Im looking for a bit of advice on setting up ptp link using the 5.8 band.


Below are a two pics of the topology.

Following setup on both ends: rb532a with a xr5 running at full power (600mw duh, hehe ) connected to a 32.5 dbi Parabolic 5° (hori. and vert.) all powered by a 48v 60 watt poe supply.

Height imposed** by curvature: 23.6 ft.

Tower site on point A: 70Ft

Tower site on point B: 80Ft

umm, virtually no cable loss: 1 metre of lmr400.

The questions I had in mind are mainly the latency that would be inmposed on the link (plan on using it mainly for voip) and also projected throughput.

Also I plan on using turbo mode (i.e 40mhz) and one more thing the area is completely interference free and will probably remain that way for a long time unless NASA or so does something beyond me.....ha


Umm any insights would be much appreciated.

Not a bad plan.... If you have the cash I'd use an nstreme2 dual system since you plan to use VoIP and such.

Second, I'd use the SR vs the XR cards. The XRs are brand new and unpoven while the SR cards have a solid proven performance record. I am sure in a couple of months the bugs will have been worked out of the XR cards if you are willing to wait.

Also I don't know if the MT532s will handle two XR cards. Your PoE design has nothing to do with what the MT532 power supply can handle (unless of course you under power the MT532). I believe that the MT532 has a 15watt capability in its on board power supply, 5 watts for the board and 10 watts for radio cards. Something to think about anyway....

But...is there any knowed bug?
Where are you listen XR5 are bug's afflicted?

Thanks much for the prompt replies.... Ive been considering using nstreme ( both dual and single version) but Ive heard of the problems* it can cause with time sensitve data. I.e voip .... I figure an ack timeout of 111us cant do much harm to voip (5ghz 40mhz at 13 miles). Ill experiment with all variations when the time comes and ill keep you guys posted with the results.

Your over the air latency should be very low and not affect VoIP at all. I can give you a couple of ping measurements from a Trango 5.8 system:

11 miles: 422us
17 miles: 482us

so, about a half a millisecond round trip lantency. I would expect the Mikrotik to be around there also. If you are in a noise free environment, should work great.
