[Request] RouterOS development/feature roadmap

Sat Jul 28, 2018 11:17 pm

Good evening,

I'm wondering why Mikrotik never considered publishing a development/feature roadmap for ROS?

I think this would be quite nice.

Thanks

I'm not sure. In the past there have been lots of promises w.r.t. development and that has mostly lead
to disappointment. But now, sometimes nice features suddenly appear in the RC version.

While this might be true, for many business and enterprise cusomers the current situation of constantly hoping and waiting that urgently required features and fixes will make it into the next RC (or ROSv7...) is simply unacceptable. Thus a roadmap might be beneficial for businesses to decide between Mikrotik or another vendor for their next project. Also not every missing feature or fix has the same value to every customer or customer segment (home vs. soho vs. enterprise).

Yes sure, but how useful is a roadmap when it is not followed anyway?
The actual route being taken depends much more on the ideas of the day than on a long term planning.
It isn't even clear what market is being focused on. There used to be a direction towards businesses,
with larger and more powerful routers and the promise of a new and more powerful routing engine,
but lately we see mainly new features focused on the small router for home and family market.
Important subsystems like IPv6 and BGP are left in the dark, although they were on the roadmap before.

That's the point. Imho. the whole CCR - "Core" router series is USELESS for businesses or enterprises which need performant and rock-solid routing as well as management features such as BGP4 SNMP MIBs. I personally do not understand why Mikrotik has abandoned their initial strategy with the CCR to attract business and enterprise customers. This could have been another big market segment for them. What happens now is that other "new" and less-expensive players such as for example Huawei try to fill this gap within Europe. This could have been MT as well.
