do not know whether you have seen other threads in this forum or not, there are problems in the current cAP ac. Later I shall carry out some tests on wAP ac to check its performance against my hAP ac^2 (using the same chipset as cAP ac).

I'm not saying that I'm not happy with them. I have installed a Hex at office and it's good just not fast enough for my home network. Without fastrack it caps at 600 mbps and without fastrack I can't have a guest network with limited speed as queues don't work with fastrack. I don't know what to say about the RB3011 because I didn't test it but a friend said it won't work full gigabit without fastrack.

On the ap side again. I saw that the cap ac has some problems. At its max extension channel of 866 Mbps I can only get 500 on a speed test.

Check https://mikrotik.com/product/RB3011UiAS ... estresults you will see that RB3011 can do 1Gbps but of course it will depend how you use it.

I looked and on 25 firewall rules it caps at 836 mbps.

To my understanding it means that traffic will be capped at that speed only if it will have to go through all 25 rules before it is matched. Usually, as the first rule, you would have something to allow all established and related connections. Therefore most of the traffic would be matched by the first rule and therefore not capped at lower speed.

Have you gotten the chance to test the 2 ap?

I have already done tests based on hAP ac^2 and wAP ac, as follows:

Since the chipset of hAP ac^2 is similar to that of cAP ac, I do believe you can take a look at them when you do comparisons. Based on the figures presented, it definitely and clearly shows that wAP ac is much better and hAP ac^2. Since there are problems with the wireless part of IPQ401X including hAP ac^2 and cAP ac and others. It seems that MikroTik put their efforts on 60G link (using IPQ4019 chipset, which is the same family of IPQ4018). Please pay attention to the Retr (packets retry count) of Listing 6, it is too high and unacceptable. For more details about hAP ac^2, please see the following thread:

3011 and hEX can both do 980 on my connection.

If you want a WAP to keep up... you need something to be 3x3 AC and not hit its head on the ceiling the way the wAP AC does. The cAP AC isn't cutting it yet with a 2x2 antenna and some sort of driver issue that they keep working on RCs for.

Ruckus R610 will get up in the Gig range under good circumstances.
