Dude v6/v7 - Feature request list

Mon May 01, 2017 10:24 pm

In order to improve Dude v6 we will collect feature requests from this forum

If your desired feature is not yet implemented and you cannot find it in list below, you can create a separate feature request post with detailed description - and your feature request will be added to this post.

It will help to discuss each feature in its own topic in order to help developers to understand what should be done.

Also, please add:

Long overdue support for IPV6 addresses (there are feature requests on this forum going back to 2009)

Support for probing services over SSH tunnels so that we can check services on remote networks, not directly connected to the Dude server.

Thanks,
Jason

Hi,

I really would link to see a dude integration with the google maps API. I imagined a specific field where you would put the location Address and when you hover the mouse over this icon the pop-up window would show the location on google maps. Here is a quick mockup that i made for these feature.

Going to shamelessly link to a couple of my feature requests
Chart scaling
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=118624&p=584908#p584908
and Agent Behavior
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=117960&p=582415#p582415

I would also like to request better device linkages. Being able to move the location that the link connects to on the device, being able to give a smooth curve or rigid angle to a link, moving the device label on the link. Pretty much anything that can keep me from needing to do this.

Ability to control the icon color based a color variable that can be used in a function.

Nested Functions on interface device labels, this function doesn't work;
[if(Interface.OperStatus="up","","Interface Trouble")]

Allow custom field to be used as a variable in a function.

Prefer 64 bit counters.

Access the RRD variables in an advanced tab for the link.

Thanks,

Network Maps:
It would be handy to have a user-option that can rotate through the Network Maps on say a 10 second/predetermined cycle showing all the elements laid out.

For a visual output in a SysAdmin's office it could then bring to attention any devices down, especially where a Flash or Popup may lock to the Map a device has failed on.

In a few places we are looking at old refurbishing old WinXP Thin Clients (the type that erases an unsaved session on reset) to standalone Dude clients for this exact purpose. So far a static map of the main network is very handy but adding this would be one heck of a next step up!

Hello,
It would be awesome to add an automatic and manual export option of map as it was in the (very) old 4.0beta3 version.
The map could be sended by ftp, for instance...
I used to export this map and then create a planned task that send this page through FTP to a web site. I was then able to offer my users a simple view of our network...
Really essential :-)

I'd like to have import/export between winbox ( Addresses.CDB / addresses.WBX ) and Dude. We have multiple engineers installing devices. Every once in a while we merge the winbox addresses so we all know each customer box(es). For firmware updates dude will be more effective.
Also access to multiple dude server instances from within one client session.
Finally, move devices from one network-map to another

Re: Feature request list for Dude v6

Fri Sep 22, 2017 5:43 pm

Please, I will repeat my post from here:
viewtopic.php?t=108083#p541709

---------
Hello. Here we are used to use The Dude as we think its an awesome network monitoring tool.

One little thing is really annoying me, which is monitoring BGP Routers.
When we enable the RouterOS checkbox, all those routes (more then 1.2 million) would be read by The Dude.
If I enable SNMP, this also occur, which makes The Dude go crazy when a link become unavailable and all those routes need to disappear from the router.

So, would be possible to create a checkbox to not import routes from these types of routers?
This would be really effective as we could monitor all those services behind these routers but with only this exception.
I did read about many interfaces (used to appear in a PPPoE Server) also make this kind of behavior.

Maybe two checkbox, one about PPP interfaces and another about Routes.

Thanks!!!

What about a User permission feature! Not only READ OR WRITE!

I want to give read-only access to several user, but only for a few maps or pannels.

In addition to more granular user permissions, as requested by @ffrauter, could the users be authenticated using Active Directory, LDAP or RADIUS rather than just locally defined users in The Dude?

In the map view add device comments and some notification mark that shows that comments are added, what you can see when you move mouse over - like comments in MS excel for example!!
Sometimes it is nessessary to comment some configuration if you noticed some problems or give some comment about configuration...

Move cursor over device and you will see your Note.
This is configurable under: Settings --> Map --> Tooltip

please enable the dude to connect to routeros devices on other than the default port (eg. multiple devices on different winbox-ports or multiple devices behind one nat-gateway and portmapping active); connecting to those boxes via winbox is done using ip:port but the dude does not allow this, specifying ports for polling works, but that's no enough for the dude to get successfull routeros management active. Hi,
Sorry to write that, but we're still waiting for outlines coming back.
If you make a search for "dude outlines" you see that even if it seems to be a small problem, its a wish of many of us.
We still stucked at Dude 2.2 due to this regression. We use Dude for visualisating of our network and the human mind can undersand much easier outlined objects.
If you think (or try to remember 2.2) you'll see that maps were much easier to oversee.
Now its like many flying objects with no correct border.
Sure, it had a technical reason 8 (10?) years ago to remove, but now its time to renew outlines and shadows.
Please think it over again, and give us back borders!
Thx
Peter

Ps: If you're MT user and think same, you can add a vote.

