10GBASE-T for Mikrotik

Wed May 09, 2018 10:28 am

Why does Mikrotik not apply 10GBASE-T (8P8C, 100m(Class Ea cat 6a or 7)) when designing equipment for SMB and HOME segments?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10_Gigabi ... #10GBASE-T
For example:
New hEX RB750Gr (4) 2018 - 8port 10GBASE-T (all ports with PoE output) - price ~$150. Why 8 ports? Because 5 is not enough even for home use.

Because 99.9% of home users don't need > 1gbps, since their devices won't support it. 8 port 10GB for $150? Who are you kidding! A switch alone would be $500+.

I would appreciate more ports in Mikrotik products though, 4+1 is not enough these days.

ha ha OK. My HOME environment consists of:
1. Gaming station, has a network interface Asus XG-C100C (1xRJ45, 10GbE)
https://www.asus.com/Networking/XG-C100C/
2. My NAS, has a network interface Supermicro AOC-STG-I2T (2xRJ45, 10GbE)
3. Two access points Ruckus R720 (4x4:4ss 802.11ac Wave 2 access point with 2.5Gbps bakhaul, PoE 802.3af/at/bt), has a network interface (1xRJ45, 2.5GbE)
https://www.ruckuswireless.com/products ... uckus-r720

In which Mikrotik can I put it all without losing speed?
Which Mikrotik should I use?

I think this Mikrotik does not exist ... :(

Congratulations, you belong to 0.1% of home users. And I'm tempted to say 0.01%. I do believe that 1GBit may be a bottleneck sometimes, and I see 2.5Gbit (if/when it catches on and becomes the standard speed available on all devices) as good solution. But anything faster will be hard to justify, because how often can someone at home need such speeds? But hey, I'm definitely not against it.

It's possible that no current MikroTik product can satisfy you. But that happens when you're too ahead.

No. explane how your nas or gaming station use the 10 ge interface better than 1gig interface. How fast do you write to diks in the nas? How fast does the game machine receive packets - and last - how fast is your internet connection. :) There is no need for more than 1 gig connection at anny homes. No matter what in today world.

How fast is 1 gig? - you can copy 99,9% of all games from one place to another in less than 1 min.

And there is no problem with this speed. just buy a ccr 1072.. But i promice - in practical use - next 10 years. you miggt - in maximum 0.00000001% of the time - be using that speed in practical use.

Well, even single HDD can read/write more data than 1Gbit ethernet can handle (at least for part of its surface and for sequential operations). Put more or them in some better NAS (or just stuff it with SSDs, if you don't want any compromise) and you can utilize more than 1Gbit easy. And I hear that games got awfully big lately. But it will be for 0.0000nothing% of time when you need this, I'd agree with that.

As I wrote, I'm not against higher speeds. After all, 1Gbit is with us for a long time. A little step up wouldn't hurt, even if the speed would be used for just few minutes now and then. But the problem is that most people can easily live without it, so they won't pay too much extra for higher speeds. So it seems logical that manufacturers won't rush to it.

ok.
Internet channel 1Gbit - wire - main
Internet channel LTE (SXT LTE) backup

1. NAS:
8 x 2TB SSD Samsung SATA3 (540/520 MB/s) = zfs raidz2
4 x 4TB WD RED (150 MB/s) = zfs stripe

2. Gaming station - 2 x 2TB SSD Samsung m.2 PCI-E (3500/2100 MB/s) = RAID 1

In addition, the house (private house) is home to two families, totaling 9 people:
1. 9 phones connected by wifi
2. 3 tablets by wifi
3. 6 laptops by wifi
4. 3 televisions 4k by wifi
5. internet radio on wifi :)
6. one stationary computer ... ancient .. with a network card 1Gbit
7. and yet some kind of shit on wifi ... I do not remember what is called, but it requires internet ... :)
and this should not interfere with each other ... :)

1. Once a month, a full backup of all devices is performed on the NAS
2. Every few minutes incremental backup of all devices is performed on the NAS
3. Synchronization is established between all devices according to certain rules
4. NAS downloads and distributes torrents 24/7
5. NAS distributes 4k content and music collection to TVs and to the network by wifi
6. There is a static public IP address and a configured local VPN server - all home services are accessible through the Internet 24/7
7. NAS stores a full home media archive (mostly video 2k and 4k) - which is often used over the network (the gaming station is often used for video editing) - there is even a little 8k

p.s.
There is also a home server virtualization based on Proxmox with virtual machines that are stored on the NAS ... :) ...

Don't bother, the copper modules are useless currently and there is no information about when they will be fixed. They "may" work under limited conditions but I wouldn't trust them even in such cases.

I have:
1) NAS server, 24 x SSD in stripe of 3 x raidz2 as main pool, 8 x HDD raidz2 for surveillance video adn X550-T2
2) Backups server 11 x HDD in raidz and 4 HDD in stripe of mirrors (zfs or course), x540-T2
3) Workstation, Samsung 960Pro, x540-T2
All of them connected to CRS-317 with 4 x S+RJ10, backup and NAS has cross connection, so each server connected by one wire to CRS317 and Workstation has LACP with 2 links.

I was able to get about 9Gbit (~8900-8800) through CRS317 and slightly above 9Gbit with direct patch cord between servers. For testing purposes I used iperf-3.1.3.
But here you also can see a topic that shows some issues of these SPF+ modules.

The rest clients are 1G mostly, except 4 cameras which are using own 2960 switch, that has 100Mbit connections.

Good, there is a product for that. https://mikrotik.com/product/crs317_1g_16s_rm
Great, does it support PoE Out for my home devices? :)
I think your answer is No ... :) :) :) And why should I have SFP+ at home in such quantity - this is crazy. SFP+ - technology for SMB / Enterprise!

R&D isn't cheap. Higher end hardware like 10Gbit Ethernet isn't cheap either. Such upgrades require a whole set of architecture upgrades at the same time. This ll needs to be tested to make sure it works well together. Things can't be changed on the fly. If you need something specific there is generally already a product targeted at you that will fit your needs. Why would you need 10Gbps links with POE anyway?
