I've been working with mikrotiks for a couple of years now, and I'm most used to CCR`s. Recently one of my clients asked me to put a new PPPoE concentrator on his network, given that the other ones are starting to suffer from the high processing demand. He has a PowerEdge server, that I think it's going to be good enough for the job. The thing is that he wants to install it on bare metal, as the biggest concern is to loose performance if we try to virtualize it on our Proxmox cluster.

I'm looking for information all over the internet, but with no success. I'm using an USB flash disk to burn the .img file on it and trying to install it on the server, but I get an error before the installation starts, FATAL ERROR - NO CD-ROM.

Is there any bypass to this or any other way to install it on a server and not loose any performance?

For bare metal you need an x86 .iso file. The img file is for a virtualized environment as CHR install.

I tried the ISO, I used Unetbootin and Rufus to make a bootable USB stick but when I try to start the installation I get a CD-ROM error.

Ok, new error now. I managed to make the .img file bootable using dd command. I get a message that says "Initializing" and then another one saying "Starting with initdr". And then the server shuts down.

Is there .img for x86? I don't see it on download page, only CHR, and I don't think it will run on bare metal. But you can install x86 from CD somewhere where it will work (even virtual machine), create disk image from that, write it to real disk and it might work.

I suggest running CHR even on real hardware, it will be very fast and possibly even better than the ISO.
You can run it on some other lightweight OS with KVM or HyperV or ESXi

Tank you so much @normis, the biggest concern is the possible performance issues, but coming from someone from the inside makes it easier for me to argument with the executives about the best solution.
