Wireless disconnects at 9pm?

Wed Mar 21, 2007 3:40 pm

For some reason one of my wireless backbone links sporadically disconnects at 9pm. It will stay up solid for 3-4 days and then will drop at 9pm. The log on one end of the link says disconnected due to extensive data loss and the other end says no beacon. Both ends are Routerboard 532A's using Ubiquiti SR5 cards.

We have a fractional T1 running as backup right now so when it goes down I am able to get into both sides and the way I've been bringing the link back up is by disabling both Wireless interfaces and then enabling them. When I do that the link comes back up solid.

This link has been up for 8 months now and has been solid as a rock until the last 2 weeks. Any ideas?

I tried watchdog but found that if a ping fails for more than one minute it reboots the router and I lose the log info that tells me what happened. Is there a way to save the RouterOS log when the router reboots? I did setup a ping session using Robotest which will ping each of the 3 routers every 5 seconds from an old server we use for testing. The nice thing about Robotest is it has a log that tells you how many pings were successful, how many failed, and what time they failed. I will leave it running over the weekend and will report back.

I dont know about a "Log dump" but you could log all data to a syslog server.

Syslog server, good idea! Thanks :D

It went down again at 21:00:38 on March 23 with the same log entries as before. Both routers are on battery backup and the logs don't indicate loss of power, so I'm at a loss to explain why this is happening. I'm going to contact Mikrotik about this to see if they can help figure it out.

Try setting 'periodic-calibration' = 'enabled' on both ends.

All wireless interfaces already have Periodic Calibration set to Enabled but thank you for the reply.

I have enabled watchdog on the routers so they will reboot if the link they are watching goes down. I have also setup all 3 Mikrotik routers in my network to log events to a syslog server as csickles suggested. So far the links have been up for over a week with no downtime. I also upgraded RouterOS to version 2.9.41 after I started troubleshooting this problem.

I will make another post in a week or two with an update.

could it be interfearence from cell phones...and a certin cellphone company has a unlimited plan that goes into effect at 9pm?

I dont think it is hardware or MT related, but i see a similar thing at 8:30am at one 900mhz p2p link...but i just attribute that to either the sun or some kind of interfearence..

I've been wondering if this is an interference issue as the wireless links are otherwise rock solid. I'm actually quite impressed with the stability of these links especially for the low cost.

I didn't think about the fact that most cell providers around here do have free minutes starting at 9pm so there could be a relation there. I will continue monitoring it and post back.

yea i would look to interference...what i had to do on that 900mhz link i spoke about above, was keep tuning channels and bands until the 8:30am thing was negligible.

try that...
