Moving vehicle wireless

Thu Nov 15, 2018 7:28 pm

Hi,

I am sure this has been answered in some parts before but I hope to get complete thoughts in one place, please. I am looking to provide wireless access in moving vehicles with a large but confined space. The 4G coverage is not adequate ruling that out. So, I would like to mount static access points on the building being served but due to the size and shape of the building it is impossible to get full p-to-p coverage and line-of-sight from a single static AP.

My query, then, is what would be the best way of configuring the p-to-p between the static APs on the building and the moving vehicles such that the moving vehicle APs move seamlessly to the next (stronger) static AP as they are moving whilst keeping them on the same network on the output side? Would it be some kind of mesh? And would I have to force the moving AP to disconnect when it drops below a certain level or will it move by itself? Ideally I need to keep the drop in data to an absolute minimum while doing this.

Many thanks.

If I understood correctly the vehicles move indoors?

To me it sounds like basic 802.11 roaming is what you are asking for. No need for any P2P. Place wireless APs around the building and the wireless stations on the vehicles will roam from AP to the next automatically. Plain and simple.

Very true! What if (and I am not 100% if this will be the case yet) we need multiple VLANs and/or multiple SSIDs on a 'client' AP inside the vehicle hanging off the 'infrastructure' AP on the outside of the vehicle?

I have to stretch my imagination to grasp what on earth are you aiming at. Anyways, multiple SSIDs in the vehicle is not a problem. However, keeping the traffic separated up to infrastructure will need some creative thinking. Like creating a VPN tunnel for each SSID and bridging the SSID in the vehicle AP to the correct VPN. At the infrastructure side you'd bridge the VPN to the correct VLAN.
(No, I have never implemented anything remote like this. Just thinking aloud.)

As a second thought: I think you could pull this off with a single AP on the vehicle. Just use the 5GHz radio for the infrastructure and 2.4GHz for the internal WLAN or vice versa.
