You can connect a 3G/LTE modem for connectivity, or attach a USB hard drive to store logs, or other things. Even for SMB file sharing.

I just tried connecting an Android phone to the CCR1036-12G-4S, but no LTE interfaces showed up (however, the USB device was detected). I also noticed there's no LTE package in the RouterOS bundle.

Does CCR1036-12G-4S even support LTE?

Connecting Android phone to CCR is no different than connecting the same phone to a PC. While I've never connected Android phone to a Routerboard device, I did a few connections to a PC. I've never seen it to show itself as LTE modem. It was always a (pseudo-)network device with DHCP server giving out private IP addresses (and then doing NAT and whatnot). And even for that, I had to enable "USB tethering" function on the phone itself or else it only showed as MTP or (when I was being lucky) storage device.

Android devices are just "too smart" for such simple use.

USB can be also used for serial converters (for example I successfully connected to CISCO ASA 5505 through serial-to-USB cable to RBD52Ui and managed it remotely through terminal opened in winbox)
Another possible usage is UPS. Despite official description which says that UPS package supports only APC Smart Signaling Protocol, It seems that it also have basic support for USB HID UPS, which is becoming standard among many manufacturers. (In my case I have perfectly working CyberPower CP900EPFCLCDa-AU connected to RBD52G)

Unfortunately, Mikrotik does not support USB printers or some universal USB-over-IP solution.

Thanks for such a detailed reply. I guess the only thing I was worried about was that the CCR routers might not support USB devices, since it's got an interesting CPU architecture (TILE), and in a lot of cases nobody writes drivers for esoteric architectures. I guess MikroTik guys did, if you have it working.

I wanted to get a USB LTE interface for the office, to have as a failover solution, because we're having Comcast outages at least a couple of times a month. There's no other ISPs in the building, so the only option is a good LTE connection.

The peripherals list on the MikroTIk wiki is also irrelevant for me, because most of the devices on there are for EU markets (different bands), except maybe the Novatel USB730L (I've seen it on Verizon's online store). But I'll leave this discussion about LTE devices for another thread.

I'll report back when I have at least one LTE USB device recognized.

-- edit:
Also a good idea about the UPS USB based connection, I'll try that next week. We've had Junipers routers die due to outages because we couldn't connect our UPS to them to perform a graceful shutdown (both Juniper routers we had ended up with flash corruption, we can't even re-flash them with the downloaded firmware).
