CCR & MetaRouter

Fri Mar 15, 2013 4:28 pm

Hi,
Is it possible to create a meta router using v6rc11 on a CCR1016?
if not, will it be available in the future?

Regards

How about MetaRouter on the CCR with Docker containers?

Then I can run all my Telecoms switches in Docker containers on on 72 core CCR's

Good bye x64 Servers !

yup. when MikroTik finish moving ROS to ZOL from mainstream/vanialla linux kernels - scalability and response of ROS will skyrocketing, for sure.

currently you can purchase TILE based servers from Tilera. If you go to their website they list a lot of options from PCIe cards to full servers with PCIe slots for IO cards. Currently their offering actually beats mikrotik in features as they come with the full compliment of features that the TILE CPUs themselves support such as PCIe x16 slot, SATA, etc.

They even have a 288 core TILE server consisting of 8 gx36 TILEs and with many 10Gb/s ports. You can than run any OS on them that can be compiled for their CPU.

Its what i really wanted to see from mikrotik. Routerboards with the full compliment of features that the CPUs support for additional expansions and such that would make their devices much more useful.

With metarouter you have to use an image that is compiled for the CPU as well.

Did you get a quote from Tilera?
One off's start at $13k USD for a 36 core pci card and went up to $19k USD for the 72 core.
You also need a one off dev license of $12k USD.

For you to build your own system as a one off, you're better sticking with off the shelf x86 I think.

+1, I would like to load Snort in a metarouter to give IDS capability on the CCR.
Obviously not expecting that to work at line-rate, but hoping to achieve a couple hundred mbit/sec.

Sorry, mistake.
I have two CCR1016-12 and one CRS125-24.
Tested metaRouter on CRS125-24, CPU usage keep 100% and WAN speed can not full speed when metaRouter is running.

It is more than 2 and a half year since that statement, with nothing new.

I dont get why MT removed it, even if it isnt multicore it could be made so that every instance of metarouter will use a seperate core and let the user compile or use an OS that matches the CPU architecture rather than trying to virtualise the instruction sets.

I know i meant including on the other RBs. multicore RBs never had it so i was suggesting to just let us have metarouter on multicore RBs even if each instance is restricted to 1 core and if the OS to be installed would need to be compiled for the particular CPU architecture. This would give the CCR an edge as you can upgrade the ram of the CCR1036 and the CCR1072 comes with 16GB of ram, plenty of ram and cores with a suitable architecture for running many virtual routers with its mesh.

it depends on the CPU architecture, not the number of CPUs per device, as I can see...

Since we're already in 2019, I assume this feature will be available only with RouterOS 7. 8) .. but nobody can tell when RouterOS 7 will be available ..

It will probably never happen...

I have proposed that instead of MetaRouter a new, lighter feature to run user code on MikroTik routes should be added.
Something that does not require virtualization but just is a user process that is connected to the network only via predefined sockets and only has access to a single directory for config.
It would not be as powerful as MetaRouter but it would be useful for many things.

MetaRouter has been replaced by Docker Containers in version 7. It is available in v7.1rc4.