Hello,
I would like to have a possibility to change device parameters from CLI/Terminal
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=133009
Fix the problem with searching inside submaps
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=116789
Fix the problem with permissions. Users that don't have write permissions, can not use split window
split.png
Fix: opening device setting comes too long (Dude server running on RB1100x4-DudeEdition).
Add a possibility to change the order of tools (right click -> "ping", "telnet" others)
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Yes please, other than default port
crucial for enterprise security
We are currently using WorkAround - change port to 8291, reconnect on dude (all inside remote probes come online) change port to non-default, but this is daily infinite JOB
please enable the dude to connect to routeros devices on other than the default port (eg. multiple devices on different winbox-ports or multiple devices behind one nat-gateway and portmapping active); connecting to those boxes via winbox is done using ip:port but the dude does not allow this, specifying ports for polling works, but that's no enough for the dude to get successfull routeros management active. Link line indicates which end the statistics for that link come from.
Something like a little bump or circle or perhaps an arrow at the end of the link line that shows you which end of the link the statistics are coming from.

Thanks!

Hi!

Please add:

* Option Bind Dude server to an IP address on router for all probes and outgoing traffic.

This will allow one server to probe and monitor a remote branch office over a VPN running from Head Office router without having to install the Dude on branch office router. Gets rid of having to hack via round the corner NAT to get into an IPSEC tunnel from the LAN. Router external IP address is typically in a completely different network range to the ones used in defined VPNs.

Thank you!

Option Bind Dude server to an IP address on router for all probes and outgoing traffic.
See, this will actually cause some issues, especially when someone has multiple sites/networks connected via different methods/devices. Specifying single IP for all traffic seems like limiting current functionality. (currently, Dude uses best IP per each device/probe based on
/ip route
setting in RouterOS)
In my experience, I didn't need a remote Dude server to monitor remote network. However in some cases, I ended up with using remote RouterBoard as agent (it actually does not require dude server installed) because it gives more precise results - for example pings/probes are not affected by latency and packet loss over VPN tunnel so the results are more relevant to the remote network itself.

I have been using the DUDE for several years, for all this time I realized that I personally lacked some very necessary things:

* Multiple connections between two devices, why is it limited to one? For example, how to monitor multiple physical etherchannel connections?
* Restricting account access to only certain maps, for example, I do not need an account to see all the cards, I need to give read access to only one specific network map
* Drag-n-drop devices with mouse from map to map

@Masyanich I have solved this by using "static" element(s) between two devices. That way I can do non-straight lines as well as multiple lines between two devices.

Would be nice to have the ability to setup a dude cluster, multiple dudes synced with each other for redundancy and self repair from other nodes if something breaks or a node was down. Then they could spread the load between each other while gathering statistics.

Api access to everything would be awesome. Poll values, etc.

Be nice to be able to monitor the rx/tx signal & ccq of all wireless clients by api to track it for problems before customers call.

Hi,

I can't reduce the width of the device window, just I can make it bigger. And when you make it bigger you can't go back :(

I'm running the Dude on a AIR-RAD2400 and I use the client with Windows 10.

In Services - show ''network % downtime''
Simple calculation using total outages time / total up-time

Alternatively - allow export csv of Outages - from SERVICES

Thanks

please enable the dude to connect to routeros devices on other than the default port (eg. multiple devices on different winbox-ports or multiple devices behind one nat-gateway and portmapping active); connecting to those boxes via winbox is done using ip:port but the dude does not allow this, specifying ports for polling works, but that's no enough for the dude to get successfull routeros management active. (please correct me if I'm wrong :))
I agree with that. If we change the default winbox port, in The Dude, we lost the info in Devices >> RouterOS tab. Will be nice to custom port and maintain management.

Hi, can be precious a system for triggering scripts on server for user map events. An option in map settings with a multiple choises for example action: (you select voices "Adding device" -> on-event-script: (and a box for script) in this way you open a world, i can add a device manually in the map and for example send an autoprovisioning file to newely added devce.

