Console not usable via winbox

Thu Jan 09, 2020 10:57 pm

Working with
Model RouterBOARD 952Ui-5ac2nD
Revision
Serial Number 71AF097ECE01
Firmware Type qca9531L
Factory Firmware 6.42.1
Current Firmware 6.46.1
Upgrade Firmware 6.46.1

Selecting Winbox/Console opens a window with no prompt. Clicked on "+" which opened a new window with two fields: Port, which won't accept input; and Term, which has no pull down menu (it will accept 'ascii'). But nothing happens when clicking on OK--only Cancel. Other parts of the configuration can be changed in winbox. Am I missing something in winbox? If winbox is connected, should Console be available? There is another workstation logged in, but routerboards allow multiple users at once (only one can control Safe Mode).

Can't get in from the Internet via SSH because I have set up dstNAT to reach an internal server with SSH on port 22. Have not looked yet, but I suspect that the routerboard can listen for SSH on another port. True?

All suggestions welcomed.

/system console must do something, but I’ve never figured out any use for it. I believe it controls the “console port,” which very few Routerboards seem to come with anymore.

Are you sure you’re not really looking for the interface provided by “New Terminal”?

The MikroTik document wiki at https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:TOC mentions "Console" in two places but the word "Terminal" is absent. I'm not allowed to edit, so what would be the right way to get this page updated?

That Wiki page describes the CLI primitives. Although most functions in Winbox are mapped 1-1 onto CLI primitives, New Terminal is not one of them. New Terminal sets up a telnet connection to the device opened under Winbox and displays its traffic in the new window. This is apparent when you look at the log entry produced when you click on New Terminal (provided you have /system logging configured to log it). It says: "user <whatever> logged in from <ip address> via telnet." So the CLI TOC page is correct as it stands.

It would be wonderful if your previous message were available on the wiki. As you say, the TOC is correct, but to me it is not entirely complete.

You can write to support@mikrotik.com and suggest it, but I think chances are slim. It’s not the job of that page to document Winbox, it is documented elsewhere.
