Wifi for a campsite opinion

Thu Nov 07, 2019 11:24 pm

Hello,

Thanks for reading this post and helping me.

I own a campsite and need to cover it with wifi. What is the best option?

I intent to use the following material:
1 x mikrotik RB4011 (RB4011iGS+RM)
3 xmikrotik Metal 52 ac (RBMetalG-52SHPacn)
2 x mikrotik cAP ac (RBcAPGi-5acD2nD)

Primary usage of the equipment is to have 2 vlans on the network. Vlan 1 is for office usage and with 25% bandwidth the vlan2 is for tourists with 75% of the bandwidth. Booth vlans will be over Wi-Fi on different ssids. Aditionaly the vlan of the turists is on a hotspot controlled network with radius server (radius running ideally in router if possible). Eventually an external vpn server may be used with 1 or 2 clients connected.

This is the map, of the campsite to cover with wifi (not 100% but as much as possible) the points 1 are outdoor aps that will be mounted on light poles, the points 2 are indoor access points, for the cafe and the home. At the moment i have one rb metal 51 ap and has a good coverage at 2.4Ghz, in the map is the one closer to the river).

Am i making a good guess for the hardware?

Thanks in advance ;)

Metal 52 ac is only 1x1 and does not support 2,4 and 5 GHz simultaneously.

i think you better go with wap ac's for access points, based on number of user that should connect you chose the quantity and the location.
RB4011 is fine as main router and you can set as capsman, hotspot users can be managed through usermanager

What is your alternative?

Thanks in advance.

For example the RBwAPG-5HacT2HnD-BE?

For outdoor use I am afraid that plastic might not be the best solution. It will be mounted on electric light pole. No cover what so ever.

Will it be a problem?

Thanks in advance.

yes it's weatherproof so you can mount it outside, the only thing i would suggest the white version, you should avoid black colors for outside devices, you want them to absorb less heat possible form the sun (unless you live somewhere near the pole)

Where is the RB4011 located?
What are the size of the buildings the access points will be located in?
Are they one rooms or split into several rooms??

Thanks,

Rhe RB4011 is located in one of the 2 places in the map.

The area to cover from the ap in the building is 10/15 meters radius.
There is a small room but not a problem if no wifi.

Hello,
you configure capsman on rb4011. If all configuration is well, you shouldn't have problems.