Or i remove a device? A script can be useful for clearing routes to deleted device or remove ppp profile of deleted device in server.

Would like to see a simple feature to DISABLE "ALL" the Notifications , Or Suspend the POLLING on all monitors? Or a way to Cancel all the notifications in the queue ?
Would like to do this without having to shutdown the server all together.

Some way to stop the dude server from overloading

When the uplink to the DUDE server requires maintenance or some similar 2-300 monitors all go off and after it starts you can't stop it. Just have to wait for them all to
Go down... then wait for them all to come back up.
Also causes alot of false outages in the graphs.

Maybe I should have cleaned my glasses, but I cannot find "Full CLI access to /dude in RouterOS" on the list?
This has been addressed on the forum before, and I am surprised that it is not yet implemented, as everything is in Winbox already....
I am planning to configure the Dude as a more fine-grained tool for monitoring and logging, and then it would be very convenient to be able to use scripting to access the data.
I would like to use it both ways, both for doing wholesale update of parameters/values for the hundreds of devices currently in the Dude, but also for reading values for statistical and logging purposes.

So Mikrotik, as it is all there behind the curtains already, when will we get full CLI read/write access?

Lock individual static ( or not only static) items on map.

This allow add image with stage plan on map instead using background.

Option can be accesable from context menu->Lock.
Locked items not selected by mouse and keep own location.

Map virtual scale space

Zoom and unzoom on map must use virtual canvas with free space accesable from all sides.
Now unzoom going to left up corner and lost mouse position where zooming/unzoomming start.

This allow more intuitive use map like image editor canvas and don't lost interes area if map was unzoomed by error.

Usage this feature keep current command mouse scrool wheel.

Changes to map virtual space moving and zooming

Map must moving by common mouse moving with keyboard modificators.
Modificators can be selected in settings and depends on platform or user preferences

By example in Windows such keys are keyboard CTRL, SHIFT buttons and two mouse buttons and WHEEL
Wheel up scroll map up
Wheel down scroll map down

Wheel up + key modifier (SHIFT or other in settings) scroll map left
Wheel down + key modifier (SHIFT or other in settings) scroll map right

Wheel up + key modifier (CTRL or other in settings) zoom map
Wheel down + key modifier (CTRL or other in settings) unzoom map

Moving mouse with pressed LEFT button make area select
Moving with pressed RIGHT button pan map

Such or similar settings allow fast and intuitive browse large map

Now map has only one special mode toggle button which switch mouse move with pressed LEFT button to map pan.

Пожалуйста добавьте данный функционал!
Сейчас мир на стадии формирования IOT технологий...
у нас применяются устройства для мониторинга напряжения и потребления энергии, а так же зарядки с солнечных панелей... вот с графиками удобнее было бы в The Dude...
ну или к примеру the dude мог бы перезагрузить устройство через смарт розетку...

----Google Translate----

Please add this functionality!
Now the world is at the stage of formation of IOT technologies ...
we use devices for monitoring voltage and energy consumption, as well as charging from solar panels ... it would be more convenient with The graphs in The Dude ...
well, or for example, the dude could reboot the device through a smart outlet ...

Add custom fields to device csv export.

I'd really like to use the custom fields for storing device information that I need to export for reporting purposes. Unfortunately I can't do this. The csv export only includes the fields that show by default.

- automatically download of new ROS version and storing in the dude server maybe manually triggered (to save unnecessary bandwith and versions on the server)

Make it sense?
I think that nothing was implemented from the mentioned suggestions in the v6 and hope it will be done in v7.

And now we have v6 and v7 is in progress, so we need for some period of time to maintain information for both versions. And in such a case it will be like to maintain two similar copies.

I think it makes a lot of sense to make a new Feature request list for v7. This thread is too huuuuuge, I think nobody not even Mikrotik support remembers everything written here. Also this thread is from 2013. Many early posts are by now probably moot or otherwise invalid. Also most posters probably don't even remmber what they wrote.

Secondly a new thread would restart the conversation about Dude feature requests. This old thread is dead, dead I say. And we can put a link in the new thread that will point towards the old thread, just so that this thread is not completely lost.

Anyways here is my feature request for Dude V7:
-Geographical backgrounds for maps. Ideal would be to have openstreetmap integration. Alternatively it could have google maps integration but I think that by now Openstreetmap has parity with Google maps and you avoid the whole shebang with api tokens etc....

Here is an official statement about the current development of the Dude.

