Powerbox to Powerbox, daisy chain

Mon Mar 16, 2020 3:22 pm

Hi All,

We need to increase the amount of ports on one of our towers. We currently have a powerbox being powered by POE on a 20m cable run, then 2 LHG5 and 2 Mantbox5 sectors running off it. This is running 100% fine, no issues. The problem is the building owners recently done some renovations and the builders closed up our conduits where our existing cable is. This has now prevented us from running another cable for an additional Powerbox.

My question is, can we run a 2nd powerbox off the existing powerbox? Essentially move the 2 sectors to the new powerbox and power it from the original Powerbox? I know this is not ideal, but running an additional cable is a last resort at this point as it is a hotel & they don't want cables and piping on the outside of the building.

This is theoretically possible, except that you cannot exceed the output power budget on the single port on PowerBox 1 that runs PowerBox 2 and its attached devices. Unless you are running some very low power devices on PB2, you will have a hard time.

You may do better installing a POE splitoff adapter at the top of the tower and wiring the DC directly to the barrel plugs on each unit. Then you only need to make sure you don't exceed the power output budget of your power injector, which you can upgrade if necessary.
