How to activate internet and wifi? [no network knowledge, home user]

Sat Aug 17, 2019 5:29 pm

I have a router [R] from the cable provider. I have Microtik wireless access point [M]. Port 4 from router is connected with cable to port 1 on M. I first tried to configure M with the quick settings and set to bridge mode but it just doesn't work and I'm exhausted after several hours of testing.

I installed Winbox and I can login if connected to Mikrotik Wifi. I deleted all the bridges/vlans/ip-addresses/firewall rules because I think the quick configuration messed it up. I added a DCHP client on ether1 and I see that ether1 gets and IP in winbox. Ping to the gateway is good using winbox. But from the PC I don't have internet and can't reach the routers gateway. :(

I also tried creating a bridge and added all the ether and wifi interfaces to it. But then I couldn't create a DHCP client for the bridge.

Can someone please write what I need to do? I have no knowledge in networking. I think that this kind of stuff should work out of the box.

Hi, you didn't tell what MikroTik box you have. Difficult to help you with this really basic stuff. If you want to set a DHCP client on the bridge, don't forget to remove it first from the ethernet interface.

Maybe you can use this (might need some web-page translation) : http://www.spanheim.nl/index.php?item=m ... ridge-mode

It's not my page, and there are some strange things on the screen captures, like the mode should stay on "ap bridge" all the time.

Hi, try to connect via Winbox but over ethernet.
If you mess up the wifi configuration you'll be unable to reconnect (been there, lol).
Also (best) you can try to access using MAC address instead IP.

On Winbox you have System -> Reset Configuration that should clear invalid configs.
Next time it boots and connect with winbox, should asks you for a basic config.
If you go to Quick Set, you can use the options (there's a Home AP configuration), should be really straight.

EDIT: Check which IP segment the router is working, in example 192.168.0.0/24; so in your mikrotik you should use a different network.