Normis - 10.02.2022:

"We have not done work on the Dude for some time now. If it works for you, great, you can use it. But there is no active development on the Dude at the moment. It may resume in the future, it's not known."
I gotta say that this is highly disappointing.
While I do understand resource constraints very, very well; this does leave Mikrotik/RouterOS in a bad spot.

IMO, it's hard to call Mikrotik a viable solution for service providers, or even SMB/SOHO without a solid management solution. The Dude currently would best be described as a "OEM-provided monitoring solution with some remote management features".
Realistically, I consider Mikrotik's best relevant competitor to be Ubiquiti. Ubiquiti continues to pour money into it's OEM management and monitoring solutions; while those management tools don't give you the power of CLI-equivalent capability, they are auto-magic for 80%+ of the relevant market.
Yes, Ubiqiti does cost more than Mikrotik, but honestly the C2 capabilities using the OEM-provided tools easily compensate for that additional cost. Further, Mikrotik doesn't have an answer at all to true modern security gateway features with integrated IDS/IPS and DPI features, and then some. The amount of time and effort saved there alone is insane compared to a purely Mikrotik-shop.

And this leaves out how far behind Mikrotik has fallen in the WISP and, more generally, WiFi verticals.

I <3 Mikrotik so much, the fundamental capability for the cost is a hell of a deal; it's fair to say that I am both an evangelist and fanboy. However it's getting increasingly difficult to be so in comparison with how far Ubiquiti has come in a similar time.

I don't know what's needed to "get right" / play catch up, but I know that something needs to happen.
Since it's understood that Mikrotik needs to keep it's hardware and RouterOS cost model the way it is; this is what drew the customer and fan-base to begin with. However, as a thought, I'd happily start paying a licensing and/or maintenance fee for fully-capable management and monitoring software capabilities. This doesn't get into answering a UDM Pro with a "more than IPtables" firewall solution from Mikrotik, but something needs to happen.

Ubiquiti sells their top-o-the-line UDM-Pro, with all of the management/monitoring capability for their entire fleet of devices built-in, /and/ modern IDS/IPS-with-visualization functionality rated to handle 3.5Gbps of throughput (with IDS/IPS on and configured), for 375 USD directly from their web store. $375 for a fantastic single-box edge device end central ecosystem controller/management solution for firewall, routing, switching, VPN, and wireless (among other things like security cameras).
While I would say, "just put Ubiqiti at the edge and put MIkrotik everywhere behind it", walking away from that single-pane-of-glass management has costs in labor/people that likely greatly offsets the additional investment in Ubi hardware.

I so very, very much want Mikrotik and the RouterOS ecosystem to flourish... but again, something needs to change somehow....

- Button to duplicate item in context menu on the map.
- Network Map export/import buttons.
- Zoom buttons in the menu bar (great for accessibility).
- Possibility to Delete all the Tools.
- Safe mode button.
- Possibility of creating network map templates (import and export them).
- Possibility of framing the elements of the grid (horizontal / vertical).
- Backup of network maps / items / positions via cli (/dude/ export file="").

Please finish command line support, many items are missing, once completed you would open up a wide range of possibilities with scripts. We may automatically add discoveries to our networks and create maps fully automatically.

Would like to make a request regarding Dude Probes of SNMP.

Have a Function that reports Temperature of a Switch.
When switch exceeds certain Temperature then reports as outage. After this, graphing is no longer undertaken - even though temperature is still reported.

To fix this there is 2 Options :
1 - add additional probe without "error" to graph the Temperature, adding overhead to the SNMP having 2 probes for the same function.
2 - request additional "Value" field for when "down" - that I can place the same return function (or different if required) in to keep the graph running while in "error".

If i could get an update as to if this will go through or not - so I can consider the options - would be great.

What does it take to write %currentversion% instead of... %currentversion% and recompile?

Sorry, I mean that the version is always inserted as the same number of the main version, but the code is untouched, is just the version number that change.....

Hello,
please help, is there a way to change all polling probe intervals to default with scripts or bulk mode so that all network maps become the default polling interval prob,

Thank You

Re: Feature request list for Dude v6

Going to shamelessly link to a couple of my feature requests
Chart scaling

and Agent Behavior
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=117960&p=582415#p582415

I would also like to request better device linkages. Being able to move the location that the link connects to on the device, being able to give a smooth curve or rigid angle to a link, moving the device label on the link. Pretty much anything that can keep me from needing to do this.

To represent multiple networks going to and from the same devices. E.G. A storage network and a data network for server clusters running off the same switch.
In what tool did you draw this map?
